The light-harvesting complexes (LHC) were isolated from the unicellular alga Mantoniella squamata (Prasinophyceae) by sucrose-density centrifugation. Beside the major LHC (II), a photosystem I complex was obtained that could be dissociated into a photosystem I core complex and an associated LHC I. Abstract The cyclic development of anoxic conditions in the eastern Mediterranean deep sea waters is one of the most fascinating research topics in paleoceanographic studies. The recently developed configuration interaction exciton model has been applied to study spectral shifts and B800 to B850 energy transfer rates in a series of modified LH2 light harvesting antenna complexes of the purple bacterium Rhodopseudomonas acidophila. Complexes, where the in vivo B800 bacteriochlorophyll a chromophores are exchanged with different tetrapyrroles including chlorophyll a were studied. Summary The influence of zeaxanthin on high-energy-state quenching (qE) of room temperature chlorophyll fluorescence and on the quantum yield of oxygen evolution(ФO2) has been studied with isolated spinach thylakoids. A set of three different pretreatments was tested which all led to thylakoids with high contents of zeaxanthin. Depending on the presence of light the pretreatments differed strongly with respect to their effect on nonphotochemical fluorescence quenching. Abstract A photosystem (PS) I holocomplex was isolated from Pleurochloris meiringensis Vischer (Xanthophyceae) using sucrose density centrifugation. This complex exhibited a fluorescence emission maximum at 715 nm, which is in accordance with the long wavelength emission of whole cells. The complex was further dissociated into a core complex and a light-harvesting protein (LHC I). The core protein contains mainly Chl a and β-carotene, is 8.25 times enriched in P700 and has its main emission maximum at 715 nm. Abstract The influence of zeaxanthin on the high-energy-state fluorescence quenching (qE) and the pH dependence of the maximum chlorophyll fluorescence yield (Fm) was examined in spinach thylakoids. High contents of zeaxanthin were achieved using different pretreatments. A pronounced, zeaxanthin-dependent amplification of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) was exclusively found in thylakoids containing zeaxanthin, synthesized in the dark via the buildup of an artificial ΔpH. These thylakoids also showed a significant quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence in the range pH 5.5–6.3, where no or only slight quenching was visible in zeaxanthin-free thylakoids. The contribution presents the development and testing of a fluorescence retrieval scheme based on the ESA's FLuorescence EXplorer mission concept. The algorithm employs on a coupled surface-atmosphere forward model at oxygen absorption bands: i) the atmospheric effect is computed by MODTRAN5; ii) the surface reflectance and fluorescence are modeled by means of the Spectral Fitting approach. This study presents quasielastic neutron scattering data of the water-soluble chlorophyll-binding protein (WSCP) and the corresponding buffer solution at room temperature. The contributions of protein and buffer solution to the overall scattering are carefully separated. Otherwise, the fast water dynamics dominating the buffer contribution is likely to mask the slow protein dynamics.
