Lower incisor position in different malocclusions and facial patterns

2012

Introduction: The position of lower incisor has been of considerable concern when planning an orthodontic treatment, having been recognized as one of diagnostic keys, Very important in the development of malocclusion and facial pattern. Objectives: In this study we claim to determine the importance of the position and inclination of lower incisor in the different malocclusions and facial patterns, and to base which of the cephalometric measurement parameters are the mostreliable. Material and Methods: Ninety lateral radiographies were taken, and they were classified by skeletal malocclusion and facial pattern. These teleradiographies have been performed cephalometric analysis, which includel…

The bite force and craniofacial morphology in patients with acromegaly: A pilot study

2013

Objectives: Acromegaly is a metabolic disorder caused by increased growth hormone secretion. As a consequence of acromegaly some typical craniofacial morphology changes appear. This pilot study was conducted to compare the bite force and the characteristic size and shape of the craniofacial components of acromegalic patients with the healthy Turkish individuals. In additon, the correlations between bite force and craniofacial morphology of patients with acromegaly and control individuals were evaluated. Study Design: The maximum bite force of the participants was recorded with strain-gage transducer. Lateral xray scans were made under standard conditions, in centric occlusion. On cephalogra…

Nasal airway, lip competence, and craniofacial morphology

1993

The aim of the present investigation was to demonstrate whether children selected by their open lip posture show differences in their nasal airway resistance and facial morphology compared to children with closed lip closure. Thirty-two children with poor lip competence were compared to a control group of 20 with secure mouth closure. Patients with poor lip competence showed a significantly higher ML-NSL angle and also ML-NL angle. Anterior rhinomanometry, as well as measurements of the pharyngeal space on lateral headfilms, displayed no significant differences between the two groups. The same material was also grouped cephalometrically into skeletal open and skeletal deep bite configuratio…

Spring-Assisted Correction of Hypotelorism in Metopic Synostosis

2007

Metopic synostosis, apart from the pointed forehead, typically is characterized by hypotelorism with egg-shaped orbits on cephalography and the frontoorbital axis parallel or even converging superiorly. The frontoorbital axis angle is a novel parameter for analyzing and describing the orientation of the orbits. Current methods of surgery often result in undercorrection of the almost ever-present hypotelorism. The present study was performed to analyze a new technique, capable in this respect, using steel wire springs in conjunction with a cranioplasty.A retrospective study of 23 metopic synostosis patients operated on between 1999 and 2004 was conducted. A strip midline craniectomy and fron…

Surrounding Greenness and Pregnancy Outcomes in Four Spanish Birth Cohorts

2012

Background: Green spaces have been associated with improved physical and mental health; however, the available evidence on the impact of green spaces on pregnancy is scarce. Objectives: We investigated the association between surrounding greenness and birth weight, head circumference, and gestational age at delivery. Methods: This study was based on 2, 393 singleton live births from four Spanish birth cohorts (Asturias, Gipuzkoa, Sabadell, and Valencia) located in two regions of the Iberian Peninsula with distinct climates and vegetation patterns (2003–2008). We defined surrounding greenness as average of satellite-based Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) (Landsat 4–5 TM data at …

Skeletal features in patient affected by maxillary canine impaction

2013

Objective: To analyze the skeletal features of patients with maxillary canine impaction. Material and Methods: The complete pre-treatment records of 1674 orthodontic patients were examined. From the subjects with maxillary impacted canine 12 patients were excluded , remaining 108. The subjects with maxillary impacted canine were divided into two study groups: a palatally displaced canine group (PDCG) (77 patients) and a buccally displaced canine group (BDCG) (31 patients). The values of the skeletal features measured on the lateral cephalometric radiograph were compared with a control group (CG) of 121 subjects randomly selected from the initial sample without maxillary canine impaction. Th…

Male Facial Anthropometry and Attractiveness

2013

The symmetry and masculinity of the face are often considered important elements of male facial attractiveness. However, facial preferences are rarely studied on natural faces. We studied the effect of these traits and facial metric parameters on facial attractiveness in Spanish and Colombian raters. In total, 13 metric and 11 asymmetry parameters from natural, unmanipulated frontal face photographs of 50 Spanish men were measured with the USIA semiautomatic anthropometric software. All raters (women and men) were asked to rank these images as potential long-term partners for females. In both sexes, facial attractiveness was negatively associated with facial masculinity, and preference was …

Effects on the maxilla and cranial base caused by cervical headgear : a longitudinal study

2011

Objectives: The aim of this study is to test the possible orthopedic effects of cervical headgear on the cranial base and maxilla. Study design: a sample consisting of 79 subjects with skeletal class II malocclusion was divided into two groups. The experimental group was made up of 41 patients all treated with cervical headgear. The control group included a total of 38 non-treated patients. Each one of these groups was then subdivided according to age into one of three groups: prepubescent, pubescent or post-pubescent. Cephalometric parameters were compared in both groups in order to measure the cranial base angle and the vertical and sagittal position of the maxilla. Additionally, cephalom…

Association between third molar agenesis and craniofacial structure development

2015

Introduction The aim of this investigation was to study the relationship between third molar agenesis—including the number of ageneses—and craniofacial structure growth. Methods We reviewed 305 clinical histories of patients treated at the Orthodontics Unit of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Valencia in Spain. This included radiographic records of optimal quality. Of these, 40 patients who had agenesis of at least 1 third molar were included in the study group. A control group was formed with another 40 patients with all 4 third molars present. For both groups, a further criterion for inclusion was cone-beam computed tomography records. The cephalometric analysis …

Surgical planning after sleep versus awake techniques in patients with obstructive sleep apnea

2013

Objective/Hypothesis This study examined correlations between surgical recommendations based on either drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) or common awake examination methods in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Study Design Prospective, blinded, clinical trial at a university hospital. Methods An otorhinolaryngologist designed surgical plans for patients with OSAS after clinical examination, lateral cephalometry, the Muller maneuver, and Friedman staging. A second otorhinolaryngologist blinded to the previous plans made surgical recommendations after DISE. A third person tested agreement between the two sets of plans using Cohen's kappa statistic and the chi-squared te…
