Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors
2020
Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are key components of the epigenetic machinery controlling gene expression. They are involved in chromatin remodeling events via post-translational histone modifications but may also act on nonhistone proteins, influencing many fundamental cellular processes. Due to the key involvement of HDACs in serious human pathologies, including cancer, HDAC inhibitors (HDACis) have received increased attention in recent years. It is known that marine invertebrates produce significant amounts of secondary metabolites showing active pharmacological properties and an extensive spectrum of biomedical applications. Some of these compounds possess HDACi properties.

Larval trematode infections in freshwater gastropods from the Albufera Natural Park in Spain
1998
AbstractMalacological samplings were made from January 1994 to December 1996 in the Albufera Natural Park (Valencia, Spain) to trace the dynamics of molluscan populations and the prevalence and intensity of infection by larval trematodes. A total of 10,533 freshwater gastropods belonging to seven species (Lymnaea auricularia, L. truncatula, L. palustris, L. peregra, Bithynia tentaculata, Physa acuta and Gyraulus chinensis) was examined, and 110 (1.04%) were found to harbour some of the nine distinguishable types of cercariae, namely four echinostome cercariae (Hypoderaeum conoideum, Echinoparyphium recurvatum, Euparyphium albuferensis, and Echinostoma sp.), four furcocercous cercariae, and …

Diversispora valentina (Diversisporaceae), a new species of arbuscular mycor…
2020
A new arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal species, Diversispora valentina, is described and illustrated. In the field, this species is associated with marine dunes located along the Mediterranean coast in eastern Spain. Spores of D. valentina occurred in sporocarps, in clusters, and singly in the soil or inside the roots of Ammophila arenaria (Poaceae), Elymus farctus (Poaceae), Otanthus maritimus (Asteraceae), and Echinophora spinosa (Apiaceae) in the six locations studied. A single-species culture of D. valentina was obtained using Trifolium repens as a host plant. The small subunit internal transcribed spacer and large subunit (SSU-ITS1-5.8S-ITS2-LSU) nrDNA sequences place the new species in t…
An Analysis of the Process of Fertilization and Activation of the Egg
1957
Publisher Summary Fertilization consists fundamentally in the release of a chain of metabolic reactions by virtue of which morphogenesis is started. The result of fertilization is the activation of the egg. This can be achieved also by several agents other than the spermatozoon and it is then spoken of as “artificial activation.” This chapter discusses the structural, physiological, and chemical changes that occur in the egg at fertilization that are significant in the understanding of the mechanisms of the activation. The chapter presents the hypothesis that in the cortex of the unfertilized sea urchin egg an inhibitor–enzyme complex is present. By reacting with some substance introduced b…
Cytotoxicity of an unprecedented brominated oleanolide and a new furoceramide from the Cameroonian spice, Echinops giganteus
2016
A preliminary study on Echinops giganteus (Asteraceae) showed that the methanolic extract has interesting cytotoxicities against a panel of cancer cell lines. From this extract, a lignan, a flavonoid and a polyacetylenic thiophene identified were three times less cytotoxic than the extract. In the search of the metabolites responsible for the bioactivity, a new harvested E. giganteus was subjected to a phytochemical study using chromatographic methods. In the course of the work, two new compounds: a brominated oleanolide (1) and a tetrahydrofurano-ceramide (2) were obtained along with β-amyrin acetate (3), 2-(penta-1,3-diynyl)-5-(4-hydroxybut-1-ynyl)-thiophene (4), 2-(penta-1,3-diynyl)-5-(3…
In vivo anti-inflammatory activity of saponins from Bupleurum rotundifolium
2001
Seven oleanane-type triterpene saponins were isolated from the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Bupleurum rotundifolium. They were identified on the basis of their spectral data as 3-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1--2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1--2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]-28-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1--2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl] echinocystic acid (saponin 1), 3-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1--2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1--2)-beta-D-fucopyranosyl] 11-methoxy-primulagenin A (saponin 2), rotundioside E (saponin 3), rotundioside F (saponin 4), 3beta-sulfate, 28-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1--6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1--2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1--2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl] ester of primulagen…
Foetidissimosides C–F, Novel Glycosides from the Roots ofCucurbita foetidissima
2004
Two novel echinocystic acid (=(3β,16α)-3,16-dihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid) glycosides, foetidissimosides C (1), and D (2), along with new cucurbitane glycosides, i.e., foetidissimosides E/F (3/4) as an 1 : 1 mixture of the (24R)/(24S) epimers, were obtained from the roots of Cucurbita foetidissima. Their structures were elucidated by means of a combination of homo- and heteronuclear 2D-NMR techniques (COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, ROESY, HSQC, and HMBC), and by FAB-MS. The new compounds were characterized as (3β,16α)-28-{[O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(13)-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(14)-O-6-deoxy-α-L-mannopyranosyl-(12)-α-L-arabinopyranosyl]oxy}-16-hydroxy-28-oxoolean -12-en-3-yl β-D-glucopyranosiduronic acid (1…
