Neuropsychological profiles of FMR-1 premutation and full-mutation carrier females

1999

Abstract The present French–German investigation of fragile-X syndrome (fra-X) was undertaken to disentangle genetic from environmental effects on cognitive performance as assessed with the following measures: Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R), Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Trail-Making Test, Tower of Hanai, Verbal Fluency Test, Stroop Test, short-term and consolidation memory, and the d2 task. Groups with different genotypes ( n =11 mothers with a full mutation in the FMR-1 gene of fra-X children; n =65 mothers with a premutation in the FMR-1 gene of fra-X children; n =18 siblings of these mothers with normal CGG repeats) and with different psychosocial stressors from fra-X…

Cerebrospinal Fluid Tau Protein Levels and 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography in the Differential Diagnosis o…

2010

<i>Aims:</i> In this study, we aimed to compare cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of total tau (t-tau), phosphorylated tau (p-tau181) and positron emission tomography with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG-PET) in the differential diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) under clinical conditions. <i>Method:</i> In a cross-sectional, blinded, single-center study, we examined a sample of 75 unselected memory clinic patients with clinical diagnoses of dementia of Alzheimer type (DAT; n = 24), amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI; n = 16), other dementias (n = 13) and nondemented controls (n = 22). Discriminative accuracy, sensitiv…

Cognitive deficits in beta-thalassemia major

2000

Objectives To assess cognitive functioning in patients affected by beta-thalassemia major (beta-th) by using a neuropsychological battery, and to identify clinical correlates. Material and methods Forty-six beta-th patients and 46 controls similar for age, sex, and education participated in the study. All subjects performed a comprehensive neuropsychological battery including tests of abstract reasoning, attention, executive functions, language, constructional/visuospatial skills, and memory. Results Compared to controls beta-th patients, in particular those showing signs of hemosiderosis, were significantly impaired on all neuropsychological tests. There was no relationship between cogniti…

PROTON MAGNETIC RESONANCE SPECTROSCOPY IN DEMENTIA OF ALZHEIMER TYPE

1997

Reduced N-acetyl aspartate (NAA) and increased myo-inositol (MI) levels have been reported in patients with dementia of Alzheimer type (DAT) in comparison with controls. We wished to assess the validity of these findings and to evaluate possible correlations of metabolite proportions with cognitive dysfunction in DAT. Twelve patients with DAT and 10 healthy age-matched controls were included. The severity of dementia was assessed using different scales including the Mini-Mental State Examination. MRS was performed with a conventional 1.5 Tesla scanner in a single voxel in the centrum semi-ovale (TE = 30 ms or TE = 136 ms; TR = 1500 ms). The evaluation of MRS results was limited by low inter…

RIPHeart (Remote Ischemic Preconditioning for Heart Surgery) Study: Myocardial Dysfunction, Postoperative Neurocognitive Dysfunction, and 1 Year Foll…

2018

Background Remote ischemic preconditioning ( RIPC ) has been suggested to protect against certain forms of organ injury after cardiac surgery. Previously, we reported the main results of RIPHeart (Remote Ischemic Preconditioning for Heart Surgery) Study, a multicenter trial randomizing 1403 cardiac surgery patients receiving either RIPC or sham‐ RIPC . Methods and Results In this follow‐up paper, we present 1‐year follow‐up of the composite primary end point and its individual components (all‐cause mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke and acute renal failure), in a sub‐group of patients, intraoperative myocardial dysfunction assessed by transesophageal echocardiography and the incidenc…

Cognitive impairment in patients suffering from relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis with EDSS ≤ 3.5

2003

Objectives – Previous papers have mainly demonstrated the presence and the frequency of cognitive impairment in patients suffering from relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate subjects with the relapsing-remitting form of the disease and mild clinical disability (EDSS ≤ 3.5), so as to quantify this deficit when the illness does not yet interfere with daily living and the ability to work. Methods – Fifty patients and 50 healthy controls were submitted to a wide neuropsychological battery, including Wechsler Memory Scale – I- (WMS), Benton Visual Retention Test – D- (BVRT), Raven Coloured Progressive Matrices (RCPM), Kohs’ test (KT), Judgement of L…

Evaluation of the animal-assisted therapy in Alzheimer's disease

2017

Animal-assisted therapy sessions have been set up in a protected unit for patients with a dementia-related syndrome. The aim is to measure the effects of animal-assisted therapy on behavioural disorders in daily life and care. The results obtained provided some interesting areas to explore and recommendations with a view to optimising the implementation of such a system.

Vascular Risk Factors in Mild Cognitive Impairment Subtypes

2007

<i>Background and Aim:</i> To investigate the role of vascular risk factors in different subtypes of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in a multicentric, clinic-based, cross-sectional study. <i>Methods:</i> Two-hundred and seven subjects with MCI were included in the study: 33 with single non-memory MCI (snmMCI), 42 with multiple-domain amnestic MCI (mdMCI-a) and 132 with amnestic MCI (aMCI). Several clinical vascular risk factors and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain lesions were evaluated. <i>Results:</i> snmMCI showed a higher frequency of ischaemic heart disease and of transient ischaemic attack (TIA)/stroke, a higher Hachinski ischaemic score and …
