Plant sterol oxides in functional beverages: Influence of matrix and storage

Three plant sterol (PS)-enriched beverages, milk based fruit juice (MFJPS), fruit juice (FJPS) and milk beverage (MPS), were stored at 4, 24, or 37 °C and analysed at regular time intervals of 2 months until 6 months. PS stability was analysed from the production of phytosterol oxidation products (POPs). The β-sitosterol oxides (7α/7β-hydroxy, β/α-epoxy, triol, and 7-keto) and campesterol oxides (β/α-epoxy, and 7-keto) were detected in all beverages and at all storage times and temperatures. Total POP contents followed the order MPS≫FJPSMFJPS. In general, the beverages showed low PS oxidation levels (0.17%). Predictive models of POP content versus storage time were established. Effect of the natural winemaking process applied at industrial level on the microbiological and chemical characteristics of wine.

The composition of yeast and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) communities and the chemical evolution of the large-scale commercial vinification of Catarratto IGT Sicilia, carried out under the biological regime, was followed from grape harvest until bottling. Simultaneously to the maximum growth of yeasts, LAB counts reached high level of concentration (6-7 log CFU mL(-1)) during the first steps of the alcoholic fermentation. Yeast identification was determined applying different molecular methods. The highest species biodiversity was observed on grape and must samples taken soon after pressing. Saccharomyces cerevisiae was detected at dominant concentrations during the entire winemaking process.…

Evidence for a surface self-cleaning sputtering mechanism in fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry

Evidence for a surface self-cleaning sputtering mechanism in fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry involving significant sputtering from the bulk of the glycerol matrix has been obtained from (a) the time dependence of sample ion abundances and chemical noise for bioorganic compounds, (b) determinations of the sputtering volume in glycerol solution, and (c) studies of in situ chemical and biochemical reactions. The relevance of these results for optimal sample/matrix preparation in analytical applications is pointed out.

Sodium nitrate and tungsten as matrix modifiers for the determination of arsenic in shotgun pellets by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry

A method for the determination of arsenic in a complicated sample matrix by Zeeman effect electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry using tungsten and sodium nitrate as matrix modifiers was developed. The determination of arsenic in SRM C2416 (Bullet Lead) and SRM 2710 (Montana Soil) by ETAAS using a mixture of palladium and magnesium nitrate as a matrix modifier failed to obtain the certified concentrations at the 95% level of confidence using the t-test. Abstract The comparative far-infrared spectroscopy studies of Rb0.8Cs0.2Cl and Rb0.8Cs0.2Cl containing CsPbCl3 nanocrystals between 170 and 320 K are reported. The effect of cesium lead chloride nanocrystals on the phonon modes of the host matrix, particularly manifested in different temperature behavior of LO–TO splitting and the temperature dependence of high frequency dielectric constant, are demonstrated.

Preparation and characterization of organofunctionalized bentonite clay bearing aminophosphonic groups in heavy metal uptake

Abstract Bentonite (Bnt) with covalently immobilized N-propylaminodi(methylenephosphonic) groups (Bnt-ADPA) was obtained through a two-step synthesis including aminosilanization and phosphorylation of resulting aminobentonite through Moedritzer-Irani reaction. The grafting of an aminosilane layer in the interplanar space of the bentonite was investigated by XRD, and the presence of N and P-containing groups was confirmed by FTIR, 31P and 29Si MAS NMR. The immobilization of the organic functional groups increased the interplanar distance in bentonite matrix at 52% that essentially improved filtration properties compared to raw bentonite. Abstract An on-line gradient reversed phase liquid chromatography–Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (LC–FTIR) method was developed for the determination of fructose, glucose, sucrose and maltose in beverages. Improved chromatographic resolution was obtained using a linear gradient from 75 to 55% (v/v) acetonitrile in water in 15 min.
