Smart camera based on an Embedded HW/SW Co-Processor

2008

Abstract This paper describes an image acquisition and a processing system based on a new coprocessor architecture designed for CMOS sensor imaging. The system exploits the full potential CMOS selective access imaging technology because the coprocessor unit is integrated into the image acquisition loop. The acquisition and coprocessing architecture are compatible with the majority of CMOS sensors. It enables the dynamic selection of a wide variety of acquisition modes as well as the reconfiguration and implementation of high-performance image preprocessing algorithms (calibration, filtering, denoising, binarization, pattern recognition). Furthermore, the processing and data transfer, from t…

Three-dimensional numerical simulations on wind- and tide-induced currents: The case of Augusta Harbour (Italy)

2014

The hydrodynamic circulation in the coastal area of the Augusta Bay (Italy), located in the eastern part of Sicily, is analysed. Due to the heavy contamination generated by the several chemical and petrochemical industries active in the zone, the harbour was declared a Contaminated Site of National Interest. To mitigate the risks connected with the industrial activities located near the harbour, it is important to analyse the hydrodynamic circulation in the coastal area. To perform such analysis, a parallel 3D numerical model is used to solve the Reynolds-averaged momentum and mass balance, employing the k-e turbulence model for the Reynolds stresses. The numerical model is parallelized usi…

A Selective Change Driven System for High-Speed Motion Analysis.

2016

Vision-based sensing algorithms are computationally-demanding tasks due to the large amount of data acquired and processed. Visual sensors deliver much information, even if data are redundant, and do not give any additional information. A Selective Change Driven (SCD) sensing system is based on a sensor that delivers, ordered by the magnitude of its change, only those pixels that have changed most since the last read-out. This allows the information stream to be adjusted to the computation capabilities. Following this strategy, a new SCD processing architecture for high-speed motion analysis, based on processing pixels instead of full frames, has been developed and implemented into a Field …

An Innovative dosimeter based on a floating Gate sensor

2019

This work describes the development of a new method for recording radiation exposure by using a passive dosimeter based on a Floating Gate CMOS sensor. The floating Gate sensors based on the MOS structure discharge allow the construction of compact and cost-efficient dosimeters, realized in VLSI CMOS technology, for use in integration mode in various applications, in particular in radiotherapy.

A Low-Power Fully-Mosfet Voltage Reference Generator for 90 nm CMOS Technology

2006

An integrated voltage reference generator, designed for being incorporated in standard 90-nm CMOS technology flash memories, is described in this paper. A fully MOSFET based approach, using also subthreshold operated devices, has been adopted in order to achieve low-voltage and low-power requirements and to overcome the difficulties of conventional band-gap reference circuits. The proposed circuit, based on current signals, internally generates two currents with opposite dependence on temperature. The two currents are added, thus canceling almost completely temperature dependence, and then linearly converted into the output voltage. For a temperature variation between -20degC and 90degC, th…

Smart cameras on a chip: using complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors to create smart vision chips

2020

Abstract: In this chapter, we introduce the fundamental concept of smart cameras on a chip or smart vision chips that simultaneously integrate the same die image capture capability and highly complex image processing. Successive technology scaling has made possible the integration of specific processing elements designed at chip level, at column level or at pixel level. To illustrate this continuous evolution, we survey three different categories of vision chips, exploring first the pioneering works on artificial retinas, then describing the most significant computational chips, and finally presenting the most recent image processing chips able to perform complex algorithms at a high frame …

Monolithic integration of GMR sensors for standard CMOS-IC current sensing

2017

Abstract In this work we report on the development of Giant Magnetoresistive (GMR) sensors for off-line current measurements in standard integrated circuits. An ASIC has been specifically designed and fabricated in the well-known AMS-0.35 μm CMOS technology, including the electronic circuitry for sensor interfacing. It implements an oscillating circuit performing a voltage-to-frequency conversion. Subsequently, a fully CMOS-compatible low temperature post-process has been applied for depositing the GMR sensing devices in a full-bridge configuration onto the buried current straps. Sensitivity and resolution of these sensors have been investigated achieving experimental results that show a de…

Quasi-digital conversion for resistive devices: application in GMR-based IC current sensors

2013

Resistive devices, including sensors, are used in a huge range of applications within different scenarios. When a complete system is considered, a quasi-digital output is often recommendable. If the conversion is operated at device level, some problems such as noise disturbs, insertion losses and so on, can be reduced. In this work, we describe a resistance-tofrequency (R-f) converter with a suggested application in low current monitoring by means of GiantMagnetoResistance (GMR) sensors. Specific devices have been designed and microfabricated. The system has been tested by means of discrete components with a PCB. The complete microsystem monolithic integration in a standard CMOS technology …

Reconfigurable dualband antenna module with integrated high voltage charge pump and digital analog converter

2014

Integration of a reconfigurable antenna module for handheld applications employing a set of novel technologies is demonstrated. A low profile dualband hybrid dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) based on glass-ceramics and a tunable matching network (TMN) based on ferroelectric varactors with a maximum biasing of 90V form a reconfigurable antenna module. The control of the antenna module is performed by a 120V CMOS high voltage (HV) charge pump with an 8-bit digital analog (D/A) converter generated from a 3.7V battery. Adaptive impedance matching at the lower band of 1.9 GHz is carried out by the TMN when the dualband antenna is exposed to different operation scenarios. Meanwhile, the upper b…
