desat1 and the Evolution of Pheromonal Communication in Drosophila

2009

1749-6632 (Electronic) 0077-8923; The evolution of communication is a fundamental biological problem. The genetic control of the signal and its reception must be tightly coadapted, especially in interindividual sexual communication. However, there is very little experimental evidence for tight genetic linkage connecting the emission of a signal and its reception. In Drosophila melanogaster, desat1 is the first known gene that simultaneously affects the emission and the perception of sex pheromones. Our experiments show that both aspects of pheromonal communication (the emission and the perception of sex pheromones) depend on distinct genetic control and may result from tissue-specific expre…

desat1: A Swiss army knife for pheromonal communication and reproduction?

2012

International audience; The desat1 gene possesses an extraordinary-maybe unique-feature in the control of sensory communication systems: it codes for the two principal and complementary aspects-the emission and the reception-of Drosophila sex pheromones. These two complex aspects depend on separate genetic control indicating that desat1 pleiotropically acts on pheromonal communication. This gene also control other characters either related to reproduction and to osmoregulation. Such a functional pleiotropy may be related to the molecular structure of desat1 gene which combines a highly conserved coding region with fast evolving regulatory regions: It produces at least five transcripts all g…

A methodology for assessing the effect of correlations among muscle synergy activations on task-discriminating information

2013

Delis, Ioannis | Berret, Bastien | Pozzo, Thierry | Panzeri, Stefano; International audience; ''Muscle synergies have been hypothesized to be the building blocks used by the central nervous system to generate movement. According to this hypothesis, the accomplishment of various motor tasks relies on the ability of the motor system to recruit a small set of synergies on a single-trial basis and combine them in a task-dependent manner. It is conceivable that this requires a fine tuning of the trial-to-trial relationships between the synergy activations. Here we develop an analytical methodology to address the nature and functional role of trial-to-trial correlations between synergy activation…

Variation in contents of main active components and antioxidant activity in leaves of different pigeon pea cultivars during growth.

2013

Pigeon pea is an important and multiuse grain legume crop, and its leaves are a very valuable natural resource. To obtain a high-quality biological resource, it is necessary to choose the excellent cultivar and determine the appropriate harvest time. In this study, the variation in contents of main active components and antioxidant activity in leaves of six pigeon pea cultivars during growth were investigated. The level of each individual active component significantly varied during growth, but with a different pattern, and this variation was different among cultivars. Flavonoid glycosides orientin, vitexin, and apigenin-6,8-di-C-α-L-arabinopyranoside showed two peak values at mid-late and …

Authentication of berries and berry-based food products.

2021

Abstract Berries represent one of the most important and high-valued group of modern-day health-beneficial “superfoods” whose dietary consumption has been recognized to be beneficial for human health for a long time. In addition to being delicious, berries are rich in nutrients, vitamins, and several bioactive compounds, including carotenoids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and hydrolysable tannins. However, due to their high value, berries and berry-based products are often subject to fraudulent adulteration, commonly for economical gain, but also unintentionally due to misidentification of species. Deliberate adulteration often comprises the substitution of high-value berries with lower valu…

Profil Tempat Tumbuh Sarang Semut (Myrmecodia spp.) Di Distrik Manokwari Selatan Papua Barat

2019

Papua has a very high diversity of flora species, one of which is a type of Sarang Semut. Different growing conditions will affect the level of diversity of plants. For that information about the place to grow Ant Plant is needed as basic information for the development of the cultivation of Ant plants. The method used is descriptive method with field observation technique. The results showed that the type of ant nest plant found in South Manokwari was a type of Myrmecodia pendans and Myrmecodia cf. schlechteri. Both of these species do not grow evenly in all study locations even at the same height, this plant has a characteristic growing place: it grows on host trees that are not slippery,…

Importance of quantiser design compared to optimal multigrid motion estimation in video coding

2000

Adaptive flow computation and DCT quantisation play complementary roles in motion compensated video coding schemes. Since the introduction of the intuitive entropy-constrained motion estimation of Dufaux et al. (1995), several optimal variable-size block matching algorithms have been proposed. Many of these approaches put forward their intrinsic optimality, but the corresponding visual effect has not been explored. The relative importance of optimal multigrid motion estimation with regard to quantisation is addressed in the context of MPEG-like coding. It is shown that while simpler (suboptimal) motion estimates give subjective results as good as the optimal motion estimates, small enhancem…

Efficient protocol for qubit initialization with a tunable environment

2017

We propose an efficient qubit initialization protocol based on a dissipative environment that can be dynamically adjusted. Here the qubit is coupled to a thermal bath through a tunable harmonic oscillator. On-demand initialization is achieved by sweeping the oscillator rapidly into resonance with the qubit. This resonant coupling with the engineered environment induces fast relaxation to the ground state of the system, and a consecutive rapid sweep back to off resonance guarantees weak excess dissipation during quantum computations. We solve the corresponding quantum dynamics using a Markovian master equation for the reduced density operator of the qubit-bath system. This allows us to optim…

The challenge of forgetting: Neurobiological mechanisms of auditory directed forgetting

2017

Directed forgetting (DF) is considered an adaptive mechanism to cope with unwanted memories. Understanding it is crucial to develop treatments for disorders in which thought control is an issue. With an item-method DF paradigm in an auditory form, the underlying neurocognitive processes that support auditory DF were investigated. Subjects were asked to perform multi-modal encoding of word-stimuli before knowing whether to remember or forget each word. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we found that DF is subserved by a right frontal-parietal-cingulate network. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses of the activation of this network show converging evidence suggesting that DF …
