β-delayed neutron emission measurements around the third r-process abundance peak
2013
This contribution summarizes an experiment performed at GSI (Germany) in the neutron-rich region beyond N=126. The aim of this measurement is to provide the nuclear physics input of relevance for r-process model calculations, aiming at a better understanding of the third r-process abundance peak. Many exotic nuclei were measured around 211Hg and 215Tl. Final ion identification diagrams are given in this contribution. For most of them, we expect to derive halflives and and β-delayed neutron emission probabilities. The detectors used in this experiment were the Silicon IMplantation and Beta Absorber (SIMBA) detector, based on an array of highly segmented silicon detectors, and the BEta deLayE…
Odd haemoglobins in odd-toed ungulates: Impact of selected haemoglobin characteristics of the white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) on the monitorin…
2019
Background Due to the current poaching crisis in Africa, increasing numbers of white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum) require opioid immobilisation for medical interventions or management procedures. Alarmingly, the results of both blood gas analysis and pulse oximetry regularly indicate severe hypoxaemia. Yet, the recovery of the animals is uneventful. Thus, neither of the techniques seems to represent the real oxygenation level. We hypothesized that unusual haemoglobin characteristics of this species interfere with the techniques developed and calibrated for the use in human patients. Methods Haemoglobin was isolated from blood samples of four adult, white rhinoceroses. Oxygen dissociat…

Navigation accuracy after automatic- and hybrid-surface registration in sinus and skull base surgery.
2016
Objective Computer-aided-surgery in ENT surgery is mainly used for sinus surgery but navigation accuracy still reaches its limits for skull base procedures. Knowledge of navigation accuracy in distinct anatomical regions is therefore mandatory. This study examined whether navigation accuracy can be improved in specific anatomical localizations by using hybrid registration technique. Study design Experimental phantom study. Setting Operating room. Subjects and methods The gold standard of screw registration was compared with automatic LED-mask-registration alone, and in combination with additional surface matching. 3D-printer-based skull models with individual fabricated silicone skin were u…
Water and Geodynamics
2006
Hydrogen is the most abundant element (Fig. 1⇓) in the galaxy and our solar system (Lodders 2003). Therefore it is not astonishing that hydrogen is a key player in the geodynamic evolution of planets. Its fate in the early Earth, after condensation of the solar nebula, the accretion of our planet and hydrogen reprocessing through early asteroidal and cometary bombardment (Dauphas et al. 2000) and segregation of a proto-Earth into iron core and silicate mantle is described elsewhere in this volume (Marty and Yokochi 2006). Figure 1. Abundance of elements in the solar system in numbers of atoms per 106 atoms of silicon (Lodders 2003). This chapter concerns itself with the geodynamics of the m…
Oxygen uptake kinetics and energy system's contribution around maximal lactate steady state swimming intensity
2017
Made available in DSpace on 2018-11-26T17:20:55Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2017-02-28 Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Ministry of Education of Brazil The purpose of this study was to examine the oxygen uptake ((V) over dotO(2)) kinetics and the energy systems' contribution at 97.5, 100 and 102.5% of the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) swimming intensity. Ten elite female swimmers performed three-to-five 30 min submaximal constant swimming bouts at imposed paces for the determination of the swimming velocity (v) at 100% MLSS based on a 7 x 200 m intermittent incremental protocol until voluntary exhaustion to find the v associated…
Chemical Composition of Scots Pine Bark as a Bioindicator of Environmental Quality in Riga, Latvia / Priežu Mizu ķīmiskais Sastāvs Kā Vides Stāvokļa …
2015
Abstract The chemical composition of pine bark was used for the determination of environmental quality in Rīga. Bark samples were collected at 54 sites in Rīga differing in vegetation and building area characteristics (urban forests, parks and cemeteries, dwelling houses, and streets and railway zones) and at 52 sites from rural areas in Latvia (background level). Concentrations of Ca, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni, Cu, Cd, Pb, and pH was determined in the samples. The results showed significantly higher concentrations of chemical elements in pine bark collected in Rīga, compared to background levels: Fe and Cu concentrations three times higher, and other elements - up to 1.8 times. The highest…
Augājs kā pilsētvides indikators Daugavpilī
2014
Šajā promocijas darbā ir apkopoti 2006.-2013. gadā veikto pētījumu rezultāti, kuros ir analizēta vides pārveidotības pakāpe Daugavpilī. Pētījumā tiek izmantotas trīs dažādu indikatoru grupas – neofītās vaskulārās augu sugas, epifītie ķērpji un priežu miza. Neofītās augu sugas inventarizētas visos 344 pilsētas kvadrātos, lihenoindikācijas dati iegūti no 82 kvadrātiem, metālu saturs priežu mizās noteikts 50 paraugvietās. Iegūtie rezultāti liecina, ka augstākās Daugavpilī pētīto ķīmisko elementu koncentrācijas priežu mizā konstatētas industriālo objektu tuvumā, lihenoindikācijas zemākie rādītāji saistāmi ar pilsētas centrālo daļu, ko raksturo blīvs ceļu tīkls un intensīva satiksme, kā arī priv…
