Electrically-evoked release of [3H]acetylcholine from autonomic neurons (myenteric plexus), motoneurons (phrenic nerve) and the central nervous system (neocortex) was investigated in the presence and absence of the calcium channel antagonists omega-conotoxin GVIA, nifedipine and verapamil, whereby the same species (rat) was used in all experiments. 6-Hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) is a neurotoxic compound commonly used to induce dopamine (DA) depletion in the nigrostriatal system, mimicking Parkinson's disease (PD) in animals. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the 7-day effect of unilateral nigral lesion on rat brain monoamine neurochemistry. Five brain regions were examined: the brain stem, cerebellum, hippocampus, striatum, and cortex. 6-OHDA-unilateral lesion dramatically modified DA, serotonin (5-HT) and their metabolites contents in both sides of the different brain nuclei. Capillary flow and diameter changes during reperfusion after global cerebral ischemia studied by intravital video microscopy.

The reaction of cerebral capillaries to ischemia is unclear. Based on Hossmann's observation of postischemic “delayed hypoperfusion,” we hypothesized that capillary flow is decreased during reperfusion because of increased precapillary flow resistance. To test this hypothesis, we measured cerebral capillary erythrocyte velocity and diameter changes by intravital microscopy in gerbils. A 6-year-old girl had progressive ataxia, and visual disturbances resulting in blindness. She died in her sleep at age 22 years. She shared with her sister and paternal relatives bilateral pes cavus deformities and impaired deep-tendon reflexes which suggested Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. A cortical venous infarction model has been evaluated as to the degree of regional flow reduction and by studying effects of cortical spreading depression (CSD). Two adjacent cortical veins were occluded photochemically with rose bengal and fiberoptic illumination. Postischemic application of lipid peroxidation inhibitor U-101033E reduces neuronal damage after global cerebral ischemia in rats.

Background and Purpose —The lipid peroxidation inhibitor U-101033E was examined for effects on cerebral blood flow (CBF), cortical tissue hemoglobin oxygen saturation (HbS o 2 ), and neuronal damage. Methods —Fifteen minutes of global cerebral ischemia was induced by two-vessel occlusion and hypobaric hypotension. Wistar rats (n=25) were randomized to receive vehicle (n=9) or 40 mg/kg U-101033E (n=9) intraperitoneally during 2 hours of reperfusion. A sham group (n=7) had neither ischemia nor therapy.
