Photoactivated chlorophyllin-based gelatin films and coatings to prevent microbial contamination of food products

2008

[EN] The aim of this work was to develop antimicrobial photosensitizer-containing edible films and coatings based on gelatin as the polymer matrix. incorporating sodium magnesium chlorophyllin (E-140) and sodium copper chlorophyllin (E-141). Chlorophyllins were incorporated into the gelatin film-forming solution and the inhibiting effect of the cast films was tested against Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes. The results demonstrated that water soluble sodium magnesium chlorophyllin and water soluble sodium copper chlorophyllin reduced the growth of S. aureus and L monocytogenes by 5 log and 4 log respectively. Subsequently, the activity of self-standing films and coatings con…

A Silicone Ventricular Catheter Coated with a Combination of Rifampin and Trimethoprim for the Prevention of Catheter-related Infections

1998

So-called antiinfective catheters which are generated by incorporation of antimicrobial substances into polymers appear to be effectful devices in the prevention of catheter related infections. Such devices mainly act by prevention of bacterial colonization of the catheter surface rather than by inhibition of adherence. In a preceding study, we developed a rifampin-containing silicone catheter for the prevention of ventricular shunt infection. In the present study, this work was continued with a combination of antimicrobials incorporated in silicone ventricular catheters to reduce the risk of rifampin resistance and to expand the antimicrobial spectrum. We found that the drug release kineti…

Let Me in! The Affirmation of a Radical “Other”

2021

In the preceding chapters, we carefully revised the history of colonial expeditions, the intersection of the native “Other” with science, and the evolution of leisure travels and the consolidation of the tourism industry. We make the point that after the terrorist attacks in 2001 in the US, Western civilization entered a state of crisis which gradually tended to demonize the non-Western “Other”. These chapters acted as conceptual platforms that guided readers to understand the role played by hospitality in the configuration of the modern nation-state. Although illustrative to some extent, these chapters lacked an empirical approach. This chapter, complementarily, keeps an empirically based …

Inhibition of Cancer Derived Cell Lines Proliferation by Synthesized Hydroxylated Stilbenes and New Ferrocenyl-Stilbene Analogs. Comparison with Resv…

2014

Further advances in understanding the mechanism of action of resveratrol and its application require new analogs to identify the structural determinants for the cell proliferation inhibition potency. Therefore, we synthesized new trans-resveratrol derivatives by using the Wittig and Heck methods, thus modifying the hydroxylation and methoxylation patterns of the parent molecule. Moreover, we also synthesized new ferrocenylstilbene analogs by using an original protective group in the Wittig procedure. By performing cell proliferation assays we observed that the resveratrol derivatives show inhibition on the human colorectal tumor SW480 cell line. On the other hand, cell viability/cytotoxicit…

New potentially cytotoxic thiolatogold(I) complexes of 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene

1996

Abstract 1,1′-Bis[chlorogold(I) diphenylphosphino] ferrocene (1) was chosen as the starting material to synthesize new thiolato gold(I) complexes. This has been achieved by substituting the chlorine atoms by monofunctional and bifunctional thiolates affording ‘open’ thiolatogold complexes and trimetallic ferrocenophane-type structures, respectively. The new 1,1′-bis(2,6-dithia-1-phosphanyl)ferrocene (7) containing directly linked P and S atoms was also prepared but no gold complex was obtained. Compound 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n with a=10.2632), b=21.064(4), c=16.259(3) A , β=97.06(2)° and V=3.488(1) A 3 . The distance between the two gold atoms (3.06 A) indicates a…

Cytotoxicity and modes of action of four naturally occuring benzophenones: 2,2′,5,6′-Tetrahydroxybenzophenone, guttiferone E, isogarcinol and isoxant…

2012

Abstract Introduction The emergence of drug-resistant cancer cells drastically reduces the efficacy of many antineoplasic agents and, consequently, increases the frequency of therapeutic failure. Benzophenones are known to display many pharmacological properties including cytotoxic activities. The present study was aimed at investigating the cytotoxicity and the modes of action of four naturally occurring benzophenones 2,2′,5,6′-tetrahydroxybenzophenone ( 1 ), isogarcinol ( 2 ), isoxanthochymol ( 3 ) and guttiferone E ( 4 ) on a panel of eleven cancer cell lines including various sensitive and drug-resistant phenotypes. Methods The cytotoxicity of the compounds was determined using a resazu…

Three New Triterpene Saponins from Two Species of Carpolobia

2002

Three new acetylated triterpene saponins 1-3 were isolated from the roots of Carpolobia alba and C. lutea. Their structures were established mainly by 2D NMR techniques as 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosylpresenegenin-28-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1-->4)-[beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->4)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-(3,4-di-O-acetyl)-beta-D-fucopyranosyl ester, 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosylpresenegenin-28-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1-->4)-[alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->4)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-(3,4-di-O-acetyl)-beta-D-fucopyranosyl ester, and 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosylpresenegenin-28-O-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->4)-[beta-D-apiofuranosyl…

Animal rennets as sources of dairy lactic acid bacteria

2014

ABSTRACT The microbial composition of artisan and industrial animal rennet pastes was studied by using both culture-dependent and -independent approaches. Pyrosequencing targeting the 16S rRNA gene allowed to identify 361 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) to the genus/species level. Among lactic acid bacteria (LAB), Streptococcus thermophilus and some lactobacilli, mainly Lactobacillus crispatus and Lactobacillus reuteri , were the most abundant species, with differences among the samples. Twelve groups of microorganisms were targeted by viable plate counts revealing a dominance of mesophilic cocci. All rennets were able to acidify ultrahigh-temperature-processed (UHT) milk as shown by pH …
