2022

La Carestia of the Sicilian poet Domenico Tempio is an allegorical satirical poem that fits into the tradition of southern enlightened reformism, feeding the utopia of peace and social egalitarianism. The article analyzes some frame of the work to grasp the thrust for the renewal of eighteenth-century poetry, through a stylistic use of the poetic language that oscillates between coloriture markedly expressionist and equally visible traces of formal classicism.

2019

This article analyses the impact of classical tradition on the artistic production of Gregorio Prieto (1897-1992), painter par excellence of the Generation of 1927. It will be discovered how this influence, far from becoming a conservative reference, would constitute an incentive for his entailment with the avant-garde, especially with surrealism. Although the classic trace is found with more intensity in the creations produced during his Roman years, between 1928 and 1929, when he also made important trips to Sicily and Greece, Greece and Rome would nevertheless continue to be constitutive of his aesthetic experience throughout his later and extensive career.

The Romantics of 1909: Arthur Symons, Pierre Lasserre and T. E. Hulme

2016

Arthur Symons’s The Romantic Movement in English Poetry (1909) has elicited scant discussion. Part dictionary of British authors born before 1800, part series of portraits of canonical Romantic poets, The Romantic Movement remains perplexing with its unclear purpose and ungainly format. This article argues that Symons’s monograph should be approached in the turn of the century debate on the definition and value of British Romanticism. As opposed to T. E. Hulme’s ‘Romanticism and Classicism’ (1912?), itself indebted to Pierre Lasserre’s Le Romantisme français. Essai sur la révolution dans les sentiments et dans les idées au XIXe siècle (1907), Symons’s study appears as a defence of the roman…

Personifikacja a cud w polskiej teorii epopei lat porozbiorowych

2023

In Romanticism, the employment of abstract concepts within an epic ‘miracle machine’ was arranged by means of personification. This was the case until Antoni Malczewski, a Polish Romantic poet, introduced free indirect speech which facilitated linking anthropomorphised abstractions with their ‘genetic subjects,’ i.e. experiencing characters. The ‘miracle machine,’ by definition, was intended to be a response to a changeable vision of the world determined by history. Yet, what can be observed in poems of the late eighteen and early nineteenth century is, though with varying intensity, the presence of mythological characters along with Christian supernatural creatures, natural phenomena as we…
