Two Types of pseudo-clefts?
2010
Sentences such as 'What Fred does is complain' and 'What Fred does is important' have both been labeled as pseudo-clefts, though of two distinct types. We provide four tests to structurally distinguish such constructions. Entailment patterns and a number of structural ties between the post-copular constituent and specific constituents of the pre-copular relative clause suggest using the label ‘pseudo-cleft’ for the former type only. This paper also examines certain cases of pseudo-clefts with no simple correlates, and vice versa, to argue – contra Higgins 1973 – that these do not necessarily contradict the existence of a structural connection (a transformation, in the sense of Z. S. Harris)…
Predictive validity of the GOSLON Yardstick index in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate: A systematic review
2017
Among the various indices developed for measuring the results of treatment in patients born with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), the GOSLON Yardstick index is the most widely used to assess the efficacy of treatment and treatment outcomes, which in UCLP cases are closely linked to jaw growth. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review to validate the predictability of growth using the GOSLON Yardstick in patients born with UCLP. A systematic literature review was conducted in four Internet databases: Medline, Cochrane Library, Scopus and Embase, complemented by a manual search and a further search in the databases of the leading journals that focus on this topic. An el…
Presurgical Preparation of Infants With Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate: The SAC-PP-MR Innovative Technique
2018
In this article, we demonstrate an effective, cheap, and fast way to shape the nasal alar cartilage in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. This technique straightens the vomer and brings the philtrum, columella, premaxilla, and the maxillary frenum to the midsagittal plane, while the alveolar ridges are shaped and positioned. This reduces the lip and palatal cleft to zero even in a 4-week period.
Shape matching, shape retrieval
2016
This thesis concerns shape matching and shape retrieval. It describes four contributions to thisdomain. The first is an improvement of the k-means method, in order to find the best partition ofvoxels inside a given shape ; these best partitions permit to match shapes using an optimal matchingin a bipartite graph. The second contribution is the fusion of two descriptors, one local, the otherglobal, with the product rule. The third contribution considers the complete graph, the vertices ofwhich are the shapes in the database and the query. Edges are labelled with several distances, one per descriptor. Then the method computes, with linear programming, the convex combinationof distances which m…
3D shape recognition and matching for intelligent computer vision systems
2018
This thesis concerns recognition and matching of 3D shapes for intelligent computer vision systems. It describes two main contributions to this domain. The first contribution is an implementation of a new shape descriptor built on the basis of the spectral geometry of the Laplace-Beltrami operator; we propose an Advanced Global Point Signature (AGPS). This descriptor exploits the intrinsic structure of the object and organizes its information in an efficient way. In addition, AGPS is extremely compact since only a few eigenpairs were necessary to obtain an accurate shape description. The second contribution is an improvement of the wave kernel signature; we propose an optimized wave kernel …
Contribution of polymorphisms in genes associated with craniofacial development to the risk of nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or palate in the Brazilian …
2012
Background and Objective: Nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or palate (NSCL/P) is a complex disease associated with both genetic and environmental factors. One strategy for identifying of possible NSCL/P genetic causes is to evaluate polymorphic variants in genes involved in the craniofacial development. Design: We carried out a case-control analysis of 13 single nucleotide polymorphisms in 9 genes related to craniofacial development, including TBX1, PVRL1, MID1, RUNX2, TP63, TGFB3, MSX1, MYH9 and JAG2 , in 367 patients with NSCL/P and 413 unaffected controls from Brazil to determine their association with NSCL/P. Results: Four out of 13 polymorphisms (rs28649236 and rs4819522 of TBX1, rs7940667 o…
Imaging synaptic zinc release in living nervous tissue
2001
Zinc enriched neurons have a pool of synaptic vesicles which contain free or loosely-bound zinc ions. The movement of the vesicular zinc ions into the synaptic clefts has been previously studied by microdialysis, fluorescence postmortem staining for zinc and radioactive zinc isotope. In this study the zinc fluorescence probe N-6-metoxy-p-toluensulfonamide quinoline (TSQ) has been applied as a tracer of synaptic release of zinc ions. This fluorochrome permeates cell membranes and when exposed to living brain slices gives rise to a staining pattern similar to that seen with autometallography. In the living brain slices, fluorescence emission persists after exposure to calcium saturated ethyle…
Linked data vocabularies for BIM
2019
Given the high interest in the field of BIM (Building Information Modeling) for Linked Data approaches over the last years, the article at hand presents an evaluation of the main Linked Data vocabularies available for the considered domain. First, Semantic Web layer architecture is presented, along with the 4 main principles of Linked Data. Second, each vocabulary is evaluated according to these 4 principles, while 2 additional ones are added in order to assess the licence associated with the vocabulary (open or not, specified or missing). An overall comparison among the considered vocabularies is also provided, thus helping in choosing which vocabulary to use in future Linked Data applicat…
