Dysregulations concerning the composition and function of regulatory T cells (T(regs)) are assumed to be involved in the pathophysiology of complicated pregnancies. Preeclampsia is a pregnancy disorder of unknown origin, characterized by vasospasm, elevated blood pressure, and increased neuromuscular irritability, features common to syndromes of magnesium deficiency. Evidence of serum and ionized magnesium metabolism disturbances have been observed in women with preeclampsia. This and the therapeutic utility of magnesium in preeclampsia led us to investigate the extent to which an endogenous tissue magnesium deficiency might be present in and contribute to its pathophysiology. Increased neurogenesis has been reported in neurodegenerative disease, but its significance is unclear. In a mouse model of prion disease, Gomez-Nicola et al. detect increased neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus that partially counteracts neuronal loss. Targeting neurogenesis may have therapeutic potential.

Radiant heat is often used to study nociception in vivo. We now used infrared radiation generated by a diode laser stimulator (wavelength 980 nm) to investigate transduction mechanisms for noxious heat stimuli in acutely dissociated dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons of rats in vitro. The laser stimulator offered the unique opportunity to test whether the same stimuli also elicit pain sensations in humans. The aim of this research was the evaluation of polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) membrane fluidity in subjects with insulin resistance. Insulin sensitivity, in fact, may be influenced by plasma membrane fluidity. We enrolled 19 subjects with insulin resistance previously demonstrated during an euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp. PMN membrane fluidity was studied by labeling intact cells with the fluorescent probe 1-[4-(trimethylamino)phenyl]-6-phenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene and calculating the fluorescence polarization degree. Stereotactic biopsies guided by an optical navigation system: technique and clinical experience.

Frame-based stereotactic biopsies are time-consuming procedures making necessary head fixation in a ring, explicit coordinate calculation and setting of the parameters. Frameless systems make many of these intermediate steps unnecessary, impose less mechanical restrictions regarding access to the lesions, and with slight modifications can be used to perform stereotactic biopsies. A special adaptation designed to fix the holder and the biopsy instrument is described. The neuronavigation optical tracking system of Radionics was used. CT scans were performed with 6 skin markers. The aims of this workshop on pre-eclampsia were two-fold. The first half aimed to provide an update on the influence of oxygen and oxidative stress on the development of preeclampsia. The session, with four speakers, was chaired by Fiona Lyall. The second part of the workshop was more clinically orientated addressing new patho-physiological and clinical findings. This session also had four speakers and was chaired by Rudi Seufert.
