Symptoms and complications of pertussis in adults

There is increasing evidence that pertussis occurs frequently in adults, but there is limited information on the clinical course of this disease beyond childhood. A household contact study on the efficacy of an acellular pertussis vaccine was used to study the symptoms of pertussis in adults. Among 257 patients with pertussis identified in 121 families during a two-year period in one study center with a low whole-cell pertussis-vaccine uptake, 79 (30.7%) were adults, aged 19–83 years (mean age: 36 years) with a 1:1.8 male to female ratio. Abstract Background Coronoid hyperplasia (CH) is an abnormal bony elongation of a histologically normal coronoid process. Its definitive cause remains unknown. Objectives To analyze the possible implication of congenital hypotonia in the pathogenesis of early coronoid overgrowth. Patients and methods Two infants with congenital hypotonia were evaluated for limited mouth aperture. Bilateral CH was diagnosed. Transoral coronoidectomy was followed by an early dynamic physiotherapy program. Results Significant improvement of maximum interincisal opening was achieved. This study analyzes how psychological pressure affects performance. It refers to the discussion on differences between choking, i.e., an acute performance decline under pressure and under- performance under pressure. When performance outcomes are not defined binary even slight performance decrements can have huge consequences for future career. To study the conse- quences of psychological pressure on performance, we employ data on the serving performance of 213 professional volleyball athletes in 226 matches. A 16-month-old boy was referred to the emergency department of the Children's Clinical University Hospital (Riga, Latvia) due to cough and noisy breathing for 3 months. The complaints seemed to have worsened over time with coughing fits 2–4 days a week and the boy not being able to tolerate solid food (leading to vomiting) during the fits. In between the bouts, he felt fine. Diminished food intake was noted over the last month. Over the 3-month period, no other symptoms were noted. SUMMARY Sleep–wake problems are frequent, although unrecognized, complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep-disordered breathing and restless legs syndrome have all been reported in patients with ALS, despite the limited number of studies and the small populations investigated so far. Sleep disturbances gradually worsen with disease progression, suggesting a relationship between the severity of disease and the neurodegenerative process.
