Theories of Intelligence in Children with Reading Disabilities: A Training Proposal

2005

A recent trend in the study of reading difficulties promotes multidimensional intervention, focusing on the reciprocal influences exerted by cognitive and emotional-motivational variables. This study evaluated improvements in reading performance as a function of metacognitive training in 36 children ( M age = 8.7 yr.) with different representations of intelligence. Posttest evaluations show significantly more improvement in reading comprehension in children with an incremental theory of intelligence. These results indicate the importance of treatment programmes that take into account both the specificity of deficits and factors relating to the domain of motivation.

Difference between Guinea Pig and Rat in the Liver Peroxisomal Response to Equivalent Plasmatic Level of Ciprofibrate

1996

Abstract Guinea pig was previously classified as a species nonresponsive to peroxisome proliferators. However, none of the previous reports was based on pharmacokinetic data. Here, after a comparative pharmacokinetic study between guinea pig and rat, we evaluate the guinea pig liver peroxisomal response to ciprofibrate, a hypolipemic agent and a potent peroxisome proliferator in rat. (1) Pharmacokinetic results show that plasmatic concentrations of ciprofibrate are equivalent in guinea pig and rat when guinea pigs are treated with ciprofibrate at 30 mg/kg twice a day and rats are treated at 3 mg/kg once a day. (2) The treatment of guinea pigs at 30 mg/kg twice a day for 2 weeks leads to a s…

Response of genetically obese Zucker rats to ciprofibrate, a hypolipidemic agent, with peroxisome proliferation activity as compared to Zucker lean a…

1993

Genetically obese Zucker (fa/fa) rats were used as an experimental model to study the effects of hypolipidemic agents on peroxisome proliferation; comparison was made with Zucker lean phenotype (Fa/-) and Sprague-Dawley strain/phenotype. The pharmacokinetics of a single administration of ciprofibrate (1 or 3 mg/kg), appeared to be similar in all strains/phenotypes. After a 2-week oral administration at the same dosages, there were dosage-related increases in hepatocellular peroxisomal yield and in the hepatic enzymes' cyanide-insensitive acyl-CoA oxidase and catalase. The peroxisomal yield was less increased in Zucker than in Sprague-Dawley rats, while the enzyme activities were similarly i…

Role of thyroid state on induction by ciprofibrate of laurate hydroxylase and peroxisomal enzymes in rat liver microsomes.

1993

The effects of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism upon liver microsomal omega-laurate hydroxylase activity (cytochrome P450 IV A1-dependent), peroxisome proliferation marker enzyme activities and acyl CoA oxidase (AOX) expression induced by ciprofibrate (2 mg/kg/day during 8 days) were studied in the male Wistar rat so as to clarify firstly the possible involvement of thyroid hormones in the modification of peroxisomal ciprofibrate-induced enzyme activities in relation to hepatic microsomal cytochrome P450 IV A1 induction, and secondly the possible direct effect of thyroid hormones on the gene expression of specific peroxisomal enzymes. No significant change was found in the ciprofibrate-in…

Delayed effects of ciprofibrate on rat liver peroxisomal properties and proto-oncogene expression.

1995

Peroxisome proliferators (PPs) are non-genotoxic carcinogens in rodents. Their reversible effects on rat liver have been studied with ciprofibrate and fenofibrate. We found that with the hypolipemic drug fenofibrate a pause of 28 days is sufficient for a return to normal status, whereas with the highly potent PP ciprofibrate, the stimulation of ACO mRNA levels remains after its withdrawal. We investigated the effects of the renewal of the treatment with PPs on other peroxisomal parameters and proto-oncogene expression using Wistar rats. Interestingly, c-myc expression was enhanced even upon drug withdrawal, and was more stimulated by the second exposure to ciprofibrate, while c-fos expressi…

Numerical simulation of linear fiction welding (LFW) processes

2011

Solid state welding processes are becoming increasingly important due to a large number of advantages related to joining ''unweldable'' materials and in particular light weight alloys. Linear friction welding (LFW) has been used successfully to bond non-axisymmetric components of a range of materials including titanium alloys, steels, aluminum alloys, nickel, copper, and also dissimilar material combinations. The technique is useful in the research of quality of the joints and in reducing costs of components and parts of the aeronautic and automotive industries.LFW involves parts to be welded through the relative reciprocating motion of two components under an axial force. In such process t…

An asymmetric electrospun membrane for the controlled release of ciprofloxacin and FGF-2: Evaluation of antimicrobial and chemoattractant properties.

2021

Here, an asymmetric double-layer membrane has been designed and fabricated by electrospinning as a tool for a potential wound healing application. A hydrophobic layer has been produced by using a polyurethane-polycaprolactone (PU-PCL) copolymer and loaded with the antibacterial ciprofloxacin whereas an ion responsive hydrophilic layer has been produced by using an octyl derivative of gellan gum (GG-C8) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and loaded with the growth factor FGF-2. This study investigated how the properties of this asymmetric membrane loaded with actives, were influenced by the ionotropic crosslinking of the hydrophilic layer. In particular, the treatment in DPBS and the crosslinking i…

Ab initio structure determination and quantitative disorder analysis on nanoparticles by electron diffraction tomography.

2017

Nanoscaled porous materials such as zeolites have attracted substantial attention in industry due to their catalytic activity, and their performance in sorption and separation processes. In order to understand the properties of such materials, current research focuses increasingly on the determination of structural features beyond the averaged crystal structure. Small particle sizes, various types of disorder and intergrown structures render the description of structures at atomic level by standard crystallographic methods difficult. This paper reports the characterization of a strongly disordered zeolite structure, using a combination of electron exit-wave reconstruction, automated diffrac…

Incorporation of an antibiotic in poly(lactic acid) and polypropylene by melt processing

2016

Purpose In this work an antibiotic, ciprofloxacin (CFX), was incorporated into 2 different polymeric matrices, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and polypropylene (PP), to provide them with antimicrobial properties. The influence of CFX content on release kinetics and on antimicrobial and mechanical properties was evaluated. Methods CFX was incorporated into both the polymers by melt mixing. Results The effect of CFX incorporation was found to strongly depend on which polymer matrix was used. In particular, the antimicrobial tests revealed that PLA samples containing CFX produced no inhibition zone and only a slight antibacterial activity was observed when the highest concentration of CFX was added t…

Uniformization of metric surfaces using isothermal coordinates

2021

We establish a uniformization result for metric surfaces - metric spaces that are topological surfaces with locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure. Using the geometric definition of quasiconformality, we show that a metric surface that can be covered by quasiconformal images of Euclidean domains is quasiconformally equivalent to a Riemannian surface. To prove this, we construct suitable isothermal coordinates.
