Secretory effect of azodisalicylate (azodisal sodium) on the short circuited mucosa of the rat ileum in vitro.
1988
Azodisalicylate (ADS) is one of the newly developed substitutes of sulphasalazine consisting of two molecules of 5-amino-salicylic acid. Azodisalicylate caused diarrhoea in some patients, apparently caused by an antiabsorptive secretagogue action of this compound. The mechanism of this was studied in the short circuited isolated mucosa of the rat ileum. Mucosal addition of ADS increased the potential difference (PD) and short circuit current (Isc) at a concentration of 1.3.10(-4) mol/l (4 mg/dl) with maximal effects at 1.3.10(-3) mol/l (40 mg/dl). Epithelial resistance was only slightly decreased at the higher concentrations of 40 and 100 mg/dl. Serosal ADS had no effect on electrical param…
Model-specific effects of bumetanide on epileptiform activity in the in-vitro intact hippocampus of the newborn mouse.
2007
The immature brain has a higher susceptibility to develop seizures, which often respond poorly to classical pharmacological treatment. It has been recently suggested that bumetanide, which blocks Na(+)-dependent K(+)-Cl(-)-cotransporter isoform 1 (NKCC1) and thus attenuates depolarizing GABAergic responses, could soothe epileptiform activity in immature nervous systems. To evaluate whether bumetanide consistently attenuates epileptiform activity, we investigated the effect of 10 microM bumetanide in five different in-vitro epilepsy models using field potential recordings in the CA3 region of intact mouse hippocampal preparations at postnatal day 4-7. Bumetanide reduced amplitude and frequen…

Effect of Phenylephrine on the Accommodative System
2016
Accommodation is controlled by the action of the ciliary muscle and mediated primarily by parasympathetic input through postganglionic fibers that originate from neurons in the ciliary and pterygopalatine ganglia. During accommodation the pupil constricts to increase the depth of focus of the eye and improve retinal image quality. Researchers have traditionally faced the challenge of measuring the accommodative properties of the eye through a small pupil and thus have relied on pharmacological agents to dilate the pupil. Achieving pupil dilation (mydriasis) without affecting the accommodative ability of the eye (cycloplegia) could be useful in many clinical and research contexts. Phenylephr…
66 RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PLASMA CHLORIDE LEVELS AND FOLLICLE DIAMETER IN CYCLING SPANISH PUREBRED MARES
2014
Several studies in cows have shown that plasma levels of chloride are positively correlated with the diameter of the preovulatory follicle (FD), establishing at the same time a significant positive association between plasma levels and intraoviducal concentration of this electrolyte (Hugentobler et al. 2007). These relationships may reflect the influence of changes in systemic metabolic plasma on follicular fluid, physiological events that might be closely related to the quality of the oocyte and granulosa cells of the preovulatory follicle (LeRoy et al. 2004). However, these mechanisms remain unknown in the mare. The objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between p…
Estrogen receptor agonists and immune system in ovariectomized mice.
2006
Several data implicate the immune system in bone lost after estrogen deficiency, however, some of the effects on the immune system of estrogen deficiency or of estrogen receptor (ER) modulation are not well established. In this study, the effect of ER agonists on the immune system in ovariectomized mice is analyzed. Mice were ovariectomized and were administered 17β-estradiol (E2), raloxifene (RAL) or genistein (GEN). The effect of a 4-week treatment on bone turnover and on several parameters that reflect the status of the immune system was studied. Results show that ovariectomy provoked both uterine atrophy and thymic hypertrophy. Although RAL corrected thymic hypertrophy, only E2 correct…
Comparative effects of estradiol, raloxifene, and genistein on the uterus of ovariectomized mice.
2005
To explore the uterine effects of administration of compounds that exert their bone-sparing functions through estrogen receptors, we administered 17beta-E2, raloxifene, or genistein to ovariectomized mice and analyzed the uterus weight and histology 4 weeks after beginning the treatments. Results indicated that raloxifene and genistein have partial agonistic properties on the uterus in estrogen-depleted mice, and that genistein induced apoptosis and several atypias in the glandular epithelium of endometrium, as demonstrated in hematoxylin-eosin-stained histological sections.
Haliotis tuberculata hemocyanin (HtH): analysis of oligomeric stability of HtH1 and HtH2, and comparison with keyhole limpet hemocyanin KLH1 and KLH2
2000
The multimeric/higher oligomeric states of the two isoforms of Haliotis tuberculata hemocyanin (HtH1 and HtH2) have been assessed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of negatively stained specimens, for comparison with previously published structural data from keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH1 and KLH2) [see Harris, J.R., Gebauer, W., Guderian, F.U., Markl, J., 1997a. Keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH), I: Reassociation from Immucothel followed by separation of KLH1 and KLH2. Micron, 28, 31-41; Harris, J.R., Gebauer, W., Söhngen, S.M., Nermut, M.V., Markl, J., 1997b. Nikkelin kertyminen täplärapuun (Pacifastacus leniusculus) kahdessa eri lämpötilassa
2017
Kaivostoiminnan aiheuttamat metallipäästöt ovat maailmanlaajuinen ympäristöongelma. Kaivospäästöjen takia metalleja pääsee luontoon ja eliöstöön biosaatavassa vesiliukoisessa muodossa kuten sulfaatteina tai klorideina. Nikkeli on bioakkumuloituva eliöille haitallinen metalli, jota käytetään teollisuuden raaka-aineena ympäri maailmaa. Tässä tutkielmassa tarkasteltiin nikkelin kertymistä täplärapuun (Pacifastacus leniusculus) laboratorio-olosuhteissa kahdella 14 vrk:n altistuskokeella eri nikkelialtistuspitoisuuksilla kahdessa eri lämpötilassa (7 ja 17 °C). Eri testilämpötiloilla pyrittiin selvittämään, onko nikkelin kertyminen riippuvaista vaihtolämpöisen täpläravun aineenvaihduntatasosta. K…
The vesicular transfer of CLIC1 from glioblastoma to microvascular endothelial cells requires TRPM7.
2018
Chloride intracellular channel 1 (CLIC1) is highly expressed and secreted by human glioblastoma cells and cell lines such as U87, initiating cell migration and tumor growth. Here, we examined whether CLIC1 could be transferred to human primary microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC). We previously reported that the oncogenic microRNA, miR-5096, increased the release of extracellular vesicles (EVs) by which it increased its own transfer from U87 to surrounding cells. Thus, we also examined its effect on the CLIC1 transfer. In homotypic cultures, miR-5096 did not increase the expression of CLIC1 in U87 nor in HMEC. However, the endothelial CLIC1 level increased after exposure to EVs released b…
