Familial Combined Hyperlipidemia, Metabolic Syndrome and Cardiovascular Disease

2006

Our aim was to investigate the relationship between metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease (i.e., survivors of myocardial infarction) in patients with familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCH). We compared a group of 20 male patients with FCH who had survived a myocardial infarction with two other groups matched for age and body mass index, comprising 20 individuals with FCH who had not had a myocardial infraction and 20 control subjects. Plasma lipid, glucose, and insulin levels were determined. Metabolic syndrome was judged to present on the basis of World Health Organization (WHO) and National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult treatment panel (NCEP-ATPIII) criteria. Differences bet…

Should we measure routinely oxidised and atherogenic dense low-density lipoproteins in subjects with type 2 diabetes?

2010

Beyond low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol concentrations, in recent years, several clinical studies have shown that both oxidised and small, dense LDL have a strong predictive role for the presence of vascular atherosclerosis. These two lipid parameters seem to have a synergistic impact on cardiovascular risk, with a greater importance in patients at higher-risk, such as those with type-2 diabetes. Increased levels of oxidised and small, dense LDL levels are a feature of diabetic dyslipidaemia, and small, dense LDL have been shown to be a good predictor of future cardiovascular events, at both univariate and multivariate analyses. On the other hand, although the association of oxidis…

Use of Expert Consensus to Improve Atherogenic Dyslipidemia Management

2013

Abstract Introduction and objectives Although atherogenic dyslipidemia is a recognized cardiovascular risk factor, it is often underassessed and thus undertreated and poorly controlled in clinical practice. The objective of this study was to reach a multidisciplinary consensus for the establishment of a set of clinical recommendations on atherogenic dyslipidemia to optimize its prevention, early detection, diagnostic evaluation, therapeutic approach, and follow-up. Methods After a review of the scientific evidence, a scientific committee formulated 87 recommendations related to atherogenic dyslipidemia, which were grouped into 5 subject areas: general concepts (10 items), impact and epidemi…

Treat-to-target versus dose-adapted statin treatment of cholesterol to reduce cardiovascular risk

2015

Clinical guidelines should be based on the best available evidence and are of great importance for patient care and disease prevention. In this respect, the 2013 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association report is highly appreciated and well-recognized. The report included critical questions concerning hypercholesterolaemia, but its translation into a clinical guideline initiated intense debate worldwide because of the recommendation to switch from a treat-to-target approach for low-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol to a statin dose-based strategy.

Diet and Gallstones in Women of a Rural Town of Sicily

1997

To test the possible association between dietary factors and gallstones, we performed a case-control study on the dietary habits of 71 women with gallstones in a rural area of Sicily (mean age 63.2 years) and compared these with 142 women who did not have gallstones (mean age 63.6 years) selected at random from the same general population. The dietary questionnaire, based on data collected over 7 days, was carefully compiled by two dieticians specially trained for the study. The daily calorie intake was higher in the women with gallstones ( p= 0.006) and was equally distributed between fats, carbohydrates and proteins. The intakes of unsaturated fats ( p= 0.03), unrefined sugars ( p= 0.01) …

Colesterol-no HDL como objetivo terapéutico

2019

Although cholesterol linked to low-density lipoproteins (c-LDL) is well established as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, there is often a more complex dyslipidaemia pattern that contributes to the formation of atherosclerotic plaque. Non-HDL cholesterol (c-NO-HDL) is used to estimate the total amount of atherogenic lipoproteins in plasma, some of which are not usually determined in daily clinical practice. c-NO-HDL is easily calculated from the subtraction of total plasma cholesterol from the cholesterol content carried by high density lipoproteins. The c-NO-HDL has a predictive value superior to that of C-LDL to estimate the risk of major cardiovascular events in epidemiological st…

Therapeutic dosages of oral or transdermal estradiol did not modify sCD40L levels in postmenopausal women.

2008

The CD40/CD40L system is considered a crucial modulator of the inflammatory process underlying the progression and complication of atheroma plaques. The soluble fraction of CD40L (sCD40L) is a reliable indicator of the CD40/CD40L system. Our purpose was to investigate whether a therapeutic dose of estradiol, by either the oral or the transdermal route, was associated with changes in circulating levels of sCD40L. Forty-seven women completed a 4-week course of treatment with either oral estradiol valerate (2 mg/day, 20 women) or transdermal estradiol (50 microg/day, 27 women). Serum levels of sCD40L were measured by conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Oral, but not transdermal est…

0470 : Serum IF1 concentration as a predictor of mortality in coronary heart disease patients

2015

Aim The ecto-F1-ATPase/P2Y13 pathway plays a key role in reverse cholesterol transport. Exogenous IF1, known as the natural mitochondrial specific inhibitor of F1-ATPase activity, inhibits ecto-F1-ATPase activity and decreases HDL-C uptake by hepatocytes. We previously found that IF1 is present in human serum and is negatively associated with coronary heart disease (CHD). Here, we investigated the relationship between serum IF1 concentration and mortality in CHD patients. Methods Serum IF1 was measured in 624 CHD patients aged 45-74 from the GENES (Genetique et ENvironement en Europe du Sud) study. After 9.1 years follow up, mortality rate was 24.5%. Results Patients who had died were older…

Effect of β-cryptoxanthin plus phytosterols on cardiovascular risk and bone turnover markers in post-menopausal women: a randomized crossover trial.

2014

Abstract Background and aim Post-menopausal women are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease and bone demineralization. Phytosterols (PS) may be used for hypercholesterolemia in some groups and β-cryptoxanthin (β-Cx) displays a unique anabolic effect on bone. Our aim was to assess the changes in cardiovascular and bone turnover markers from the oral intake of β-Cx and PS in post-menopausal women. Methods and results A randomized, double-blind, crossover study with β-Cx (0.75 mg/day) and PS (1.5 g/day), single and combined, was performed in 38 postmenopausal women. Diet was supplemented with 1 × 250 mL milk-based fruit drink/day for 4 weeks with a wash-out period of 4-weeks in between. Ser…
