The slow transit constipation (STC) is a functional bowel pathology with slow total gut transit time with normal calibre colon in addition to a variety of other systemic symptoms. Patients with an abnormal colonic motility refractory to conservative treatment are regarded as appropriate candidates for surgery. Laparoscopic total colectomy with ileum-rectum anastomosis represents the commonest surgical operation in the treatment of STC, in well selected patients, after failure of conservative treatment. A Universal Health Care System? Unmet Need for Medical Care Among Regular and Irregular Immigrants in Italy

Italy has a universal health care system that covers, in principle, the whole resident population, irrespective of citizenship and legal status. This study calculates the prevalence of unmet need for medical care among Italian citizens, regular and irregular immigrants and estimates logistic regression models to assess whether differences by citizenship and legal status hold true once adjusting for potential confounders. The analysis is based on two Surveys on Income and Living Conditions of Italian households and households with foreigners. The holding of local elections in 2002–03 can be seen as the culmination of this turn to democracy. Donors attach high expectations to decentralisation and local democracy. The aim of this work was to apply flow cytometry in order to assess and compare the viability of freeze-dried entrapped bacteria with an usual technique by quantification by plate count techniques. It also aimed at studying the effect of various cryoprotectants on the viability of an entrapped Bifidobacterium bifidum subjected to freeze-drying to check their ability to be delivered all along the gastro-intestinal tract. We studied the determinants of colony site dynamics in Audouin's gull, Larus audouinii, breeding in a small archipelago of the western Mediterranean. Data on island occupation were available for a series of 25 years, since first colonization of the archipelago in 1973. Group behavior was studied in relation to the components of dispersal: permanence or abandonment (extinction) on an island previously occupied and permanence or occupation (colonization) of another island. The paper shows the results of an experimental investigation on the behaviour of compressed concrete columns subjected to the overcoring technique. Extraction of cylindrical concrete cores in perpendicular direction to the column surface, was achieved by rotary drilling using a diamond tipped hollow barrel. Core is gradually isolated from the stress field in the surrounding concrete and at every advancing step the re-equilibrium deformation response is measured by means of four strain-gauges, placed on its external surface and near the hole.
