Predicting the landslides triggered by the 2009 96E/Ida tropical storms in the Ilopango caldera area (El Salvador, CA): optimizing MARS-based model b…

2019

The main topic of this research was to evaluate the effect in the performance of stochastic landslide susceptibility models, produced by differences between the triggering events of the calibration and validation datasets. In the Caldera Ilopango area (El Salvador), MARS (multivariate adaptive regression splines)-based susceptibility modeling was applied using a set of physical–environmental predictors and two remotely recognized landslide inventories: one dated at 2003 (1503 landslides), which was the result of a normal rainfall season, and one which was produced by the combined effect of the Ida hurricane and the 96E tropical depression in 2009 (2237 landslides). Both the event inventorie…

Marqueurs d'une structuration extensive jurassique en arrière de la marge nord-téthysienne (monts du Mâconnais, Bourgogne, France)

2000

Structural analysis of extensional faults in the Mâconnais Hills shows that low-intensity extensional phenomena occurred back from the passive margin of the Ligurian Tethys, the axis of which lay some 400 km southeast of the study area in Mid-Jurassic times. Storm-induced rip current directions and coral lens positions suggest that the palaeotopography was maintained by early faulting.

Tectono-sedimentary constraints to the Oligocene-to-Miocene evolution of the Peloritani thrust belt (NE Sicily)

1999

Abstract The Peloritani thrust belt belongs to the southern sector of the Calabrian Arc and is formed by a set of south-verging tectonic units, including crystalline basement and sedimentary cover (from the top: Aspromonte U.; Mela U.; Mandanici U.; Fondachelli U.; Longi-Taormina U.), piled up starting from Late Oligocene. At least two main terrigenous clastic formations lie with complicated relationships on top of the previous units: the Frazzano Fm (Oligocene) and the Stilo-Capo d'Orlando Fm (Late Oligocene?–Early Miocene), as syn-to-post-tectonic deposits. These clastic deposits have different characteristics, in space and time, representing or flysch-like sequences involved in several t…

Sicilian Lithostratigraphic Units

2018

This chapter includes the description of the Sicilian lithostratigraphic units (Fig. 2.1). They are grouped in a generally chronological order and the complete list of the worksheets is shown in the Table of contents. In each chronologic group the worksheets of the described formations are organized in alphabetic order. The Permo-Triassic units are the oldest deposits outcropping in Sicily that originated during the early stages of the Southern Tethyan continental rifting. The Meso-Cenozoic carbonate units represent the sedimentary sequences of the various stratigraphic successions differentiated in the field along the Sicilian outcrops. The deposits of the Sicilide Complex (Tethyan units) …

Palynology and lithostratigraphy of Late Elsterian to Early Saalian aquatic sediments in the Ziemupe–Jūrkalne area, western Latvia

2000

Abstract This study is based upon lithological and palynological investigation of test-drilling cores along the Baltic Sea coast. Three intertill units of basin sediments are underlain by a thin layer of Lētiža (Elsterian) till and overlain by glaciotectonically deformed Kurzeme (Saalian Complex) till. The Kurzeme till differs from the Lētiža till by higher contents of limestone clasts and rounded hornblende grains. The lowermost intertill unit consists of glaciolacustrine to glaciomarine laminated clay of the Sudrabi member, a late glacial deposit of the Lētiža glaciation. Treeless vegetation covered the adjoining land. Next is the marine to brackish Akme n rags formation, deposited during…

Organics versus clastics: conditions necessary for peat (coal) development

1990

Abstract The absence or lack of detrital influx into ancient peat-forming swamps is critical to the formation of low-ash coal. Modern and ancient coal-forming swamps of continental basins show a separation of peat and clastic sediments which is partially fault controlled. In the African rift valleys as well as in the Stephanian intermontane coal basins of France, thick peat free from clastic input may be the result of tectonic activity. In the paralic basins of Morocco (Westphalian B) and Nigeria (Late Cretaceous) coal occur landward of the shoreline turnaround and are related to a relative high stand of the sea, which curtailed detrital influx into the basins. Thus, peat formation occurred…

Geochemical constraints on the provenance and depositional setting of sedimentary rocks from the islands of Chios, Inousses and Psara, Aegean Sea, Gr…

2007

The provenance and depositional setting of Late Palaeozoic and Early Mesozoic clastic sediments from the eastern Aegean archipelago are examined here for the first time using whole-rock geochemistry and composition of detrital chrome spinel. Major- and trace-element data for Late Palaeozoic and Permo-Triassic clastic sediments from the Lower and Upper Units of Chios are compatible with an acidic to intermediate source, minor input of (ultra)mafic detritus and recycling of older sedimentary components. Chondrite-normalized REE profiles are uniform with light REE enrichments (La N /Yb N c . 7.7), negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* c . 0.67) and flat heavy REE patterns (Gd N /Yb N c . 1.5), indicat…

Petrogenesis of tourmaline rocks associated with Fe-carbonate-graphite metapelite, metabasite and strata-bound polymetallic sulphide mineralisation, …

2007

Abstract Tourmalinite and tourmaline-rich rocks associated with Fe-carbonate–graphite phyllite, strata-bound polymetallic sulphide deposits, metabasite and marble were studied, for information on the mechanism of tourmaline formation in the pre-Hercynian low-grade metamorphic sequence of the Mandanici Unit in the Peloritani Mountains of Sicily, southern Italy. The major and trace element compositions of the tourmaline rocks suggest the existence of a sedimentary protolith with pre-metamorphic black shale and bedded chert. Boron was interpreted to be accumulated in a restricted sedimentary basin, between platform carbonate formations, with abundant organic matter and Fe–Al–Ti-rich laterite–b…
