Orthodontic treatment need in Spanish schoolchildren: an epidemiological study using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need

2008

SUMMARY The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment need in 12- to 16-year-old Spanish schoolchildren using the aesthetic component (AC) and Dental Health Component (DHC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and to analyse the relationship with gender and age. The study followed the World Health Organization recommendations for oral health surveys. The sample comprised 655 schoolchildren (306 males and 349 females) who had not undergone orthodontic treatment, divided into two groups: 363 12-year-olds and 292 15- to 16-yearolds, out of a representative sample of the school population of the Valencian Community. The IOTN results…

Alveolar graft in the cleft lip and palate patient: Review of 104 cases

2014

Introduction: Alveolar bone grafting is a vital part of the rehabilitation of cleft patients. The factors that have been most frequently associated with the success of the graft are the age at grafting and the pre-grafting orthodontic treatment. Objectives: 1) Describe the cases of alveolar bone grafts performed at the Maxilofacial Unit of Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, Barcelona (HSJD); and 2) Analyze the success/failure of alveolar grafts and related variables. Material and Methods: Descriptive retrospective study using a sample of 104 patients who underwent a secondary alveolar graft at the Craniofacial Unit of HSJD between 1998 and 2012. The graft was done by the same surgeon in all patient…

Repair of complete bilateral cleft lip with severely protruding premaxilla performing a premaxillary setback and vomerine ostectomy in one stage surg…

2015

Background: The authors present a technique for selected cases of CBCL. The primary repair of the CBCL with a severely protruding premaxilla in one stage surgery is very difficult, essentially because a good muscular apposition is difficult, forcing synchronously to do a premaxillary setback to facilitate subsequent bilateral lip repair and, thus, achieving satisfactory results. We achieve this by a reductive ostectomy on the vomero- premaxillary suture. Material and Methods: 4 patients with CBCL and severely protruding premaxilla underwent premaxillary setback by vomerine ostectomy at the same time of lip repair in the past 24 months. The extent of premaxillary setback varied between 9 and…

Bleeding prophylaxis in a child with cleft palate and factor VII deficiency: a case report.

2006

Bleeding prophylaxis in a child with cleft palate and factor VII deficiency: a case report. Pirrello R, Siragusa S, Giambona C, D'Arpa S, Cordova A, Moschella F. Source Dipartimento di Discipline Chirurgiche ed Oncologiche, Sezione di Chirurgia Plastica e Ricostruttiva, Università di Palermo, Palermo, Italy. Abstract The association between factor VII deficiency and cleft palate has never been described. The case of a child with cleft palate and factor VII deficiency who successfully underwent palatoplasty is described in this article. To allow surgical treatment, through maintenance of a normal prothrombin time, the patient was given 15 microg/kg of recombinant factor VIIa every 12 hours, …

Identification of susceptibility genes in non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate using whole-exome sequencing

2015

Background Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) is among the most common congenital malformations. The etiology of NSCL/P remains poorly characterized owing to its complex genetic heterogeneity. The objective of this study was to identify genetic variants that increase susceptibility to NSCL/P. Material and Methods Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed in 8 fetuses with NSCL/P in China. Bioinformatics analysis was performed using commercially available software. Variants detected by WES were validated by Sanger sequencing. Results By filtering out synonymous variants in exons, we identified average 8575 nonsynonymous single nucleotide variants (SNVs). We subseq…

Congenital lower lip pits : Van der Woude syndrome

2018

The Van der Woude syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant development malformation characterized by a paramedian lip pits and /or sinuses or conical elevation of lower lip associated with cleft lip and or palate. These congenital lip pits usually appear clinically in the vermilion border of lip, with or without secretion. The critical region of VWS has been identified to be at Iq32 to 41 with high, but incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity. Therapeutic intervention is generally required for cosmetic reason or when recurrent inflammation is present. Dental surgeon should be aware of this syndrome, as it is associated with variety of other congenital malformation. van der woude syndro…

Oral, facial, digital, vertebral anomalies with psychomotor delay: a mild form of OFD type Gabrielli?

2002

A girl with oral, facial, and digital anomalies presented at birth with a large cleft palate filled by a nasopharyngeal mass and was found later to have several vertebral anomalies and mental retardation. A similar phenotype has been previously reported in a sporadic male patient [Gabrielli et al., 1994: Am J Med Genet 53:290-293], suggesting a new variant form of oral-facial-digital syndrome.

Orofacial features and medical profile of eight individuals with Kabuki syndrome

2019

Background To evaluate oral, craniofacial and systemic characteristics of eight patients with Kabuki syndrome (KS), aged between 3 and 16 years old. Material and Methods In this retrospective study, medical records of all patients were reviewed for information on family history, growth and development, medications in use, general systemic complications and oral and craniofacial characteristics. Results The medical alterations found included recurrent infections such as pneumonia and otitis media (n = 6), cardiovascular malformations (n = 4), kidney abnormalities (n = 2), epilepsy (n = 2) and visual deficiency (n = 2). The individuals exhibited dental caries (n = 5), agenesis (n = 5), delaye…

CLEFT PALATE ONLY: CURRENT CONCEPTS

2017

Cleft palate only (CPO) is one of the most common congenital malformations worldwide. The etiopathogenesis of CPO is not completely understood. Environmental factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, intake of drugs during pregnancy, advanced paternal age, have been demonstrated to be a risk of CPO, but conflicting results have also been published. Insufficient intake of folic acid during the pregnancy has been suggested to increase the risk for CPO. The demonstrated risk for siblings and the higher risk for monozygotic twins suggest a genetic etiopathogenesis for CPO. In some cases of CPO a prevalent mode of inheritance has been reported, but oligogenic models with reduced penetrance,…
