Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a variety of polyoxometalates of different shapes, sizes, and charges were prepared by taking advantage of the adsorption properties of these polyanions on a positively charged monolayer of an organic surfactant spread on water. Three different aspects were investigated. 1) The electrochemical and electrochromic properties of LB films containing the easily reducible polyoxoanion [P2Mo18O62]6-. Absorbance changes of these LB films deposited onto an ITO substrate have been induced by repeated switching of the applied potential. Combined Theoretical and Experimental Study of the Photophysics of Asulam

The photophysics of the neutral molecular form of the herbicide asulam has been described in a joint experimental and theoretical, at the CASPT2 level, study. The unique π → π* aromatic electronic transition (f, ca. 0.5) shows a weak red-shift as the polarity of the solvent is increased, whereas the fluorescence band undergoes larger red-shifts. Solvatochromic data point to higher dipole moment in the excited state than in the ground state (μ(g)μ(e)). The observed increase in pKa in the excited state (pKa* - pKa, ca. 3) is consistent with the results of the Kamlet-Abboud-Taft and Catalán et al. multiparametric approaches. Electrochromic polyoxometalate material as a sensor of bacterial activity

L. fermentum, a bacterium of human microbiota, acts as an electron donor to the electrochromic [P2MoVI18O62]6. Since, the reductive capacity of L. fermentum correlates with its metabolic activity, the reaction with [P2MoVI18O62]6- affords a means of evaluating its activity. Following this logic, we have concluded that vancomycin severely affects the activity of L. fermentum whereas omeprazole does not.
A crystalline and free-standing silver thiocarboxylate thin-film showing high green to yellow luminescence

The simple direct synthesis of Cu(ii) and Ag(i) salts and thiobenzoic acid under ambient conditions allows the preparation of two bidimensional coordination polymers [M(TB)] (TB = thiobenzoate; M = Cu (1) or Ag (2)). Their electrical and luminescent properties show that these are multifunctional materials. Interestingly 1 and 2 undergo a reversible solubilization process. This unusual feature and their simple preparation allow us to prepare a crystalline and free-standing thin-film of 2, using an interfacial procedure, which shows a remarkable thermochromic luminescence.

The Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus, a widely used freshwater aquaculture species, is especially imperiled by this phenomenon since it is recognized by the IUCN as an endangered taxon due to genetic admixture with O. niloticus an invasive congeneric species. H-Y antigen, presumably the product of mammalian testis-determining genes, has been detected in three species of teleost fish, Xiphophorus maculatus, Haplochromis burtoni, and Oryzias latipes, and in hybrids of the genus Tilapia. In X. maculatus H-Y was most readily detected in YY males, suggesting that a genetic determinant of H-Y antigen expression may exist on the teleost Y-chromosome. Although H-Y was detected in males and not in females in each of the species that we studied, male heterogamety has not been firmly established for H. burtoni.
