A Catalyst Designed for the Enantioselective Construction of Methyl- and Alkyl-Substituted Tertiary Stereocenters

2015

Tertiary methyl-substituted stereocenters are present in numerous biologically active natural products. Reported herein is a catalytic enantioselective method for accessing these chiral building blocks using the Mukaiyama-Michael reaction between silyl ketene thioacetals and acrolein. To enable remote enantioface control on the nucleophile, a new iminium catalyst, optimized by three-parameter tuning and by identifying substituent effects on enantioselectivity, was designed. The catalytic process allows rapid access to chiral thioesters, amides, aldehydes, and ketones bearing an α-methyl stereocenter with excellent enantioselectivities, and allowed rapid access to the C4-C13 segment of (-)-b…

“Natural wages dynamics in a Ricardian growth model”

2006

Ricardian growth models are generally built on the assumption of a constant natural wage. Such an assumption conceals the fact that classical economists were aware that in growing economies workers' normal pattern of consumption steadily rise both in terms of quantity and quality. In the first part of the chapter we gather some classical hints on the relationship between economic growth and natural wages in order to provide a rational reconstruction of the classical point of view on natural wage dynamics. In the second part of the chapter we propose a formal analysis of the dynamics of a Ricardian model with endogenous natural wage

Negative emotional state slows down movement speed : behavioral and neural evidence

2019

Background Athletic performance is affected by emotional state. Athletes may underperform in competition due to poor emotion regulation. Movement speed plays an important role in many competition events. Flexible control of movement speed is critical for effective athletic performance. Although behavioral evidence showed that negative emotion can influence movement speed, the nature of the relationship remains controversial. Thus, the present study investigated how negative emotion affects movement speed and the neural mechanism underlying the interaction between emotion processing and movement control. Methods The present study combined electroencephalography (EEG) technology with a cued-…

Mechanisms of cell death in canine parvovirus-infected cells provide intuitive insights to developing nanotools for medicine

2010

Jonna Nykky, Jenni E Tuusa, Sanna Kirjavainen, Matti Vuento, Leona GilbertNanoscience Center and Department of Biological and Environmental Science, University of Jyväskylä, FinlandAbstract: Viruses have great potential as nanotools in medicine for gene transfer, targeted gene delivery, and oncolytic cancer virotherapy. Here we have studied cell death mechanisms of canine parvovirus (CPV) to increase the knowledge on the CPV life cycle in order to facilitate the development of better parvovirus vectors. Morphological studies of CPV-infected Norden laboratory feline kidney (NLFK) cells and canine fibroma cells (A72) displayed characteristic apoptotic events. Apoptosis was f…

Alessandro Emmanuele Marvuglia (1771-1845)

2007

A "laboratory" open air in the urban landscape of Palermo

2012

The study intends to make new contributions to knowledge of a interesting "laboratory" in the open air in the urban landscape of Palermo, a cultural and scientific heritage in which architecture, art and decoration coexist in an experiment of collective synergies. The Botanical Garden C enter, with its ten acres of land appears, still, a fervent creative process between artifice and nature, the expression of a specific historical and cultural climate in which expectations converged of a intellectual, scientific and institutional fervor. The academic institution, founded in 1789 with the intention of cultivating useful plants to the arts, crafts and medicine, contributed to the spread of tro…

Stick around: Cell–Cell Adhesion Molecules during Neocortical Development

2021

The neocortex is an exquisitely organized structure achieved through complex cellular processes from the generation of neural cells to their integration into cortical circuits after complex migration processes. During this long journey, neural cells need to establish and release adhesive interactions through cell surface receptors known as cell adhesion molecules (CAMs). Several types of CAMs have been described regulating different aspects of neurodevelopment. Whereas some of them mediate interactions with the extracellular matrix, others allow contact with additional cells. In this review, we will focus on the role of two important families of cell–cell adhesion molecules (C-CAMs), classi…

GW170817: Observation of Gravitational Waves from a Binary Neutron Star Inspiral

2017

On August 17, 2017 at 12-41:04 UTC the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave detectors made their first observation of a binary neutron star inspiral. The signal, GW170817, was detected with a combined signal-to-noise ratio of 32.4 and a false-alarm-rate estimate of less than one per 8.0×104 years. We infer the component masses of the binary to be between 0.86 and 2.26 M, in agreement with masses of known neutron stars. Restricting the component spins to the range inferred in binary neutron stars, we find the component masses to be in the range 1.17-1.60 M, with the total mass of the system 2.74-0.01+0.04M. The source was localized within a sky region of 28 deg2 (90% probabili…
