Influence of storage and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion on totqal antioxidant capacity of fruit beverages

Eight fruit beverages containing grape, orange and apricot, with/without iron and/or zinc and with/without milk added were analyzed for total antioxidant capacity (ORAC and TEAC methods), ascorbic acid content, and total polyphenols. The influence of cold storage (2-4 degrees C) during the product shelf-life (135 days) and antioxidant capacity after an in vitro gastrointestinal digestion were evaluated. Antioxidant capacity for all beverages together increased significantly (p < 0.05) at the end of storage (16.4% and 12.8% for ORAC and TEAC, respectively), whereas ascorbic acid remained stable. Physical and chemical changes in minimally processed green asparagus during cold-storage

The purpose of this research is to study effects of an innovative packaging method on the shelf-life of minimally processed green asparagus. The physical-chemical parameters analyzed (weight loss, colour, texture, chlorophyll and citric acid), and monitored by untrained panellists during the cold storage period at 6 degrees C, showed that pairing of a semi-permeable film with an adsorbent material and immersion in ascorbic acid solution were able to extend the shelf-life of green asparagus. Changes of morphogenic competence in mature Pinus sylvestris L. buds in vitro.

The effects of season and cold storage on morphogenic competence in mature Pinus sylvestris buds were investigated. Peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase activity were measured as markers of oxidative metabolism. No growth in vitro was observed on explants detached from the end of January until the beginning of March. Brachioblasts, each with a couple of needles, formed on 11 % of the buds without macrostrobili that were detached in early April and introduced immediately into culture. Stability of fatty acids and tocopherols during cold storage of human milk

The stability of fatty acids and tocopherols from human milk from 8 healthy lactating mothers was determined in fresh milk and after cold storage. Refrigeration at 4 °C for 48 h or freezing at −20 °C for 30 days did not significantly decrease fatty acid contents (mg per 100 g human milk), or concentrations of α-, β-, γ- and δ-tocopherol isomers, compared with fresh milk. Results obtained in the present study showed that cold storage under the usual storage conditions in neonatal units, at home or in milk banks did not have a detrimental effect upon fatty acids and tocopherols contents in human milk. Two different methods of liver preservation were compared : simple cold storage (CS) and hypothermic oxygenated perfusion extracorporal (HOPE). After 10 h of preservation (4°C) with modified UW solution reperfusion was performed by isolated liver perfusion for 90 minutes. Reperfusion injury was estimated by release of cytosolic enzymes, formation of superoxide anions, determination of lipid peroxidation, glycolytic metabolites, bileflow and by PCR analysis. Fennel is not a widespread product among minimally processed vegetables, due to the fast deterioration mainly caused by browning of the cut surfaces, even during cold storage. In order to extend the shelf-life of fresh-cut fennel, the influence of different packaging techniques was studied. Sliced fennel, dipped in citric acid solution (0.5 %), was placed in polystyrene trays, sealed with PE film or vacuum packaged in PE bags and stored up to 14 days at 4°C.
