Colonie, Imperi e Migrazioni. Un inquadramento postcoloniale dell'Europa multiculturale

2012

The article considers the multicultural roots of the European Union from a postcolonial perspective. Therefore, European history is outlined from colonialism to imperialism, concluding with recent regulations on international migration. The etymology of the terms colony and culture, both derived from the Latin verb colĕre (to cultivate), is the link that connects these themes, highlighting a conception of the relationship between Europeans and the otherness based on exploitation and domination. Through this view, differential colonialism merges with social self representation (antropopoiesi) inherent in the concepts of culture and education and already disclosed by the Greek paideia.

Freedom, Civility and Activeness. On the government of leisure self-formation of Finnish multicultural youth

2012

This article explores the leisure time and civic activities of ‘multicultural youth’ in Finland. The theoretic-conceptual framework is the Foucauldian governmentality approach and Foucault's four step model of the ethical self-formation of the moral subject. This toolkit exposes how the subjectivation of the multicultural youth takes place in their leisure time activities and civic action, and connects and disconnects with the desires and expectations of administration and youth workers. The leisure time subjectivation of the youth implements on the interface of their own ‘self-driven’ activities and interests and more or less programmatic governance of official youth work with its integrat…

Mechanical activity of small and large intestine in normal and mdx mice: a comparative analysis.

1999

The aim of this study was to compare the motor pattern (recorded as changes in intraluminal pressure) of isolated duodenum and proximal colon between dystrophic mdx and normal mice. When duodenal recordings from control preparations were compared with mdx mice there was no significant difference in the spontaneous motor pattern, responses to electrical nerve stimulation or sensitivity to pharmacological agents. Colonic segments from mdx mice showed a more complex motor pattern, consisting of contractions with amplitude and frequency similar to those of controls and by additional contractions with lower amplitude and higher frequency. Moreover, 70% of the colonic preparations from mdx mice d…

Spinal anaesthesia in a patient with post-spine surgery dural ectasia.

2013

Dural sac ectasia is a very infrequent anatomical abnormality, usually caused by connective tissue diseases, as Marfan syndrome. Very few cases have been described being a consequence of a previous spine surgical procedure. We describe the case of an elderly patient who should be operated on twice due to sub-occlusive colon disease. Surgery was performed under spinal anaesthesia. A dural sac ectasia was suspected after the first procedure and the abdominal X-ray was reviewed. The characteristics of the anatomical alteration and the course of both anaesthetic procedures were described. X-ray and CT images were provided.

Anti-TNF-Antikörper zur Therapie von entzündlichen Darmstenosen bei Morbus Crohn

2003

Stenoses are a frequent complication in patients with Crohn's disease and represent a major diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. The proper assessment of the nature of a stenosis as inflammatory or fibrotic is critical for appropriate treatment, since symptomatic fibrotic stenoses require surgical resection. Standard diagnostic procedures to assess the nature of a stenosis include endoscopy, conventional contrast radiography and magnetic resonance tomography. Recent data suggest, that the positron-emission-tomography possesses a high sensitivity and specificity to confirm inflammatory activity in the bowel. The recombinant monoclonal anti-TNF-antibody Infliximab (Remicade) has been approve…

"I'm Not Like Indian Women": Reflections of Young European Women in Varanasi, India

2006

The aim of this article is to look at the ways in which young European women staying in the city of Varanasi for long periods of time talk about India and how they negotiate their place and role as women there. There is a common travellers’ discourse that sees India as a difficult and dangerous place to a vulnerable traveler, and the encounters of colonial women with “otherness” have been widely analysed. This article brings this discussion to the post colonial era and endeavors to initiate a discussion about how to understand the encounters between visiting Western women and the locals in India today. The article is based on nine interviews which Korpela conducted in Varanasi, and on her p…

Oltre la nazione. Conflitti postcoloniali e pratiche interculturali. Il caso della diaspora tamil

2014

New species of Deinogalerix (Mammalia, Eulipotyphla) from the late Miocene of Scontrone (Abruzzo, central Italy)

2017

Deinogalerix is a typical component of the late Miocene insular fauna of Gargano (south-eastern Italy). Remains of this taxon had also been found over the last 20 years at the early Tortonian site of Scontrone (Abruzzo, central Italy), but they had never been described in detail. Two new species are introduced. One of them, D. samniticus sp. nov., is larger sized and better documented, and received a formal description. The other entity is clearly distinct from D. samniticus sp. nov., but it is merely represented by a single mandible. It is therefore presented here as a different, but undetermined species, Deinogalerix sp. Comparative analyses show that the new species have exclusive dental…

Antitumor Cell-Complex Vaccines Employing Genetically Modified Tumor Cells and Fibroblasts

2014

The present study evaluates the immune response mediated by vaccination with cell complexes composed of irradiated B16 tumor cells and mouse fibroblasts genetically modified to produce GM-CSF. The animals were vaccinated with free B16 cells or cell complexes. We employed two gene plasmid constructions: one high producer (pMok) and a low producer (p2F). Tumor transplant was performed by injection of B16 tumor cells. Plasma levels of total IgG and its subtypes were measured by ELISA. Tumor volumes were measured and survival curves were obtained. The study resulted in a cell complex vaccine able to stimulate the immune system to produce specific anti-tumor membrane proteins (TMP) IgG. In the g…
