Stratégies d’adaptation face à la douleur chronique

2017

Chronic pain constitutes a challenge for patients. It makes them uneasy with regard to their personality, their corporality and their life balance, and leaves long-lasting effects on their experience as a patient. The development of adaptation strategies and resources to deal with chronic pain is therefore essential.

Chronic pain management in non-oncologic patients: multicentric study on adult patients referring to the centers for pain management in the Lazio Reg…

2013

Introduction Chronic pain is a complex phenomenon usually associated with psychological stress, which implies falling back on the National Health Service and reducing work capacities, indeed affecting Activities of Daily Living. Studies based on efficacy have identified the multidisciplinary approach as the most effective means to obtain therapeutic results. These programs can be provided by the Centers for Pain Management (CPMs), where multidisciplinary teams are likely to provide the necessary expertise to outline the best treatments for the diagnosis and management of chronic pain. To date, very little information is available on the kind of assistance and support these centers can provi…

The effects of a medical hypnotherapy on clothing industry employees suffering from chronic pain.

2013

Abstract Background Problems associated with pain in several body regions due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMDs), repetitive movement and negative stress at work are quite common in many manufacturing industries of Latvia, int.al. clothing industry. The aim of this study was to evaluate efficiency of the psychotherapeutic intervention using medical hypnotherapy (MH) program for mind-body relaxation with pain-blocking imagery, cognitive restructuring of unpleasant physical and emotional experience. Methods 300 sewers and 50 cutters with chronic pain were involved in the study. Self-rated WRMDs symptoms, pain intensity and interference were assessed using the extended version o…

Specific versus non-specific exercises for chronic neck or shoulder pain : a systematic review

2021

The current systematic review aimed to compare the effect of injury-focused (specific) exercises versus more general (non-specific) exercises on pain in patients with chronic neck or shoulder pain. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science. Two reviewers screened and selected studies, extracted outcomes, assessed risk of bias, and rated the quality of evidence. A total of nine eligible studies, represented in 13 articles, were identified, with a considerable risk of bias. One article investigated the acute effect of single bouts of exercise on pain and reported an immediate pain reduction after non-specific exercise. Regarding short-term effects, seven out of the nine studies found no …

Acute and chronic pain

2017

Acute or chronic pain is a complex multidimensional neuronal response that draws attention to damaging or potentially damaging situations. A complex cascade of events takes place between the triggering occurrence of irritation and the final result of pain perception. In the beginning the nociceptor transforms the noxious threat into a signal.

Chronic pain treatment through virtual reality

2017

Chronic pain is a notable issue of public healthcare, causing enormous direct and indirect costs, and a reduction of the quality of life in the affected patients. In this study, we have used Virtual Reality (VR) as a method to reduce stress, anxiety and pain in patients affected by chronic pain. We examined two cohorts of patients: an experimental group and a control group. The patients in the experimental group were administered eight VR sessions, each of those lasted thirty minutes, while the control group had a standard therapy. The results are encouraging: they demonstrate the efficacy of VR treatment and the safety of the method.

Update on mechanism and therapeutic implications of spinal cord stimulation and cerebral hemodynamics: A narrative review

2017

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is well known for its early role in the management of chronic pain, mainly failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS), spasticity, and bowel and bladder dysfunction. In more recent years, SCS has been proposed for patients suffering from refractory angina or peripheral vasculopathies in order to gain symptom relief, thus indicating some hemodynamic effect on the peripheral circulation. Taking into account this scientific observation, since the late1980s, researchers have started to investigate the potential effect of SCS on cerebral blood flow (CBF) regulation and its possible application in certain pathological settings dealing with vascular pattern dysfunction, such…

Temporality of Maternity, Chronic Pain, and Ethics: Challenging Current Narratives on Pain and Health

2021

This chapter aims to articulate new ethical possibilities made apparent during experiences of chronic pain, and suggest an ethics of temporality apparent in the mother–child relation. I also aim to bring an understanding of the complexity and diversity of subjectivities in pain and its impact on its social, intersubjective environment. The narratives of mothers who have experienced chronic pain for more than three months help articulate a gap found in the Western model of medical knowledge. I hope to shift attention from the perspective of a patient understood as an objectified object of pain and from pain as a separate object of study to a study of the concrete embodied experiences of moth…

Measuring Muscle Fatigue in Relation to the Workload of Health Care Workers

2015

Abstract Number of work related musculoskeletal disorders due to ergonomics risks among workers in Europe, including Latvia, is growing. Employees in health care professions admit physical load and discomfort in various body parts after the shift. According to Eurostat statistical data 60% of total work related diseases are attributed to musculoskeletal disorders in Latvia. The aim of this study was to determine the muscle fatigue caused by physical load for surgeons, anaesthetists and geneticists in one of the largest Hospitals in Latvia. The research involved 9 surgeons, 9 anaesthetists and 7 geneticists with chronic pain (for four months or more) in the neck, shoulders, arms, hands and l…
