Favara Farm Cultural Park. Una sequenza non lineare. A non-linear sequence

2018

This essay proposes a reflection on the Farm Cultural Parck as a place in transformation. The Farm project describes a daily life that is not attracted to fashion trends. For this reason, as in a diachronic trip, we describe the latent urban transformation and the emergence of a new awareness in the difficult local situation.

2017

In 1945, writing about the procession of Our Lady of Viggiano, Carlo Levi presents us a peasant world characterized by archaic beliefs and ritual practices, another world « where seasons run on peasant fatigue, [...] like three thousand years before Christ », a world « veiled with black veils, fiery and earthly [...] which you do not enter without a key of magic ». If that other world of the peasants seems to have come to an end today, the beliefs, practices and ritual symbols of reputed “pre-Christian” precedence or in any case alien to the official liturgy, as witnessed by Levi and many other narrators and demoanthropologists from the 19th and 20th century are not, however, definitively l…

Self-Perceived Health, Objective Health, and Quality of Life among People Aged 50 and Over: Interrelationship among Health Indicators in Italy, Spain…

2020

It is well known that self-perceived health (SPH), even if it is a subjective health indicator, is significantly associated with objective health and quality of life (QoL) in the general population. Whether it can be considered an indicator of cognitive functioning and quality of life in the elderly is still an open issue. This study used a data-driven approach to investigate the interrelationship among SPH, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), QoL, and cognitive functioning to answer this question. The study sample included information about 12,831 people living in Italy, Spain, and Greece, extracted from the Survey on Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe, in the year 2015. The additive Ba…

Measuring dispositional optimism in patients with chronic heart failure and their healthcare providers: The validity of the Life Orientation Test-Rev…

2017

Controversy has arisen regarding the dimensionality of the LOT-R. Whereas DO was originally defined as a one-dimensional construct, empiri…

The presence of alexithymia investigated by TAS-20 in chronic urticaria patients: a preliminary report.

2006

OBJECTIVE: Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria (CIU), conventionally defined as the occurrence of widespread itchy weals lasting for at least six weeks, has a significant place among the dermatoses related to psychological factors. Emotions that cannot be expressed or elaborated, may be important in the etiology. The objective of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of patients with CIU and compare them in terms of alexithymia. METHODS: Forty consecutive subjects with chronic urticaria were recruited from an outpatient allergologic clinic. All of the subjects completed Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Rorschach Inkblot Test according with Comprehensive System modified by Maurizio Cuffaro admin…

[Access to hepatitis C treatment: a lesson for the future.]

2018

The new gene…

B cell immunosenescence in the elderly and in centenarians.

2008

The elderly suffer from an increased susceptibility to infectious disease and cancer. Aging of the immune system contributes to this state of affairs due to immunosenescence. Because repeated intermittent or chronic antigen exposure may lead to lymphocyte clonal exhaustion, chronic antigenic stress plays a part in the compromised immunity of the elderly, who have accumulated a lifetime's exposure to infectious agents, autoantigens, and cancer antigens. Literature on immunosenescence has focused mainly on T cell impairment, but B cell compartment is also affected. The age-dependent B cell changes documented by the present review indicate that advanced age per se is a condition characterized …

Aging and chronic inflammation: highlights from a multidisciplinary workshop

2023

Abstract: Aging is a gradual, continuous series of natural changes in biological, physiological, immunological, environmental, psychological, behavioral, and social processes. Aging entails changes in the immune system characterized by a decrease in thymic output of naïve lymphocytes, an accumulated chronic antigenic stress notably caused by chronic infections such as cytomegalovirus (CMV), and immune cell senescence with acquisition of an inflammatory senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). For this reason, and due to the SASP originating from other tissues, aging is commonly accompanied by low-grade chronic inflammation, termed “inflammaging”. After decades of accumulating evide…
