Comparing pollen spectra from modified Tauber traps and moss samples: examples from a selection of woodlands across Europe

2010

This paper compares pollen spectra derived from modified Tauber traps and moss samples from a selection of woodland types from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Georgia, Greece, Poland, Switzerland and Wales. The study examines the representation of individual taxa in the two sampling media and aims to ascertain the duration of pollen deposition captured by a moss. The latter aim was pursued through the calculation of dissimilarity indexes to assess how many years of pollen deposited in a pollen trap yield percentage values that are most similar to those obtained from the moss. The results are broadly scattered; the majority of moss samples being most similar to several years of pollen depositi…

The Inflammatory Response of Urochordata: The Basic Process of the Ascidians’ Innate Immunity

2018

Ascidians form a widespread marine invertebrate group and are heterogeneous in terms of the taxonomic groups’ evolutionary lineages. The ascidian genomes lack significant homologies for rearranging genes of the vertebrate adoptive immunity. Genome analysis, gene sequencing, and transcriptional profiling have allowed us to disclose upregulation of innate immunity genes and cell labeling with riboprobes and antibodies has identified hemocyte types in tunic and pharynx inflammatory responses. Lymphocyte-like cells are stem cells and their immunocompetence has been proposed. Granulocyte types (compartment/morula cells) and hemocytes with large granules/vacuoles (compartment/morula cells) are ma…

On Defining the Participatory Museum: The Case of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk

2021

This article seeks to contribute to the current debate on the new definition of the “museum” – a debate which led to turmoil at the 2019 ICOM General Assembly in Kyoto. With reference to the case study of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk (MSWW), it analyses the new and very successful genre of the narrative museum, a genre which arguably fulfils the core elements of the definition currently being discussed by ICOM. In this regard, it brings into focus the paramount importance of community involvement in creating and managing narrative museums – an aspect that has been virtually absent in the academic and media debates over the nature of the MSWW and its programme. By pointing ou…

Intercalated cells as a probable source for the development of renal oncocytoma

1988

Renal oncocytoma is a distinct type of epithelial tumor said to arise from the collecting duct system. Here we show that in nine of ten oncocytomas the tumor cells expressed an analog of the erythrocyte anion exchanger band 3. In the normal kidney band 3 is confined to the basolateral surface of the majority of intercalated cells which comprise up to 50% of the cortical collecting duct epithelium. Carbonic anhydrase c is another protein abundant in intercalated cells, and this was also expressed in six of the ten oncocytomas investigated. Immunoreactivity specific for band 3 and carbonic anhydrase c was not detected in any of the 20 renal cell carcinomas examined. At favourable section plan…

No Association between Mannose-Binding Lectin Alleles and Susceptibility to Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection in German Patients

1998

Variants of the mannose-binding lectin (MBL) have been shown to be associated with low serum concentrations of the protein and to predispose to bacterial, fungal and viral infections. A recent small study on 33 Caucasian patients had suggested that a mutation at codon 52 of the MBL gene is associated with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Exon 1 of the MBL gene was amplified by PCR in 61 patients with chronic HBV infection, 28 patients with acute infection and in 60 controls. MBL variants were detected by subsequent restriction enzyme digestion and agarose gel electrophoresis. The occurrence of the codon 52 mutation in patients with chronic HBV infection did not differ significantl…

Analisi comparativaSettore SECS-P/07 - Economia AziendaleAmministrazioni pubbliche territorialiCiclo di gestione della performanceThe literature has shown that the focus on performance management is shifting from collecting and reporting data to actually using them for decision making. The comparative case-study analysis presented in this article aims to identify the critical factors for adopting and implementing relevant performance management systems in regional governments. The evidence emerging from this casestudy analysis finds that certain variables are essential to advancing our progress in performance management including the role of legislation the need for leadership and the characteristics of performance indicators. The hope of this research is to encourage regional administrators to embrace leadership roles in interpreting and applying legal frameworks for realizing the benefits of performance management.

The Windy clustered prize-collecting arc-routing problem

2011

This paper introduces the windy clustered prize-collecting arc-routing problem. It is an arc-routing problem where each demand edge is associated with a profit that is collected once if the edge is serviced, independent of the number of times the edge is traversed. It is further required that if a demand edge is serviced, then all the demand edges of its component are also serviced. A mathematical programming formulation is given and some polyhedral results including several facet-defining and valid inequalities are presented. The separation problem for the different families of inequalities is studied. Numerical results from computational experiments are analyzed. © 2011 INFORMS.

Levantamiento 3D para el estudio arqueológico y la reconstrucción virtual del Santuario de Isis en la antigua Lilybaeum (Italia)

2020

[EN] In recent years, the use of three-dimensional (3D) models in cultural and archaeological heritage for documentation and dissemination purposes has increased. New geomatics technologies have significantly reduced the time spent on fieldwork surveys and data processing. The archaeological remains can be documented and reconstructed in a digital 3D environment thanks to the new 3D survey technologies. Furthermore, the products generated by modern surveying technologies can be reconstructed in a virtual environment on effective archaeological bases and hypotheses coming from a detailed 3D data analysis. However, the choice of technologies that should be used to get the best results for dif…
