Hemeroskopeion=Thynnoskopeion.

Biomarkers of periodontal tissue remodeling during orthodontic tooth movement in mice and men: overview and clinical relevance

2013

Biologically active substances are expressed by cells within the periodontium in response to mechanical stimuli from orthodontic appliances. Several possible biomarkers representing biological modifications during specific phenomena as simile-inflammatory process, bone resorption and formation, periodontal ligament changes, and vascular and neural responses are proposed. Citations to potentially published trials were conducted by searching PubMed, Cochrane databases, and scientific textbooks. Additionally, hand searching and contact with experts in the area were undertaken to identify potentially relevant published and unpublished studies. Selection criteria were as follows: animal models i…

Mast cell-derived mediators promote murine neutrophil effector functions

2013

Mast cells are able to trigger life-saving immune responses in murine models for acute inflammation. In such settings, several lines of evidence indicate that the rapid and protective recruitment of neutrophils initiated by the release of mast cell-derived pro-inflammatory mediators is a key element of innate immunity. Herein, we investigate the impact of mast cells on critical parameters of neutrophil effector function. In the presence of activated murine bone marrow-derived mast cells, neutrophils freshly isolated from bone marrow rapidly lose expression of CD62L and up-regulate CD11b, the latter being partly driven by mast cell-derived TNF and GM-CSF. Mast cells also strongly enhance neu…

Functional Magnetic Mesoporous Silica Microparticles Capped with an Azo-Derivative: A Promising Colon Drug Delivery Device

2018

[EN] Magnetic micro-sized mesoporous silica particles were used for the preparation of a gated material able to release an entrapped cargo in the presence of an azo-reducing agent and, to some extent, at acidic pH. The magnetic mesoporous microparticles were loaded with safranin O and the external surface was functionalized with an azo derivative 1 (bearing a carbamate linkage) yielding solid S1. Aqueous suspensions of S1 at pH 7.4 showed negligible safranin O release due to the presence of the bulky azo derivative attached onto the external surface of the inorganic scaffold. However, in the presence of sodium dithionite (azoreductive agent), a remarkable safranin O delivery was observed. A…

Resveratrol mediated cancer cell apoptosis, and modulation of multidrug resistance proteins and metabolic enzymes.

2019

Abstract Background The degree of intracellular drug accumulation by specific membrane transporters, i.e., MDR1, BCRP, and MRP, and the degree of detoxification by intracellular metabolic enzymes, i.e., CYP3A4 and GST, provide control for cancer chemotherapy through diminishing the propensity of cancer cells to undergo apoptosis which in turn modulates the unresolved and complex phenomenon of multidrug resistance (MDR) for the cancer cells. Hypothesis/Purpose This study dwells into the interaction details involving ABC-transporters, CYP3A4, GST and cytotoxic effects of resveratrol on different cell lines. Methods Resveratrol was evaluated for its ability modulating the expression and efflux…

Steroidal saponins from Dioscorea preussii.

2014

Abstract Three new steroidal saponins, named diospreussinosides A–C (1–3), along with two known ones (4, 5) were isolated from rhizomes of Dioscorea preussii. Their structures were elucidated mainly by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analysis and mass spectrometry as (25S)-17α,25-dihydroxyspirost-5-en-3β-yl-O-α- l -rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-α- l -rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-β- d -glucopyranoside (1), (25S)-17α,25-dihydroxyspirost-5-en-3β-yl-O-α- l -rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-α- l -rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-[α- l -rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)]-β- d -glucopyranoside (2), and (24S,25R)-17α,24,25-trihydroxyspirost-5-en-3β-yl-O-α- l -rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-α- l -rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-[α- l -rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → …

Essential oil of Sicilian Prangos ferulacea (L.) Lindl. and its major component, β−ocimen, affect contractility in rat small and large intestine

2023

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Prangos ferulacea (L.) Lindl is an Apiaceae plant, widely used in traditional medicine. Recently, chemical composition and biological activities of its essential oil (Prangroil) have been reported, but there are no studies on possible effects on intestinal contractility. Aims of the study: We investigated the effects of essential oil Sicilian Prangoil on the contractility of rat small (duodenum) and large (colon) intestine and the related action mechanism. Materials and methods: Responses to Prangoil and to its major component β-ocimen in intestinal segments were assessed in vitro as changes in isometric tension. Results: Prangoil, induced in duodenum, depend…

Social phenotype extended to communities: expanded multilevel social selection analysis reveals fitness consequences of interspecific interactions.

2014

In social species, fitness consequences are associated with both individual and social phenotypes. Social selection analysis has quantified the contribution of conspecific social traits to individual fitness. There has been no attempt, however, to apply a social selection approach to quantify the fitness implications of heterospecific social phenotypes. Here, we propose a novel social selection based approach integrating the role of all social interactions at the community level. We extended multilevel selection analysis by including a term accounting for the group phenotype of heterospecifics. We analyzed nest activity as a model social trait common to two species, the lesser kestrel (Falc…

Evidences of adaptive traits to rocky substrates undermine paradigm of habitat preference of the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica

2015

AbstractPosidonia oceanica meadows are acknowledged as one of the most valuable ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea. P. oceanica has been historically described as a species typically growing on mobile substrates whose development requires precursor communities. Here we document for the first time the extensive presence of sticky hairs covering P. oceanica seedling roots. Adhesive root hairs allow the seedlings to firmly anchor to rocky substrates with anchorage strength values up to 5.23 N, regardless of the presence of algal cover and to colonise bare rock without the need for precursor assemblages to facilitate settlement. Adhesive root hairs are a morphological trait common on plants li…
