Hydration shells around ions are crucial for many fundamental biological and chemical processes. Their local physicochemical properties are quite different from those of bulk water and hard to probe experimentally. We address this problem by combining soft X-ray spectroscopy using a liquid jet and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations together with ab initio electronic structure calculations to elucidate the water–ion interaction in a MgCl2 solution at the molecular level. Abstract. Based on the results of a pilot study in 2007, which found high mixing ratios of molecular iodine (I2) above the intertidal macroalgae (seaweed) beds at Mweenish Bay (Ireland), we extended the study to nine different locations in the vicinity of Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station on the west coast of Ireland during a field campaign in 2009. The mean values of I2 mixing ratio found above the macroalgae beds at nine different locations ranged from 104 to 393 ppt, implying a high source strength of I2. This paper explores climate change adaptation within national policy priorities in a least developed country (LDC). The premise of the article is that when considering food security, climate is an exogenous trigger, while the deeper causes lie in social problems. Therefore, adaptation is subordinate to poverty alleviation. The paper examines how these two goals, climate adaptation and poverty alleviation, can be combined. [EN] Mixed oxides derived from layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been investigated as potential catalysts for the NOx removal at high temperatures. The best results were obtained with Co–Al mixed oxides derived from LDHs that are active at 750 ◦C in the presence of oxygen and water. These catalysts could reduce or/and decompose the NOx formed in the dense phase of the FCC regenerator, being deactivated at oxygen concentrations higher than 1.5%. Nevertheless this deactivation is not permanent and they would be regenerated after reduction with hydrogen at 530 ◦C. [Context] Despite the fact that many sulfur-bearing molecules, ranging from simple diatomic species up to astronomical complex molecules, have been detected in the interstellar medium, the sulfur chemistry in space is largely unknown and a depletion in the abundance of S-containing species has been observed in the cold, dense interstellar medium. The chemical form of the missing sulfur has yet to be identified.

O'Dowd et al. reply - McFiggans raises some interesting, but partly speculative, issues about the possibility of additional condensable-iodine-vapour (CIV) precursors being involved in marine aerosol formation from biogenic iodine emissions, and about the relative roles of iodine oxide and sulphuric acid in the marine new-particle formation process.
