Learning influence on the behavioral structure of rat response to pain in hot-plate

2011

Aim of the research was to study, by means of descriptive and multivariate analyses, whether, and how, learning influences the behavioral structure of rat response to pain. To this purpose, a hot-plate test daily repetition procedure was carried out on male Wistar rats for five days. A 6-day interval without stimulation elapsed before last test was carried out on day 12. After composition of an ethogram, descriptive (number, latency, per cent distribution) and multivariate analyses (cluster, stochastic) were carried out for each scheduled test day. One-way ANOVA and Newman-Keuls post-hoc test for multiple comparisons revealed significant changes for climbing, jumping, front-paw licking and …

Comparison of actual and imagined execution of whole-body movements after a long exposure to microgravity

2003

Five cosmonauts were tested 30 days before a six-month space flight and also on the 2nd and the 6th day after their return to Earth. Cosmonauts performed and imagined a task that involved climbing two stairs to step onto a platform, jumping down with both feet and walking normally for a distance of 4 m. Durations of actual and imagined movements were measured by an electronic stopwatch. Results indicated that cosmonauts performed actual and imagined movements with similar durations before and after the space flight. However, the 2nd day after their return to Earth, cosmonauts significantly increased the durations of both actual and imagined movements. The durations of the imagined and actua…

Assessment of impairments that limit exercise and use of impairment information to generate an exercise.

2007

Prescribing the correct exercise program is a challenge for older adults with multiple physiological impairments. The authors evaluated an assessment instrument that incorporates results of multiple categories of impairment, including strength, balance, gait, vision, and cognitive function. The physical therapist made judgments on the relative impact of 9 different impairments on specific exercises and on the total impact of all impairments on particular exercises. In a cohort age 75–85 y, functional limitations, impaired balance, pain, and low physical endurance were estimated to have the largest impact on the ability to carry out exercise activities, primarily walking, stair climbing, bal…

Structure of rat behavior in hole-board: II) multivariate analysis of modifications induced by diazepam.

2009

In our previous study we suggested that multivariate analysis could improve hole-board test reliability providing a more useful tool to determine behavioral effects of anxiolytic drugs. To support this hypothesis, a multivariate analysis of rat behavior in hole-board, following administration of the reference anxiolytic drug diazepam, was carried out. Four groups, each composed of thirty male Wistar rats, were used: one saline and three diazepam injected (0.25, 0.5 and 2 mg/kg IP). Rat behavior was recorded for 10 min through a digital videocamera. Descriptive and multivariate analyses were carried out. In all groups, more than 80% of whole behavioral structure encompassed walking, climbing…

Structural analysis of rat patellar tendon in response resistance and endurance training.

2009

Little is known about tendon adaptations induced by mechanical loading. Our goal was to evaluate the effects of two different exercise training protocols on adult rat patellar tendon. Ninety-six male Wistar rats were divided into a sedentary group (control), a resistance-trained group and an endurance-trained group. The examinations were performed after 15, 30 and 45 days of training and after 2 weeks of rest since training was stopped. The content of collagen fibers and the cell nuclei number were quantified on tendon cross sections. In order to assess the training effectiveness, we evaluated the heart/body weight ratio, which was higher in 45 day-trained rats than their controls (P<0.01),…

Tabu search for the Max–Mean Dispersion Problem

2015

In this paper, we address a variant of a classical optimization model in the context of maximizing the diversity of a set of elements. In particular, we propose heuristics to maximize the mean dispersion of the selected elements in a given set. This NP-hard problem was recently introduced as the maximum mean dispersion problem (MaxMeanDP), and it models several real problems, from pollution control to ranking of web pages. In this paper, we first review the previous methods for the MaxMeanDP, and then explore different tabu search approaches, and their influence on the quality of the solutions obtained. As a result, we propose a dynamic tabu search algorithm, based on three different neighb…

Tabu search and GRASP for the maximum diversity problem

2007

In this paper, we develop new heuristic procedures for the maximum diversity problem (MDP). This NP-hard problem has a significant number of practical applications such as environmental balance, telecommunication services or genetic engineering. The proposed algorithm is based on the tabu search methodology and incorporates memory structures for both construction and improvement. Although proposed in seminal tabu search papers, memory-based constructions have often been implemented in naive ways that disregard important elements of the fundamental tabu search proposals. We will compare our tabu search construction with a memory-less design and with previous algorithms recently developed for…

Hydropower Optimization Using Split-Window, Meta-Heuristic and Genetic Algorithms

2019

In this paper, we try to find the most efficient optimization algorithm that can be used to resolve the hydropower optimization problem. We propose a novel optimization technique is called the Split-window method. The method is relatively simple and reduces the complexity of the optimization problem by split-ting the planning horizon (and datasets) into equal windows and assigning the same values to policies(actions) within each part. After splitting, a meta-heuristic technique is used to optimize the actions, and the dataset is split again until a split contains only one instance (timestep). The unique values to be optimized during each iteration is equal to the number of splits which make…

Context-Independent Scatter and Tabu Search for Permutation Problems

2005

In this paper, we develop a general-purpose heuristic for permutations problems. The procedure is based on the scatter-search and tabu-search methodologies and treats the objective-function evaluation as a black box, making the search algorithm context-independent. Therefore, our main contribution consists of the development and testing of a procedure that uses no knowledge from the problem context to search for the optimal solution. We perform computational experiments with four well-known permutation problems to study the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method. These experiments include a comparison with two commercially available software packages that are also based on met…

Multiresolution based on weighted averages of the hat function I: Linear reconstruction techniques

1998

In this paper we analyze a particular example of the general framework developed in [A. Harten, {\it SIAM J. Numer. Anal}., 33 (1996) pp. 1205--1256], the case in which the discretization operator is obtained by taking local averages with respect to the hat function. We consider a class of reconstruction procedures which are appropriate for this multiresolution setting and describe the associated prediction operators that allow us to climb up the ladder from coarse to finer levels of resolution. In Part I we use data-independent (linear) reconstruction techniques as our approximation tool. We show how to obtain multiresolution transforms in bounded domains and analyze their stability with r…
