Lower and Upper Probability Bounds for Some Conjunctions of Two Conditional Events

2018

In this paper we consider, in the framework of coherence, four different definitions of conjunction among conditional events. In each of these definitions the conjunction is still a conditional event. We first recall the different definitions of conjunction; then, given a coherent probability assessment (x, y) on a family of two conditional events \(\{A|H,B|K\}\), for each conjunction \((A|H) \wedge (B|K)\) we determine the (best) lower and upper bounds for the extension \(z=P[(A|H) \wedge (B|K)]\). We show that, in general, these lower and upper bounds differ from the classical Frechet-Hoeffding bounds. Moreover, we recall a notion of conjunction studied in recent papers, such that the res…

Influence of Global Structure on Musical Target Detection and Recognition

1998

The present study adapted a paradigm used in visual perception by Biederman, Glass, and Stacy (1973) and analyzed the influence of a coherent global context on the detection and recognition of musical target excerpts. Global coherence was modified by segmenting minuets into chunks of four, two, or one bar. These chunks were either reordered (Experiments 1, 3, 4, 5) or transposed to different keys (Experiment 2). The results indicate that target detection is influenced only by a reorganization on a very local level (i.e. chunks of one bar). Context incoherence did not influence the recognition of the real targets, but rendered the rejection of wrong target excerpts (foils) more difficult. Th…

The windowed scalogram difference: A novel wavelet tool for comparing time series

2017

Abstract We introduce a new wavelet-based tool called windowed scalogram difference (WSD), which has been designed to compare time series. This tool allows quantifying if two time series follow a similar pattern over time, comparing their scalograms and determining if they give the same weight to the different scales. The WSD can be seen as an alternative to another tool widely used in wavelet analysis called wavelet squared coherence (WSC) and, in some cases, it detects features that the WSC is not able to identify. As an application, the WSD is used to examine the dynamics of the integration of government bond markets in the euro area since the inception of the euro as a European single c…

Acoustic spectral hole-burning in a two-level system ensemble

2020

AbstractMicroscopic two-level system (TLS) defects at dielectric surfaces and interfaces are among the dominant sources of loss in superconducting quantum circuits, and their properties have been extensively probed using superconducting resonators and qubits. We report on spectroscopy of TLSs coupling to the strain field in a surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonator. The narrow free spectral range of the resonator allows for two-tone spectroscopy where a strong pump is applied at one resonance, while a weak signal is used to probe a different mode. We map the spectral hole burnt by the pump tone as a function of frequency and extract parameters of the TLS ensemble. Our results suggest that det…

Emergence of long-range phase coherence in nonlocal nonlinear media

2017

The emergence of long range phase coherence among random nonlinear waves is a fascinating effect that characterizes many fundamental phenomena. For instance, the condensation of classical waves [1,2] is an important example of self-organization process that generates lot of interest as a classical analogue of quantum Bose-Einstein condensation. Wave condensation is known to be characterized by the emergence of long-range order and phase-coherence, in the sense that the correlation function of the wave amplitude does not decay at infinity. This property of long range phase coherence is fundamental, for instance for the manifestation of superfluid behaviors, or the generation of Bogoliubov so…

Observation of classical optical wave condensation

2010

We demonstrate the nonlinear condensation of classical optical waves. The condensation is observed directly, as a function of nonlinearity and wave kinetic energy, in a self-defocusing photorefractive crystal.

Uniform analytic description of dephasing effects in two-state transitions

2007

We describe the effect of pure dephasing upon the time-dependent dynamics of two-state quantum systems in the framework of a Lindblad equation for the time evolution of the density matrix. A uniform approximate formula is derived, which modifies the corresponding lossless transition probability by an exponential factor containing the dephasing rate and the interaction parameters. This formula is asymptotically exact in both the diabatic and adiabatic limits; comparison with numerical results shows that it is highly accurate also in the intermediate range. Several two-state models are considered in more detail, including the Landau-Zener, Rosen-Zener, Allen-Eberly, and Demkov-Kunike models, …

The electron gas with short coherence length pairs: how to approach the stronger coupling limit?

2001

Abstract The attractive Hubbard model is investigated in 2D using a T -matrix approach. In a self-consistent calculation pairs as infinite lifetime Bosons only exist in the atomic limit and therefore a Fermi surface can be investigated also in the stronger coupling regime. A heavy quasiparticle peak with a weak dispersion crosses the Fermi surface at k F whereas light, single particle excitations do only exist far away from the Fermi surface. At low temperatures there seem to exist different self-consistent solutions. In one of them a pseudogap opens even in the integrated density of states. In the present work accurate k -dependent and k -integrated spectral quantities for a 2D finite latt…

Quantum signatures in the dynamics of two dipole-dipole interacting soft dimers

2006

The quantum covariances of physically transparent pairs of observables relative to two dimers hosted in a solid matrix are exactly investigated in the temporal domain. Both dimers possess fermionic and bosonic degrees of freedom and are dipolarly coupled. We find out and describe clear signatures traceable back to the presence and persistence of quantum coherence in the time evolution of the system. Manifestations of a competition between intramolecular and intermolecular energy migration mechanisms are brought to light. The experimental relevance of our results is briefly commented.

Quantum coherence and entanglement with ultracold atoms in optical lattices

2008

At nanokelvin temperatures, ultracold quantum gases can be stored in optical lattices, which are arrays of microscopic trapping potentials formed by laser light. Such large arrays of atoms provide opportunities for investigating quantum coherence and generating large-scale entanglement, ultimately leading to quantum information processing in these artificial crystal structures. These arrays can also function as versatile model systems for the study of strongly interacting many-body systems on a lattice.
