Quantitative determinations of the human serum albumin level showed significantly higher values in tropical (Negroes 46.98 mg/ml, Indians 54.30 mg/ml) than in non-tropical populations (Germans 44.41 mg/ml). These observations are in agreement with those of several other authors. It is assumed that these variations in the serum albumin level are related to climate, and that they may indicate some biological advantage of higher albumin levels under the climatic conditions of tropical biotops. This hypothesis is discussed considering several aspects.

Context: Warming up in very cold climates and maintaining an elevated body temperature prior to a race is challenging for snow-sport athletes. Purpose: To investigate the effects of active (ACT), passive (PAS), and a combination of ACT and PAS (COM) warm-ups on maximal physical performance in a subzero environment among snow-sport athletes. Methods: Ten junior alpine skiers completed 3 experimental trials in −7.2 (0.2)°C. International audience; Absorption spectra of the infrared ν3 and ν4 bands of CH4 perturbed by N2 over large ranges of pressure and temperature have been measured in the laboratory. A theoretical approach accounting for line mixing is proposed to (successfully) model these experiments. It is similar to that of Pieroni et al. [J Chem Phys 1999;110:7717–32] and is based on state-to-state rotational cross-sections calculated with a semi-classical approach and a few empirical parameters.
