Immune-Mediated Desquamative Gingivitis and Optical Coherence Tomography Diagnostic Patterns: Clinical Implication from a Systematic Review

2021

Desquamative Gingivitis (DG) comprises heterogeneous clinical manifestations of numerous immune-mediated muco-cutaneous diseases. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has been proposed as a valuable diagnostic support even if, to date, there are no standardized OCT-diagnostic patterns applicable to DGs. A systematic review was performed to detect existing data on in vivo OCT diagnostic patterns of the most common immune-mediated DGs (i.e., pemphigus vulgaris, mucous membrane pemphigoid and oral lichen planus). It has been found that OCT exhibits specific patterns that address the diagnosis of DG by pemphigus vulgaris (i.e., intraepithelial unilocular blister, reduced epithelial thickness, pre…

The debate on rare diseases : a look at media response

2015

Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la siguiente URL: https://ojs.uv.es/index.php/Metode/article/view/7188/7809 Este monográfico lleva por título "Science grid : the public understanding of science". Rare diseases (RDs) are those that affect fewer than five people in every 10,000. There are around 7,000 RDs, they are difficult to diagnose and very few have a treatment. This article explores how the media report on the arguments and counter-arguments regarding the access to drugs for these pathologies, with critical discourse analysis for the case of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. We concluded that, in times of crisis, the debate polarises around economic arguments (the price of drugs), r…

Lecanora Herteliana (Lecanoraceae, Ascomycetes), a New Lichen Species from Spain

2000

AbstractLecanora herteliana is described from several collections from hard siliceous sandstone, in typically Mediterranean habitats in eastern Spain. The new species has a whitish thallus containing atranorin and norstictic acid. Its apothecia are mostly black, with a thalline exciple, which is finally excluded, and with a well developed true exciple.Lecanora herteliana is most closely related to L. subcoarctata, and it is discussed in relation to this species and other members of the L. marginata group.

Zur Rolle von Sprachen an finnischen Hochschulen : Eine Umfrage unter dem Hochschulpersonal

2010

Suomessa on perinteisesti ymmärretty vieraiden kielten opiskelun tärkeys. Suomalaisissa peruskouluissa on opiskeltu vierasta kieltä pakollisena oppiaineena jo 1970-luvulta saakka. Viime vuosikymmeninä vieraiden kielten opiskelun into on kuitenkin laantunut, ja erityisesti valinnaisten kielten opiskelu on selkeästi vähentynyt. Samalla kuitenkin suomalainen työelämä kansainvälistyy, ja yhä useammilla aloilla vieraan kielen taidot ovat tarpeen. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää monikielisyyden, eli useiden vieraiden kielten osaamisen ja käytön, merkitystä suomalaisissa korkeakouluissa sekä erityisesti saksan ja ruotsin kielen roolia työkielinä. Kyselytutkimuksen avulla selvitettiin …

Identification of Morphological Biosignatures in Martian Analogue Field Specimens Using In Situ Planetary Instrumentation

2008

International audience; We have investigated how morphological biosignatures (i.e., features related to life) might be identified with an array of viable instruments within the framework of robotic planetary surface operations at Mars. This is the first time such an integrated lab-based study has been conducted that incorporates space-qualified instrumentation designed for combined in situ imaging, analysis, and geotechnics ( sampling). Specimens were selected on the basis of feature morphology, scale, and analogy to Mars rocks. Two types of morphological criteria were considered: potential signatures of extinct life ( fossilized microbial filaments) and of extant life (crypto-chasmoendolit…

Promiscuity in Lichens Follows Clear Rules: Partner Switching in Cladonia Is Regulated by Climatic Factors and Soil Chemistry

2022

Climatic factors, soil chemistry and geography are considered as major factors affecting lichen distribution and diversity. To determine how these factors limit or support the associations between the symbiotic partners, we revise the lichen symbiosis as a network of relationships here. More than one thousand thalli of terricolousCladonialichens were collected at sites with a wide range of soil chemical properties from seven biogeographical regions of Europe. A total of 18 OTUs of the algal genusAsterochlorisand 181 OTUs ofCladoniamycobiont were identified. We displayed all realized pairwise mycobiont–photobiont relationships and performed modularity analysis. It revealed four virtually sep…

Fungal Biofilms as a Valuable Target for the Discovery of Natural Products That Cope with the Resistance of Medically Important Fungi—Latest Findings

2021

The development of new antifungal agents that target biofilms is an urgent need. Natural products, mainly from the plant kingdom, represent an invaluable source of these entities. The present review provides an update (2017–May 2021) on the available information on essential oils, propolis, extracts from plants, algae, lichens and microorganisms, compounds from different natural sources and nanosystems containing natural products with the capacity to in vitro or in vivo modulate fungal biofilms. The search yielded 42 articles; seven involved essential oils, two Brazilian propolis, six plant extracts and one of each, extracts from lichens and algae/cyanobacteria. Twenty articles deal with th…

Eukaryotes Are a Holophyletic Group of Polyphyletic Origin.

2020

Because of the polyphyletic origin of the eukaryotic monophylum, eukaryogenesis within prokaryotes is not comparable with mammal origin within paraphyletic reptiles. Both synapomorphies and plesiomorphies represent apomorphies and are indeed suitable for defining monophyletic (holophyletic and paraphyletic) groups. Alphaproteobacteria (Bacteria) and Asgard (Archaea) are the ancestors of LECA (the Last Eukaryotic Common Ancestor). The presence of ESPs in Asgard does not dispute the polyphyletic origin of eukaryotes ; it only further corroborates it. “Candidatus Prometheoarchaeum syntrophicum” is the closest relative to eukaryotes and the only Asgard with available microscopy data. This newly…

Fungal-associated NO is involved in the regulation of oxidative stress during rehydration in lichen symbiosis

2010

[EN] Background Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are normally produced in respiratory and photosynthetic electron chains and their production is enhanced during desiccation/rehydration. Nitric oxide (NO) is a ubiquitous and multifaceted molecule involved in cell signaling and abiotic stress. Lichens are poikilohydrous organisms that can survive continuous cycles of desiccation and rehydration. Although the production of ROS and NO was recently demonstrated during lichen rehydration, the functions of these compounds are unknown. The aim of this study was to analyze the role of NO during rehydration of the lichen Ramalina farinacea (L.) Ach., its isolated photobiont partner Trebouxia sp. and Ast…
