The Vibrio choleare haemolysin anion channel is required for cell vacuolation and death

SummarySeveral strains of Vibrio cholerae secrete ahaemolytic toxin of 63kDa, termed V. cholerae cytolysin (VCC). This toxin causes extensive vacuo-lation and death of cells in culture and forms ananion-selective channel in planar lipid bilayers and incells. Here, we identify inhibitors of the VCC anionchannel and show that the formation of the anionchannel is necessary for the development of the vacuoles and for the cell death induced by this toxin. Are epizoites biological indicators of a western Mediterranean striped dolphin die-off?

During a die-off of Mediterranean striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba in 1990-91, 82 individuals stranded on the Spanish coast were examined for crustacean ectoparasites and epizoites. Six species were detected: Syncyarnus aequus, PenneUa sp., Xenobalanus globicipitis, Conchoderma virgatum, Lepas pectinata and Lepas cf. hillii. The barnacles L. pectinata and L. cf. hillii are reported here for the first time on cetaceans; they were attached to the teeth. C. virgaturn was also found on the teeth; this is an unusual attachment on cetaceans. Je 12 Patienten mit laparoskopisch und histologisch gesicherter chronischer Hepatitis und Lebercirrhose erhielten peroral 800 bzw. 1200 mg Acetanilid. Als Kontrolle dienten altersmasig entsprechende Lebergesunde. 2, 6 und 24 Std nach der Belastung wurden das freie und das an Glucuronsaure gebundene N-acetyl-p-aminophenol im Serum und im 24 Std-Urin bestimmt. Auserdem wurde versucht, freies, unverandertes Acetanilid nachzuweisen. Im Urin wurde ferner die Konzentration des total konjugierten N-acetyl-p-aminphenols gemessen. Current mechanistic anaerobic digestion (AD) models cannot accurately represent the underlying processes occurring during food waste (FW) AD. This work presents an update of the Anaerobic Digestion Model no. 1 (ADM1) to provide accurate estimations of free ammonia concentrations and related inhibition thresholds, and model syntrophic acetate oxidation as acetate-consuming pathway. A modified Davies equation predicted NH3 concentrations and pH more accurately, and better estimated associated inhibitory limits. Abstract Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive, highly metastatic malignancy and accounts for 85% of pancreatic cancers. PDAC patients have poor prognosis with a five-year survival of only 5–10% after diagnosis and treatment. Pancreatic cancer has been associated with type II diabetes as the frequency of recently diagnosed diabetics that develop pancreatic cancer within a 10-year period of initial diagnosis of diabetes in increased in comparison to non-diabetic patients.
