Omalizumab outcomes for up to 6 years in pediatric patients with severe persistent allergic asthma
2021
BACKGROUND: Various studies have assessed omalizumab outcomes in the clinical practice setting but follow-up and/or number of patients included were limited. We aim to describe the long-term outcomes of pediatric patients with severe persistent allergic asthma receiving omalizumab in the largest real-life cohort reported to date. METHODS: ANCHORS was a multicenter, observational, retrospective cohort study conducted in 25 Pediatric Allergy and Pulmonology units in Spain. We collected data of patients < 18 years and initiating omalizumab between 2006 and 2018, from the year prior to omalizumab initiation to discontinuation or last available follow-up. The primary outcome was the evolution of…
Storie di guerra. Sfollati, rimpatriati, profughi a Palermo (1940-1943)
2018
In the realm of wartime history, a little real analysis has been done on the implications of total war in Sicily. Indeed, World War II transformed the relationship between fascist regime and society. Moreover, there are few studies on reorganization of the connections between local institutions and fascist government. Civilians have been most involved in this process. In this article, I will mainly adopt the perspective of civilians to reconstruct how war led to these transformations. I will focus on the city of Palermo, were war front and home front blurred together in 1943. Especially, I would like to highlight the stories of returned from fascist colonies in Africa, as well as the issue …
Motywy myśliwskie i łowieckie w "Płomyku" (1917-1939)
2016
The review of hunting texts published in the interwar periodical Płomyk shows their formal, genre, and narrative variety. In the periodical, literary works such as short stories, legends, folk tales, and memoirs function on nearly equal rights as paraliterary and joumalistic texts (reportages, discussions, prose of memorial and documentary character). One may distinguish two conventions: the realistic and the fabular-fantastical, with the former being dominant. They are joined by the common goal: to teach about culture, natural history, and geography, and to invoke emotions. The authors describe charms and natural riches of the country, while trying to convey educational values: responsibil…
Development of vocal performance in 5th grade children - A longitudinal study of choral class singing
2009
The primary aim of the study was to assess the effects of choral class singing on vocal performance in primary school children. In particular, changes of the singing voice in terms of voice range profiles (VRP) and dysphonia severity index (DSI) were measured over the period of one school year. A further aim was to compare the effects of choral singing and regular music curriculum. A total of 50 5th-graders were assigned to two groups. Tuition of the choral singing group (n = 32) entailed a focus on singing in class as well as weekly 30-minute-sessions of special vocal training in small groups. Children in the regular music tuition group (n = 18), which also included singing, were given ext…

Slow Populations and Tourism
2013
Our initial perspective is that the dynamics of territories and cities/towns that are tourist resorts (or aspire to being one) can be analysed from the point of view of the ‘population’ concept, dear to a certain trend in socio-spatial analysis. Our chapter concentrates particularly on those who, by need or will, pass through places without their own vehicle, but using collective or public transport, as well as walking or cycling, rather than by walker or wheelchair. These ‘slow populations’ enter into a relation with the places they visit or stay at, with the people who live there and the other tourists, following certain methods of which we suggest a sort of classification, aimed at a bet…
Using the Storytelling Method to Hear Children’s Perspectives and Promote Their Social-Emotional Competence
2019
This study investigated the use of a playful, narrative, vignette-based method, called Story Magician’s Play Time (SMPT), in supporting children’s social-emotional reasoning and in helping children practice their social skills. We set out to examine (a) in what ways children use SMPT sessions to explore social interaction situations and to practice social skills, and (b) what story content and narrative play behavior during the SMPT sessions reveal about the social-emotional competence of children, in terms of acquisition and performance skills. The data were collected during SMPT storytelling sessions where 5- to 6-year-old children narrated stories of familiar but challenging daily situa…

Positioning children with special educational needs in early childhood education and care documents
2018
The article critically discusses the practice of describing children’s special educational needs (SEN) in early childhood education and care (ECEC) pedagogical documents. Documentation is understood as a form of governance. In current practice, documentation is extensively used in educational institutions. Even when the focus of documentation should be pedagogical, the descriptions of children’s SEN commonly describe a child’s individual deficits as a source of educational problems. In this study, we used discourse analysis to investigate how professionals position children and construct their SEN in pedagogical documents. The research data consisted of 143 documents on 29 Finnish children.…
