Making conservation sustainable under unfavourable conditions : the case of Chimanimani National Reserve, Mozambique

2019

Based on a case study from the Chimanimani National Reserve in Mozambique, this article analyses to what extent different types of operational practices can contribute to the sustainability of protected areas in relatively unfavourable external conditions. While current conservation policies highlight community participation and market-based approaches, the same “best practices” are not equally valid under different conditions. Where unfavourable natural conditions, lack of infrastructure, difficult access and political instability limit the potential for upmarket ecotourism, actors should focus on community empowerment, diversification of livelihoods, and building joint conservation ideolo…

Współczesna hiszpańska polityka pamięci (1999-2014)

2016

W niniejszym artykule dokonana została analiza oraz próba systematyzacji współczesnej hiszpańskiej polityki pamięci. Osią aktualnych debat o przeszłości są w Hiszpanii dwa wydarzenia: hiszpańska wojna domowa (1936-1939) i dyktatura frankistowska (1936-1975). Punktem wyjścia rozważań jest teza o rozproszonym charakterze inicjatyw dążących do zdominowania polityki pamięci. Pamięć narodowa to jedynie użyteczna politycznie metafora, tymczasem w warunkach demokracji liberalnej należy raczej mówić w liczbie mnogiej: o pamięciach historycznych i politykach historycznych. Polityka pamięci jest bowiem kreowana zarówno odgórnie, przez partie polityczne za pomocą instytucji politycznych, jak i oddolni…

Civil society participation in international decision making: recent developments and future perspectives in the indigenous rights arena

2012

This article focuses on key issues and recent developments concerning indigenous peoples' involvement in international decision making affecting their rights and interests. Based on a human rights-based approach to participation, it suggests that while a number of positive steps have been taken to allow indigenous peoples the possibility to take part to, and influence, relevant intergovernmental decision-making processes, there's a need to provide their own self-governing institutions and organisations with a more influential status than that granted to civil society organisations (CSOs) generally, whereby they can exercise different levels of participatory rights, depending upon the nature…

Empowering New Agents of Civil Society or Fostering Good Citizens? Framing Youth Participation in Finnish Youth Organizations

2018

ABSTRACTThis article investigates how nationwide Finnish youth civil society organizations frame their approaches to youth participation. By analyzing data from interviews, websites, and annual reports, five frames are identified. The frames differ in how they define the purpose of participation, whom they see as the main actors, and what kind of member, volunteer, or other participant roles they provide to young people. Three frames are used as master frames that see young people as agents, learners, or targets of support; two subordinate frames expand the scopes of the organizations. Only some of the frames include any concept of integrating young people into the civil society.

Coordinate Globally, Serve Locally

2020

What would a desirable and viable global organization of progressive movements look like in the context of the historical conjuncture of crises-ridden capitalism? I propose here a reorientation of progressive politics that are attuned to both the fundamentals of structural change and the basic daily needs of human beings. nonPeerReviewed
