Direct Experimental Verification of Neutron Acceleration by the Material Optical Potential of SolidH22

2008

We have measured the acceleration of neutrons by the material optical potential of solid $^{2}\mathrm{H}_{2}$. Using a gravitational spectrometer, we find a minimal kinetic energy ${E}_{c}=(99\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}7)\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{neV}$ of neutrons from a superthermal ultracold neutron (UCN) source with solid $^{2}\mathrm{H}_{2}$ as an UCN converter. The result is in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions, ${E}_{c}=106\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{neV}$.

Manifestations of Clustering in Fission of Excited Actinides

2003

A new, graphical way of extracting important physical information from the total kinetic-energy—mass (TKE—M) distributions of the nuclear reaction products is presented. The resulting images indicate for the first time the presence of the Ni—Mo and Ge—Mo fission modes in the fission of Np nuclei at intermediate excitation energies.

Joint constraints on galaxy bias and σ8 through the N-pdf of the galaxy number density

2015

We present a full description of the N-probability density function of the galaxy number density fluctuations. This N-pdf is given in terms, on the one hand, of the cold dark matter correlations and, on the other hand, of the galaxy bias parameter. The method relies on the assumption commonly adopted that the dark matter density fluctuations follow a local non-linear transformation of the initial energy density perturbations. The N-pdf of the galaxy number density fluctuations allows for an optimal estimation of the bias parameter (e.g., via maximum-likelihood estimation, or Bayesian inference if there exists any a priori information on the bias parameter), and of those parameters defining …

Precision measurement of spin-dependent interaction strengths for spin-1 and spin-2 87Rb atoms

2006

We report on precision measurements of spin-dependent interaction-strengths in the 87Rb spin-1 and spin-2 hyperfine ground states. Our method is based on the recent observation of coherence in the collisionally driven spin-dynamics of ultracold atom pairs trapped in optical lattices. Analysis of the Rabi-type oscillations between two spin states of an atom pair allows a direct determination of the coupling parameters in the interaction hamiltonian. We deduce differences in scattering lengths from our data that can directly be compared to theoretical predictions in order to test interatomic potentials. Our measurements agree with the predictions within 20%. The knowledge of these coupling pa…

Dark Matter and the Seesaw Scale

2018

We discuss the possibility to find an upper bound on the seesaw scale using the cosmological bound on the cold dark matter relic density. We investigate a simple relation between the origin of neutrino masses and the properties of a dark matter candidate in a simple theory where the new symmetry breaking scale defines the seesaw scale. Imposing the cosmological bounds, we find an upper bound of order multi-TeV on the lepton number violation scale. We investigate the predictions for direct and indirect detection dark matter experiments, and the possible signatures at the Large Hadron Collider.

Ultralight dark photon as a model for early universe dark matter

2019

Dark photon is a massive vector field which interacts only with the physical photon through the kinetic mixing. This coupling is assumed to be weak so that the dark photon becomes almost unobservable in processes with elementary particles, but can serve as a dark matter particle. We argue that in very early Universe ($z>3000$) this vector field may have the equation of state of radiation ($w=1/3$) but later behaves as cold dark matter ($w=0$). This may slightly change the expansion rate of the Universe at early time and reduce the value of the sound horizon of baryon acoustic oscillations (standard ruler). As a result, in this model the value of the Hubble constant appears to be larger than…

Nonminimal dark sector physics and cosmological tensions

2019

We explore whether non-standard dark sector physics might be required to solve the existing cosmological tensions. The properties we consider in combination are an interaction between the dark matter and dark energy components, and a dark energy equation of state $w$ different from that of the canonical cosmological constant $w=-1$. In principle, these two parameters are independent. In practice, to avoid early-time, superhorizon instabilities, their allowed parameter spaces are correlated. We analyze three classes of extended interacting dark energy models in light of the 2019 Planck CMB results and Cepheid-calibrated local distance ladder $H_0$ measurements of Riess et al. (R19), as well …

Cosmological searches for a non-cold dark matter component

2017

We explore an extended cosmological scenario where the dark matter is an admixture of cold and additional non-cold species. The mass and temperature of the non-cold dark matter particles are extracted from a number of cosmological measurements. Among others, we consider tomographic weak lensing data and Milky Way dwarf satellite galaxy counts. We also study the potential of these scenarios in alleviating the existing tensions between local measurements and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) estimates of the $S_8$ parameter, with $S_8=\sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_m}$, and of the Hubble constant $H_0$. In principle, a sub-dominant, non-cold dark matter particle with a mass $m_X\sim$~keV, could achieve…

Prediction for the lightest Higgs boson mass in the CMSSM using indirect experimental constraints

2007

Measurements at low energies provide interesting indirect information about masses of particles that are (so far) too heavy to be produced directly. Motivated by recent progress in consistently and rigorously calculating electroweak precision observables and flavour related observables, we derive the preferred value for m_h in the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM), obtained from a fit taking into account electroweak precision data, flavour physics observables and the abundance of Cold Dark Matter. No restriction is imposed on m_h itself: the experimental bound from direct Higgs boson search at LEP is not included in the fit. A multi-parameter chi^2 is minimized with …

nEDM experiment at PSI : data-taking strategy and sensitivity of the dataset

2018

We report on the strategy used to optimize the sensitivity of our search for a neutron electric dipole moment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Measurements were made upon ultracold neutrons stored within a single chamber at the heart of our apparatus. A mercury cohabiting magnetometer together with an array of cesium magnetometers were used to monitor the magnetic field, which was controlled and shaped by a series of precision field coils. In addition to details of the setup itself, we describe the chosen path to realize an appropriate balance between achieving the highest statistical sensitivity alongside the necessary control on systematic effects. The resulting irreducible sensitivity is …
