Phosphorylation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α in rat Fao cells and stimulation by ciprofibrate

1999

The basic mechanism(s) by which peroxisome proliferators activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) is (are) not yet fully understood. Given the diversity of peroxisome proliferators, several hypotheses of activation have been proposed. Among them is the notion that peroxisome proliferators could activate PPARs by changing their phosphorylation status. In fact, it is well known that several members of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily are regulated by phosphorylation. In this report, we show that the rat Fao hepatic-derived cell line, known to respond to peroxisome proliferators, exhibited a high content of PPARalpha. Alkaline phosphatase treatment of Fao cell lysat…

Transcriptional and post-transcriptional analysis of peroxisomal protein encoding genes from rat treated with an hypolipemic agent, ciprofibrate

1995

The treatment of rats with ciprofibrate, a potent peroxisome proliferator, led to increased levels of the peroxisomal acyl-CoA oxidase (ACO) mRNA. How ciprofibrate functions to elevate ACO mRNA is not known. To help determine the mechanism of ciprofibrate action, in vitro transcription assays were performed. It was determined that ciprofibrate was responsible for a 3.5-fold stimulation of the rate of ACO transcription within 24 hr of ingestion. It was also observed that the transcription rate stimulation following a 2-week ciprofibrate treatment of Wistar rats was maintained following 4 weeks of ciprofibrate withdrawal. Re-introduction of the drug after the 4-week pause resulted in greater …

Dielectric investigations of pure and mixed fluorocarbons in their condensed phases

1991

We review recent work and present new results on the liquid and solid fluocarbons CMF3 with M = H, F, Cl, Br, CH3, and CF3. The pure compounds as well as several series of binary mixtures were investigated using dielectric measurements. The permittivities of the non-hydrogenatcd non-polar and polar liquids could be described using the Clausius-Mosotti and the Onsager equation, respectively. In CHF3 and C2H3F3 hydrogen bridging leads to deviations from this simple behavior. The trends in the miscibility of four series of fluorocarbon mixtures are in qualitative accord with regular solution theory. The geometrical shapes of the compounds dominate the degrees of order below their melting point…

Influence of peroxisome proliferators on phosphoprotein levels in human and rat hepatic-derived cell lines.

1995

To elucidate the effect of peroxisome proliferators on the signal-transduction pathway, we have compared the effect of ciprofibrate, an hypolipaemic agent, on the overall phosphoprotein level between rat and human well differentiated hepatic derived cell lines. The phosphorylation status of several phosphoproteins in the rat Fao cell line was increased by the drug while no changes were observed in the human HepG2 cell line. In rat Fao cells, this increase, which is concentration and time dependent, can be as much as eightfold for 20-kDa and 22-kDa proteins. Wy-14,643, a non-fibrate molecule and a more potent peroxisome proliferator than ciprofibrate, increased the phosphorylation status of …

Necessary Transformation or Safe Permanence? A Philosophical Approach to the Desire for Change

2011

What is proposed is a meditation on the phrase ‘transformation of the educational system’, paying attention to the sense of the words, and showing what the desire for educational change can reveal. After explaining to what extent ‘educational system’ is a quasi-oxymoron, the meaning of ‘transformation’ has to be compared to those of revolution and utopia. The claim to be transforming the educational system is an attempt to adapt education to social and political situations and constraints. The case of the Langevin-Wallon project in France, which was never applied, helps when wondering what has to be adapted to what. What sort of reciprocity is there between school and society? The organisa…

Orbital origin and matrix element effects in the Ag/Si(111)-()R30° Fermi surface

2007

The Fermi surface (FS) of the Ag/Si(1 1 1)-3×3 reconstruction with an excess of Ag has been mapped by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy with polarized light in a wide region of the reciprocal space and with different detection geometries. In contrast to previous results, a strong polarization dependence is observed. Applying the dipole selection rules, it is found that the surface state at the Fermi level, S1 state, has odd symmetry with respect to the mirror plane of the honeycomb-chained triangle structure, indicating that it is mainly derived from Ag 5px and 5py orbitals. This conclusion is revised in the new frame of a inequivalent-triangle structure for the Ag/Si(1 1 1)-3×3 at …

Minkowskian description of polarized light and polarizers.

2002

A conventional Stokes description of polarized light is considered in a four-dimensional Lorentzian space, developing a seminal idea of Paul Soleillet [Ann. Phys. (Paris) 12, 23 (1929)]. This provides a striking interpretation for the degree of polarization and the Stokes decomposition of light beams. Malus law and reciprocity theorems for polarizers are studied using this Lorentzian formalism.

Non-equilibrium thermodynamics analysis of rotating counterflow superfluid turbulence

2010

In two previous papers two evolution equations for the vortex line density $L$, proposed by Vinen, were generalized to rotating superfluid turbulence and compared with each other. Here, the already generalized alternative Vinen equation is extended to the case in which counterflow and rotation are not collinear. Then, the obtained equation is considered from the viewpoint of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. According with this formalism, the compatibility between this evolution equation for $L$ and that one for the velocity of the superfluid component is studied. The compatibility condition requires the presence of a new term dependent on the anisotropy of the tangle, which indicates how the…

Experimental investigation of resonant activation

2000

We experimentally investigate the escape from a metastable state over a fluctuating barrier of a physical system. The system is switching between two states under electronic control of a dichotomous noise. We measure the escape time and its probability density function as a function of the correlation rate of the dichotomous noise in a frequency interval spanning more than 4 frequency decades. We observe resonant activation, namely a minimum of the average escape time as a function of the correlation rate. We detect two regimes in the study of the shape of the escape time probability distribution: (i) a regime of exponential and (ii) a regime of non-exponential probability distribution.
