Variation in assessing the need for change of snacking habits in schoolchildren's oral health counselling

Objectives.  This study examined counselling communication activities that were used for assessing schoolchildren's need for change of snacking habits. In addition, the schoolchildren's assessment of their need for change was explored after a follow-up year (2002–2003). Material and methods.  The follow-up research data included 66 counselling sessions in 2002 and 31 counselling sessions in 2003, with 31 schoolchildren. Dispersal of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in a burn intensive care unit.

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a pathogen of special concern in intensive care units (ICUs). The burn units are a very susceptible habitat to colonization and infection events by this organism. In this paper isolation of MRSA from a sepsis case and from samples of the care unit air is described, along with simultaneous circulation of two clones of MRSA. Some peculiar epidemiological features of MRSA in burn intensive care wards are confirmed.

Freshwater Rivularia haematites (D.C.) Agardh and Rivularia biasolettiana Menegh‐ini stromatolites were collected from the Plateau de Langres and Lac d'Annecy (France) and investigated experimentally. In addition to cyanobacteria, the community of organisms consists of Desmococcus (green algae) and many bacteria including Agrobacterium tumefaciens and Pseudomonas diminuta for Rivularia haematites, and Achromobacter group B and Pseudomonas acidovorans for Rivularia biasolettiana. Bacteria, fungi, algae and higher plants are the most prolific producers of natural products (secondary metabolites). Compared to macroalgae, considerably fewer natural products have been isolated from microalgae, which offer the possibility of obtaining sufficient and well-defined biological material from laboratory cultures. International audience; Cyclopropane fatty acid (CFA) synthesis was investigated in Oenococcus oeni. The data obtained demonstrated that acid-grown cells or cells harvested in the stationary growth phase showed changes in fatty acid composition similar to those of ethanol-grown cells. An increase of the CFA content and a decrease of the oleic acid content were observed. The biosynthesis of CFAs from unsaturated fatty acid phospholipids is catalysed by CFA synthases. Quantitative real-time-PCR experiments were performed on the cfa gene of O. oeni, which encodes a putative CFA synthase. ABSTRACT Cyclopropane fatty acids (CFAs) are synthetized in situ by the transfer of a methylene group from S -adenosyl- l -methionine to a double bond of unsaturated fatty acid chains of membrane phospholipids. This conversion, catalyzed by the Cfa synthase enzyme, occurs in many bacteria and is recognized to play a key role in the adaptation of bacteria in response to a drastic perturbation of the environment. Selection of amine-oxidizing dairy lactic acid bacteria and identification of the enzyme and gene involved in the decrease of biogenic amines

ABSTRACT Accumulation of biogenic amines (BAs) in cheese and other foods is a matter of public health concern. The aim of this study was to identify the enzyme activities responsible for BA degradation in lactic acid bacteria which were previously isolated from traditional Sicilian and Apulian cheeses. The selected strains would control the concentration of BAs during cheese manufacture. First, 431 isolates not showing genes encoding the decarboxylases responsible for BA formation were selected using PCR-based methods. An improved protocol for electroporation ofOenococcus oeniATCC BAA-1163 using ethanol as immediate membrane fluidizing agent

Aims:  To finalize an effective and reproducible electroporation procedure to transform Oenococcus oeni ATCC BAA-1163 strain. Methods and Results:  The vector pGID052 was selected to optimize the electroporation procedure. Transformation efficiency was 5·8 × 103 per μg of DNA. Transformation was improved when competent cells were prepared with exponential phase cultures; optimum electroporation parameters were an electric pulse of 12·5 kV cm−1, under a resistance of 200 Ω and the presence of 10% (v/v) ethanol in the electroporation buffer (EPB).
