Resistance of seagrass habitats to ocean acidification via altered interactions in a tri-trophic chain

Despite the wide knowledge about prevalent effects of ocean acidification on single species, the consequences on species interactions that may promote or prevent habitat shifts are still poorly understood. Using natural CO2 vents, we investigated changes in a key tri-trophic chain embedded within all its natural complexity in seagrass systems. We found that seagrass habitats remain stable at vents despite the changes in their tri-trophic components. Under high pCO2, the feeding of a key herbivore (sea urchin) on a less palatable seagrass and its associated epiphytes decreased, whereas the feeding on higher-palatable green algae increased. The plasma membrane oxidase NtrbohD is responsible for AOS production in elicited tobacco cells

Summary A cDNA encoding a protein, NtrbohD, located on the plasma membrane and homologue to the flavocytochrome of the neutrophil NADPH oxidase, was cloned in tobacco. The corresponding mRNA was accumulated when tobacco leaves and cells were treated with the fungal elicitor cryptogein. After elicitation with cryptogein, tobacco cells transformed with antisense constructs of NtrbohD showed the same extracellular alkalinization as the control, but no longer produced active oxygen species (AOS). This work represents the first demonstration of the function of a homologue of gp91–phox in AOS production in elicited tobacco cells.

Cytosolic calcium rises and related events in ergosterol-treated Nicotiana cells

International audience; The typical fungal membrane component ergosterol was previously shown to trigger defence responses and protect plants against pathogens. Most of the elicitors mobilize the second messenger calcium, to trigger plant defences. We checked the involvement of calcium in response to ergosterol using Nicotiana plumbaginifolia and Nicotiana tabacum cv Xanthi cells expressing apoaequorin in the cytosol. Active vanadate-sensitive H+ translocation in corn roots membrane vesicles and proteoliposomes

Abstract A member fraction from corn roots which contains a vanadate-sensitive ATPase activity has been prepared. The specific activity at 38°C is between 3 and mol 12 μmol · min −1 · mg −1 , depending on the age of roots. Addition of ATP promotes a very rapid quenching of the fluorescence of 9-amino-6-chloro-3-methoxy-acridin (ACMA). Proton pumping exhibits a delayed sensitivity to vanadate but is strongly and instantaneously inhibited by the new inhibitor SW 26. Thiabendazole (TBZ) is a persistent fungicide used in the post-harvest treatment of fruits. Its application results in the production of contaminated effluents which should be treated before their environmental discharge. In the absence of efficient treatment methods in place, biological systems based on microbial inocula with specialized degrading capacities against TBZ could be a feasible treatment approach. Nutritional quality of littoral macroinvertebrates and pelagic zooplankton in subarctic lakes

Littoral benthic primary production is considered the most important energy source of consumers in subarctic lakes. We analyzed essential fatty acid (EFA) and amino acid (EAA) content of 23 littoral benthic macroinvertebrate taxa as well as cladocerans and copepods from pelagic and littoral habitats of 8–9 subarctic lakes to compare their nutritional quality. Pelagic crustacean zooplankton had significantly higher EFA and total FA content (on average 2.6‐fold and 1.6‐fold, respectively) than littoral macroinvertebrates in all our study lakes. The application of electroanalytical methods to determine affinity series of metal cations for functional biosorbent groups

Abstract The affinity of the selected heavy metal cations: Mn 2 + , Ni 2 + , Cu 2 + , Zn 2 + , Cd 2 + , Pb 2 + and Na + , K + , Mg 2 + , Ca 2 + was determined for the functional groups located on the surface of leached barley middlings, so called Brewer's spent grain (BSG) – a by-product of the brewing industry. A simple method for determining the affinity series, with the use of a conductivity meter and a pH-meter, was described.
