Background The increased risk of mortality during periods of high and low temperatures has been well established. However, most of the studies used daily counts of deaths or hospitalisations as health outcomes, although they are the ones at the top of the health impact pyramid reflecting only a limited proportion of patients with the most severe cases. The impact of supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCD) (10-60 MPa/45 °C/30 min) and subsequent 10 weeks storage at 4 °C on polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD) activities, phenolic profile, vitamin C, sugars, physicochemical properties of cloudy apple juices was investigated. No significant changes in sugars and total polyphenols were observed, whereas significant degradation (≈28%) of vitamin C and individual polyphenols (≈18%) was noted after SCCD treatment. After 4 weeks storage only 34% of vitamin C was retained and no vitamin C was detected after this time. The main cold shock protein of Listeria monocytogenes belongs to the family of ferritin-like proteins

The transfer of the food-borne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes from 30 to 5 degrees C was characterized by the sharp induction of a low molecular mass protein. This major cold shock protein has an isoelectric point at pH 5.1 and a molecular mass of about 18 kDa, as observed on two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) pattern. Its N-terminal sequence, obtained from the 2-DE spot, shared a complete sequence identity with a Listeria innocua non-heme iron-binding ferritin. The purification of these ferritin-like proteins (Flp) revealed a native molecular mass of about 100-110 kDa which indicates a polypeptide composed of six 18 kDa-subunits. Translational diffusion coefficients of volatile compounds in various aqueous solutions at low and subzero temperatures.

International audience; Translational diffusion coefficients (D(12)) of volatile compounds were measured in model media with the profile concentration method. The influence of sample temperature (from 25 to -10 degrees C) was studied on translational diffusion in sucrose or maltodextrin solutions at various concentrations. Results show that diffusivity of volatile compounds in sucrose solutions is controlled by temperature, molecule size, and the viscosity of the liquid phase as expected with the Stokes-Einstein equation; moreover, physicochemical interactions between volatile compounds and the medium are determinant for diffusion estimation. Epizootiology of protozoans in farmed salmonids at northern latitudes

Abstract Protozoan ectoparasites were examined in a northern salmonid fish farm over a 10-year period, June 1984–May 1994, by the same researcher, with similar catching and sampling procedures throughout. Husbandry procedures remained constant during the study, e.g., fingerlings were kept in steel tanks and yearlings in both steel tanks and earth ponds. In 1959, UNESCO published a catalogue of Eastern films suitable for Western audiences, titled ‘Orient. A Survey of Films Produced in Countries of Arab and Asian Culture’. The aim of the catalogue was to familiarise Western audiences with Eastern cultures through cinema. Relative Frequencies and Significance of Faecal Coliforms as Indicators Related to Water Temperature

Summary The faecal coliforms at different sites of a hypereutrophic lake near Valencia (Albufera) were identified and their relative amounts established along an annual cycle. Using lauryl tryptose broth at 35°C, followed by incubation at 44.4°C in 2% brilliant green bile, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae are practically the only coliforms present. A positive correlation was found between the water temperature and the relative amount of these two coliforms: K. pneumoniae predominates at high water temperatures, whereas E. coli shows preponderance during the cold period. ABSTRACT The presence of Ralstonia solanacearum biovar 2 in the watercourses of European countries is increasing, but little is known about its ecology in aquatic habitats. The detection of this pathogen in 2000 in one Spanish river led us to study its population density at different locations on the river over a period of 3 years. Influence of storage and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion on totqal antioxidant capacity of fruit beverages

Eight fruit beverages containing grape, orange and apricot, with/without iron and/or zinc and with/without milk added were analyzed for total antioxidant capacity (ORAC and TEAC methods), ascorbic acid content, and total polyphenols. The influence of cold storage (2-4 degrees C) during the product shelf-life (135 days) and antioxidant capacity after an in vitro gastrointestinal digestion were evaluated. The thermal behavior of the Soret band relative to the carbonmonoxy derivatives of some beta-chain mutant hemoglobins is studied in the temperature range 300-10 K and compared to that of wild-type carbonmonoxy hemoglobin.
