Solute-induced Water Structure: Computer Simulation on a Model System

Abstract Two series of Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out on a system consisting of 125 water molecules, one of which is kept fixed to simulate a water molecule whose mobility is restricted by a solute. The results are checked against similar simulations without restrictions, used as a control, and they show how the blocked molecule helps increase both the structural order and the connectivity of the hydrogen bond network. Cooperativity originating from proton polarizability of H-bonds and/or from many-body terms of interaction potentials cannot be involved since we use a rigid water model and ab initio pair potentials. Naturally occurring polyphenols as building blocks for supramolecular liquid crystals – substitution pattern dominates mesomorphism

A modular supramolecular approach towards hydrogen-bonded liquid crystalline assemblies based on naturally occurring polyphenols is reported. The combination of experimental observations, crystallographic studies and semi-empirical analyses of the assemblies provides insight into the structure–property relationships of these materials. Here a direct correlation of the number of donor OH-groups as well as their orientation with the mesomorphic behavior is reported. Tungsten oxide nanorods were synthesized by a soft chemistry approach using tungsten alkoxide and trioctyl amine and oleic acid as the surfactants. The optical properties of the nanorods were studied. The nanorods were found to be soluble in a wide range of solvents like chloroform, cyclohexane, and so on. Upon solvent evaporation, the nanorods formed hierarchically organized solid state structures. Depending on the solvent used, the nanorods organized in different mesostructures. Moreover, the organization of the nanorods from mixtures of polar and nonpolar solvents was studied. Evaluation of the Stability of Pure Silica MCM-41 toward Water Vapor

Water vapor adsorption/desorption isotherms at 298 K and XRD measurements and nitrogen isotherms at 77 K before and after exposure to water vapor were determined on pure silica MCM-41 samples; samples had different pore widths and were prepared by different synthesis methods, including hydrothermal and room-temperature procedures. It was found that prolonged exposure to water vapor provoked structural alterations in all of the MCM-41 materials studied, the most significant effects being a loss of pore shape uniformity and a large decrease in pore size and, in consequence, pore volume. Abstract The time evolution of indigo plus palygorskite powdered mixtures during isothermal heating at different temperatures between 120 and 180 °C to form Maya Blue-type materials has been monitored by means of infrared spectrometry, diffuse reflectance spectrometry in the visible region and solid state electrochemical techniques. The consecutive layer-by-layer adsorption of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) on colloidal charged latex particles is investigated by measuring the electrophoretic mobility as a function of pH and ionic strength over a broad range (electrophoretic fingerprinting). Meaningful interpretation of the data required the development of a nonlinear approach to hairy particle electrophoresis including dissociation, adsorption, and association. An octadentate tetrahydroxamic calix[4]arene podand incorporating 1-hydroxypiperidine-2-one (1,2-PIPOH) binding units has been designed as a specific chelator for tetravalent metal cations like Zr4+ or Hf4+. This receptor, which can be considered as the first ever abiotic ligand possessing only cyclic six-membered hydroxamate groups, has been synthesized and characterized in its tetraprotonated form (1H4). Room Temperature Magnetism in Layered Double Hydroxides due to Magnetic Nanoparticles

Some recent reports claiming room temperature spontaneous magnetization in layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been published; however, the reported materials cause serious concern as to whether this cooperative magnetic behavior comes from extrinsic sources, such as spinel iron oxide nanoparticles. The syntheses of crystalline Fe(3+)-based LDHs with and without impurities have been developed, highlighting the care that must be taken during the synthetic process in order to avoid misidentification of magnetic LDHs.

[EN] The application of electrochemical techniques for obtaining analytical information of interest in the fields of archaeometry, conservation and restoration of cultural heritage goods is reviewed. Focused on voltammetry of immobilised particles and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques, electrochemical measurements offer valuable information for identifying and quantifying components, tracing provenances and manufacturing techniques and provide new tools for authentication and dating.
