Business choices, risk management and distortions in the wine market in the European Union

2020

The objective of this work is to analyze the management of technical and economic risks in agri-food production. It is well established that any business activity is characterized by risks that, if not managed efficiently and effectively, can cause a company’s downward spiral. In this context, the management of a winery requires the adoption of company policies aimed at reducing risk. This study highlights the fact that the wine insurance market is characterized by information asymmetry and adverse selection that contribute to the creation of ‘distorted markets’. The results of the empirical analysis show the collapse of subsidized insurance contracts in viticulture leading to a decrease in…

CREATING A POSITIVE WORKING ENVIRONMENT FOR TEACHERS

2018

The purpose of the research paper is to study a positive working environment importance for teachers work satisfaction and the role of principal in improving working conditions. Whereas teacher profession is subject to different changes and reforms it makes the whole profession and teacher well-being an important subject to discuss. The research paper includes analysis of the theoretical material about physical environment as well as psychological (also called microclimate). Empirical part is based on teacher’s survey – 97 teachers from different schools in Riga were involved. The statements of survey have partially adopted from Teaching and Learning International Study TALIS 2013. The main …

Modeling an X-ray Flare on Proxima Centauri: evidence of two flaring loop components and of two heating mechanisms at work

2003

We model in detail a flare observed on Proxima Centauri with the EPIC-PN on board XMM-Newton at high statistics and high time resolution and coverage. Time-dependent hydrodynamic loop modeling is used to describe the rise and peak of the light curve, and a large fraction of the decay, including its change of slope and a secondary maximum, over a duration of more than 2 hours. The light curve, the emission measure and the temperature derived from the data allow us to constrain the loop morphology and the heating function and to show that this flare can be described with two components: a major one triggered by an intense heat pulse injected in a single flaring loop with half-length ~1.0 10^{…

Determination of water intrusion heat in hydrophobic microporous materials by high pressure calorimetry

2010

International audience; The understanding of interactions between a solid surface and a non-wetting liquid still remains of fundamental interest in numerous research fields, from chemistry to biology. This work focuses on the mechanisms of water intrusion in hydrophobic microporous materials through the thermal analysis of the phenomenon. A specific calorimetric technique coupled to high pressure equipment has been developed to investigate equilibrium thermal effects in such thermodynamic systems from 0 to 400 MPa under isothermal conditions. First validation tests of this method were carried out by compressing degassed water in a constant volume V with successive small pressure increments …

Evaluating Thermal Corrections for Adsorption Processes at the Metal/Gas Interface

2019

International audience; Adsorption and desorption steps are key for active catalysts and rely on a subtle balance between enthalpic and entropic terms. While the enthalpic term is becoming ever more accurate through density functional development, the entropic term remains underrated and its precise determination a great challenge. In this work, we have performed extensive first principles thermodynamic integration (TI) simulations for the 1 adsorption of small (e.g., CO) to larger (e.g., phenol) molecules at metallic surfaces and compared their adsorption free energies to the values obtained by vertical, static statistical mechanics approximations to thermal corrections invoking three diff…

Social comparisons at work as related to a cooperative social climate and to individual differences in social comparison orientation

2005

This study examined the frequency of social comparisons in a work setting, and the feelings that these comparisons evoked. These processes were related to individual differences in social comparison orientation, and to the perception of a cooperative social climate at work. The participants were 216 physicians from various health centers in the Community of Valencia in Spain. In general, upward comparisons occurred more often, and elicited more positive and less negative affect than downward comparisons. Those high in social comparison orientation reported relatively more upward as well as downward comparisons, more positive affect after downward comparisons, and more negative affect after …

Evaluation of the Effects of a Bullying at Work Intervention for Middle Managers.

2020

The aim of the study is to evaluate the effects of a workplace bullying intervention based on the training of middle managers regarding bullying awareness, the consequences of bullying, strategies in conflict resolution and mediation/negotiation abilities. Overall, 142 randomly selected middle managers participated in the study. First, participants completed an information record and two scales assessing bullying strategies, role conflict and role ambiguity. The last two scales were completed again in a second phase three months after the intervention had finished. The intervention produced a decrease in the following bullying strategies: effects on self-expression and communication, effect…

Psychosocial safety climate (PSC) and enacted PSC for workplace bullying and psychological health problem reduction

2017

Bullying at work has profound effects on both the individual and organization. We aimed to determine if organizational psychosocial safety climate (PSC; a climate specific to worker psychological health) could reduce workplace bullying and associated psychological health problems (i.e., distress, emotional exhaustion, depression) if specific procedures were implemented (PSC enactment). We theorized that the PSC enactment mechanism works via psychosocial processes such as bullying mistreatment climate (anti-bullying procedures), work design (procedures reduce stress through work redesign), and conflict resolution (procedures to resolve conflict). We used two-wave national longitudinal interv…
