The nature of quantities influences the representation of arithmetic problems: evidence from drawings and solving procedures in children and adults

International audience; When solving arithmetic problems, semantic factors influence the representations built (Gamo, Sander & Richard, 2010). In order to specify such interpretative processes, we created structurally isomorphic word problems that could be solved with two distinct algorithms. We tested whether a distinction between cardinal and ordinal quantities would lead solvers, due to their daily-life knowledge, to build different representations, influencing their strategies as well as the nature of their drawings. The authors report the survey of some flowerbeds located in the city of Palermo with the aim of assessing the sustainability of the plants and the interventions to be implemented, i.e. cutting or transfer of plants, to achieve a sustainable green. This is an important result but the significance of the mechanism must also be sought in a context broader than that of fiscal federalism and without limitation to relations and processes fully observable. The aim of this essay is both historical and philosophical. On the histori. level, the following remarks are intended to contribute to a better understanding of the missing reception of the more advanced parts of Luitzen E. J. Brouwer’s intuitionistic mathematics. More precisely, I want to draw attention to a crucial technical difficulty in Brouwer’s treatment of the basic theorems of intuitionistic analysis.
