Investigation of the splitting of quark and gluon jets

1998

The splitting processes in identified quark and gluon jets are investigated using longitudinal and transverse observables. The jets are selected from symmetric three-jet events measured in Z decays L with the {\sc Delphi} detector in 1991-1994. Gluon jets are identified using heavy quark anti-tagging. Scaling violations in identified gluon jets are observed for the first time. The scale energy dependence of the gluon fragmentation function is found to be about two times larger than for the corresponding quark jets, consistent with the QCD expectation $C_A/C_F$. The primary splitting of gluons and quarks into subjets agrees with fragmentation models and, for specific regions of the jet resol…

Gestión del cuerpo y planificación urbana: Desplazamiento de significado en la reivención de cuepos y ciudades

2020

Contemporary cities have administrations increasingly marked by urban planning guidelines that are guided by business and marketing and, to attract investments and tourists, implement strategies that aim to homogenize, spectacularize and control urban space. However, other experiences in the city potentially build new meaning to it, which would escape those strategically planned, creating alternative possibilities of uses, diverging from the way thar are predicted and proposed by the governmental power in their urban marketing strategies. The article discusses how the occupation of urban spaces by transvestites for prostitution may imply reflections on the role of norms of gender in the (re…

Regional deprivation and non-cancer related computed tomography use in pediatric patients in Germany: Cross-sectional analysis of cohort data.

2016

BACKGROUND: Conflicting findings were observed in recent studies assessing the association between patients' area-level socio-economic status and the received number of computed tomography (CT) examinations in children. The aim was to investigate the association between area-level socio-economic status and variation in CT examination practice for pediatric patients in Germany. METHODS: Data from Radiology Information Systems for children aged 0 to < 15 years without cancer who had at least one CT examination between 2001 and 2010 were extracted in 20 hospitals across Germany. The small-area German Index of Multiple Deprivation (GIMD) was used to assess regional deprivation. The GIMD …

Healthy design and urban planning strategies, actions, and policy to achieve salutogenic cities

2018

Starting from a previous experience carried out by the working group “Building and Environmental Hygiene” of the Italian Society of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine (SItI), the aim of the present work is to define new strategic goals for achieving a “Healthy and Salutogenic City”, which will be useful to designers, local governments and public bodies, policy makers, and all professionals working at local health agencies. Ten key points have been formulated: 1. climate change and management of adverse weather events; 2. land consumption, sprawl, and shrinking cities; 3. tactical urbanism and urban resilience; 4. urban comfort, safety, and security perception; 5. strengths and weaknesses of ur…

The embodiment of wastewater data for the estimation of illicit drug consumption in Spain

2021

Data obtained from wastewater analysis can provide rapid and complementary insights in illicit drug consumption at community level. Within Europe, Spain is an important country of transit of both cocaine and cannabis. The quantity of seized drugs and prevalence of their use rank Spain at the top of Europe. Hence, the implementation of a wastewater monitoring program at national level would help to get better understanding of spatial differences and trends in use of illicit drugs. In this study, a national wastewater campaign was performed for the first time to get more insight on the consumption of illicit drugs within Spain. The 13 Spanish cities monitored cover approximately 6 million inh…

Urban Governance in Latvia: Feeling Urban and Thinking Rural

2019

Urbanisation is affecting not only countries with high number of residents but also with small number. The aim of the research is to explore urbanisation and shrinking city tendencies in a country with small number of residents in the context of globalization and urbanisation. The “donut effect” will be explored in the capital city Riga and ten municipalities nearby. The main research question is to what extent can the classical understanding and perception of urbanisation be applied to small societies and countries, and what kind of effects does the urbanisation create in such dynamically developing countries. There are several interdependent problems, such as the new patterns of urban–rur…

European Sustainable Urbanisation through port city Regeneration - Case study Catania

2020

Analysis and assessment of a case study in small- and medium-sized port cities. The report describes the trend and proposes a solution to be applied by the Municipality of Catania. This case study has been prepared as a key input to the ESPON project ENSURE – European Sustainable Urbanisation through port city Regeneration. The study consists of three tasks: • task 1, based on statistical analysis and a survey among small and medium-sized port cities in Europe to identify the economic, social and environmental impact of port city regeneration. • task 2, based on a case study comprising four European small and medium-sized port cities of Cork (IE), Aalborg (DK), Brest (FR) and Catania (IT) w…

Comparing the morphology of urban patterns in Europe

2004

The sprawling urban patterns typical for the outskirts of many europen metropolitan areas seem to be amorphous and it is difficult to find references for describing them. However, for managing sprawl it seems important to have quantitative descriptors, which allow distinguishing different types of urban patterns and which are less ambiguous than traditional density measures. a better knowledge of these patterns should also point to the underlying context of urbanisation at their root. More concretely: to what extent are planned patterns different from less planned ones? Do planned or unplanned patterns show comparable morphological features?

Novel and known signals of selection for fat deposition in domestic sheep breeds from Africa and Eurasia

2018

International audience; Genomic regions subjected to selection frequently show signatures such as within-population reduced nucleotide diversity and outlier values of differentiation among differentially selected populations. In this study, we analyzed 50K SNP genotype data of 373 animals belonging to 23 sheep breeds of different geographic origins using the Rsb (extended haplotype homozygosity) and FST statistical approaches, to identify loci associated with the fat-tail phenotype. We also checked if these putative selection signatures overlapped with regions of high-homozygosity (ROH). The analyses identified novel signals and confirmed the presence of selection signature in genomic regio…
