The voluntary supply of collective goods by nonprofit institutions has deserved little attention in the Public Choice literature, and the clasical nonprofits approach does not consider nonprofits supply as a collective decision, although individuals, either as consumers or as donors, are in the center of their theoretical constructs. In this paper we hypothesize that voluntary nonprofits' provision is a collective choice. We present a model in which the members of a community, both those who fund the nonprofits and those who do not (free riders) vote, so choosing between a political program of governmental supply and a political program of non governmental supply. Afterward, they must also …
In Search of Determinants of Time-Discounting in Monetary Choices : Personal Characteristics Matter Only a Little
2022
Time-discounting in monetary choices is determined by aspects related to the reward, contextual factors and characteristics of a person. In the present study, we used three datasets (Ndata1 = 419; Ndata2 = 485; Ndata3 = 240) to examine how well personal characteristics (sociodemographic, financial situation, self-control, cognitive abilities, negative experiencing, and trustfulness) predict time-discounting in both hypothetical and real reward scenarios. The results of the regression analyses indicate that the characteristics of a person only explain a small proportion of the variance in time-discounting (R2 ranged from .10 to .19). The only substantive predictors of time-discounting in mon…

Choosing an A2-language and language education from teachers’ point of view
2015
Language education policy consists of multiple levels, all the way from the European Union to teachers in local schools. Bearing in mind that even teachers have a role to play in language education policy our bachelor’s thesis aimed to create an overall picture of what knowledge do primary school teachers and headmasters in the Jyväskylä area possess relating language education matters and more specifically the A2-language. The study also examined the situations in which the teachers would or would not recommend the A2-language to a pupil. How the teachers act in the process of choosing the A2-language was also the focus of this study. This article affords a glance to our research and its r…
The Socio-Material Value of Language Choices in Mozambique and Finland
2022
AbstractThis chapter explores parental choice of language programs from a socio-material standpoint. It uses a DeleuzoGuattarian framework of smooth and striated spaces to understand how parents in Mozambique and Finland position themselves when making choices concerning their children’s language education. We analyzed interviews from Finland and focus groups and policy documents from Mozambique to understand the materialities and social discourses that constitute parental choice. We found that in Finland, materiality as a physical space (e.g., school location) factored into caregivers’ decision making when selecting schools for their children. In Mozambique, in turn, materiality as socioec…

The Latent Factors Behind the Urban Travel Behaviour
2014
Abstract This research aims to explore the impact of latent variables, mirroring the users’ preferences, on the individual decision making process regarding the mode of transport. The paper describes the first results of an ongoing research activity, which derives from a pilot study carried out in Palermo. The authors have administered to a sample of travellers a questionnaire and they simulated the mode choice behaviour referring to the random utility theory. Then the transport demand over the entire area of Palermo has been studied in order to design the cordon pricing scenario with the application of an additional cost on private car dedicated to a selected area of the historic centre of…
By accident or by design? : social enterprise leaders' stories of their career choice
2016
Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on tulkita ja kuvata yhteiskunnallisten yritysten johtaji-en uranvalintaa. Uranvalinta johtamisen parissa yhteiskunnallisissa yrityksissä on melko vähän tutkittu aihe, jonka vuoksi aiheeseen on syytä perehtyä lisää kokonaisvaltaisemman ymmärryksen saavuttamiseksi.
Consumers' attitude towards rice cooking processes in Korea, Japan, Thailand and France
2013
UT: 000317947100009; International audience; Concerns and attitudes towards nutrition, health, safety, commodity, and sensory appeal are the factors determining cooking processes in one's everyday life. A picture-word matching task was conducted in order to compare consumer's opinion on seven common rice-cooking processes (rinsing, soaking, adding other kinds of rice, cereals, and beans, brown rice germination, rapid-boiling, pressure-cooking, and steaming) in Korea, Japan, Thailand, and France. The results showed that, in each country, the more familiar a cooking process is, the more it is associated with sensory quality. Pressure-cooking, soaking and rapid-boiling were positively matched …
Business Models and Market Entry Mode Choice of Small Software Firms
2007
So far the critical choice of the entry mode for a target country has been examined ignoring the special features of firms. Particularly, the impact of the wide variation of business models of software firms has been ignored. This multi-case study investigates the relation between the business model and the entry mode of eight software firms. The results imply that the product strategy and the service and implementation model of a software firm are closely connected to the entry mode choice, while the distribution model of intangible software products does not seem to have impact on the operation mode. peerReviewed
