Presence of thyroid hormones in ascidian larvae and their involvement in metamorphosis

In this study we investigated the presence and localization of thyroxine in Ciona intestinalis larvae and its involvement in metamorphosis. To date, the mechanisms regulating the metamorphosis of ascidians remain largely unknown. In vivo treatment of swimming larvae with exogenous L-thyroxine and thiourea, and in vitro experiments utilizing high performance liquid chromatography, radioimmunoassay, and immunoperoxidase staining demonstrate the presence of thyroxine at the larval stage. This suggests that this hormone may participate in the control of metamorphosis and thus play a different role from that observed in adults.

To determine the pattern of hemispheric lateralization during sound-change discrimination, we recorded the magnetic counterpart of the electrical mismatch negativity (MMNm) responses in professional musicians, musical participants (with high scores in the musicality tests but without professional training in music) and non-musicians. Background: Epidural dumbbell-shaped chordomas are localized slow growing, and malignant/aggressive neoplasms. Here, we present a 62-year-old male with a T3-T4 dumbbell-shaped chordoma and reviewed the appropriate literature. Case Description: A 62-year-old male presented with a three-month history of thoracic pain. When the thoracolumbar magnetic resonance (MR) showed a T3-T4 dumbbell-shaped intracanalicular/extradural tumor, he underwent tumor removal. After the histological examination proved the lesion was a spinal chordoma, he underwent a secondary radical transthoracic tumor resection. Previous empirical research on harmony perception has mainly been concerned with horizontal aspects of harmony: studies focusing on vertical harmony perception have been rare. In this paper we focus on Chord P2P protocol and we study the process of unexpected departures of nodes from this system. Each of such departures may effect in losing any information and in classical versions of this protocol the probability of losing some information is proportional to the quantity of information put into this system. This effect can be partially solved by gathering in the protocol multiple copies (replicas) of information. The replication mechanism was proposed by many authors. Previous research on music and emotions has been able to pinpoint many structural features conveying emotions. Empirical research on vertical harmony’s emotional qualities, however, has been rare. The main studies in harmony and emotions usually concern the horizontal aspects of harmony, ignoring emotional qualities of chords as such. Communicating voice emphasis in harpsichord performance

We investigated the means used by harpsichordists to communicate voice-specific melodic emphasis. Twelve harpsichordists were asked to perform a short Baroque polyphonic piece by Frescobaldi (1583-1643) on a harpsichord equipped with a MIDI console. Three conditions were tested, each requiring performers to emphasize a particular voice in the piece (soprano, alto, tenor). Four parameters were analyzed: velocity, note onset asynchrony, timing deviations, and articulation. Mean onset asynchronies were much larger than those observed in organ or piano performance, averaging more than 100 ms between outer voices.
