Abstract Yeasts and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) coinoculation is the simultaneous, or close in time inoculation, of both types of microorganisms in winemaking. Coinoculation has been used mainly to early accomplish malolactic fermentation (MLF), employing generally the couples Oenococcus oeni/Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lactobacillus plantarum/S. cerevisiae. Early completion of MLF decreases the overall vinification time, reduces the microbial spoilage risk, and even prevents the biogenic amines synthesis. Metaphycus sp. nr. flavus (Encyrtidae: Hymenoptera) is a parasitoid species collected from the Mediterranean region which lays its eggs in the immature stages of several economically important soft scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccidae), including brown soft scale, Coccus hesperidum L. (= host insect). Preliminary tests suggested that the parasitoid is most successful in producing offspring when it oviposits in the younger stages of brown soft scale. Staphylococcus prevails in the skin microbiota of long-term immunodeficient mice

Summary Host-commensal relationships in the skin are a complex system governed by variables related to the host, the bacteria and the environment. A disruption of this system may lead to new steady states, which, in turn, may lead to disease. We have studied one such disruption by characterizing the skin micro- biota in healthy and immunodepressed (ID) mice. A detailed anatomopathological study failed to reveal any difference between the skin of healthy and ID mice. A polyphasic approach in order to identify dominant lactic acid bacteria during pasta manufacturing

Using a polyphasic approach, we have isolated and identified, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in samples directly collected from an artisanal pasta-making manufactory located in Puglia (South Italy). Samples were collected during several steps of pasta processing and LAB were isolated on MRS and M17 plates. Furthermore, strains were grouped in a total of eight species by means of randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) typing and 16S rDNA sequencing. Abstract Effects of soybean meal (SBM) based diet on growth performance, histology of the intestinal epithelium and on the gut microbiota of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated on two trials lasting for 8 weeks (Trial I) and 18 weeks (Trial II). The microbiological characterization was done both with conventional plating techniques, biochemical profiling and length heterogeneity analysis of PCR amplified 16S rDNA (LH-PCR). Mechanism of lipid-body formation in prokaryotes: how bacteria fatten up

Neutral lipid accumulation is frequently observed in some Gram-negative prokaryotes like Acinetobacter sp. and most actinomycetes, including the pathogenic Mycobacterium tuberculosis and antibiotic producing streptomycetes. We examined the formation of wax ester- and triacylglycerol (TAG)-bodies in Acinetobacter calcoaceticus and Rhodococcus opacus using microscopic, immunological and biophysical methods. Antimicrobial efficacy of the supernatant of <i>Streptococcus dentisani</i> against microorganisms implicated in root canal infections

The present study aimed to test the antimicrobial activity of Streptococcus dentisani (S. dentisani) supernatant against a collection of microorganisms implicated in dental root infections, and to analyze morphological changes induced in a selection of the tested microorganisms. A total of 22 microbial species were selected, and their growth was monitored by spectrophotometry in the presence and absence of the supernatant of S. dentisani at different assay concentrations (0.2×, 1×, 2×). Objective: This study aimed to compare the metagenome of human milk samples provided by healthy and mastitis-suffering women. Methods: DNA was isolated from human milk samples collected from 10 healthy women and 10 women with symptoms of lactational mastitis. Connection between Absorption Properties and Conformational Changes in Deinococcus radiodurans Phytochrome

Phytochromes consist of several protein domains and a linear tetrapyrrole molecule, which interact as a red-light-sensing system. In this study, size-exclusion chromatography and light-scattering techniques are combined with UV-vis spectroscopy to investigate light-induced changes in dimeric Deinococcus radiodurans bacterial phytochrome (DrBphP) and its subdomains. The photosensory unit (DrCBD-PHY) shows an unusually stable Pfr state with minimal dark reversion, whereas the histidine kinase (HK) domain facilitates dark reversion to the resting state.
