La letteratura nigeriana in lingua inglese
2020
2015
Ali Mustafa al-Misrati is one of the most eclectic and well-known contemporary Libyan writers. His wide and rich literary activity includes historical, political and social novels, essays and short stories, most of which reveals his civil commitment against colonialism in the Arab world and his support for Arab nationalism and unity of Libya. The short story that we have translated and presented here takes place in Libya under the Italian colonization. The plot arises from the Duce‟s visit to Tripoli in 1937 and tells the story of Far'as, an artisan who was asked to make an elegant Arabic horse-saddle to be given to the Duce as a special gift for his visit. But Far'as was a mujahid. His fat…
La conquista è un sostantivo femminile. Donne e avventura coloniale dell'Italia liberale del Corno d'Africa
2016
2012
Italian scholars and Arabists have only recently started to pay attention towards Libya and this country's rich and fascinating literary production. Libyan writers are, in fact, still unknown to most people in Italy, where merely a few Italian translations of Libyan works and critical essays on Libyan literature have been published until now. Yet, Libya's contemporary literary scene features outstanding figures, such as the eclectic writer 'Ali Mustafà al-Misrati, whose novels, short stories and essays deal with significant historical, political and social themes. Starting from the analysis of one of author's tales focused on the Libyan opposition against Italian colonialism, this article p…
Narrazioni dagli interstizi. Lidia Curti e le fabulazioni dei femminismi
2021
On 21 April 2021 Lidia Curti left us. One of the first to develop cultural and postcolonial studies in Italy, a central voice in feminist and gender studies, a tireless scholar, Lidia Curti was a fundamental figure for all of us. In this article, through three of her key texts, I retrace the leitmotiv of women’s writing of living ‘between’ the interstices in the light of Donna Haraway’s FS figurations, and the postcolonial and feminist method of the listening position and of ‘speaking nearby’ against the powers of ventriloquism.
Species cohesion despite extreme inbreeding in a social spider.
2011
Colonial social spiders experience extreme inbreeding and highly restricted gene flow between colonies; processes that question the genetic cohesion of geographically separated populations and which could imply multiple origins from predecessors with limited gene flow. We analysed species cohesion and the potential for long-distance dispersal in the social spider Stegodyphus dumicola by studying colony structure in eastern South Africa and the cohesion between this population and Namibian populations previously published. Data from both areas were (re)analysed for historic demographic parameters. Eastern South African S. dumicola were closely related to an east Namibian lineage, showing coh…
Postcolonial studies and translation theory
2009
Otherness and self in latvian theatre: Changes at the turn of the nineteenth century
2015
In the article, political and historical interpretations of the first play in Latvian, an adapted translation of Ludvig Holberg’s Jeppe of the Hill (1723, Latvian version 1790) are explored. Although the play has been often interpreted as a work of anti-alcohol propaganda, the article argues that the political motives of the play are no less important. Translated into Latvian during the time of the French revolution, the play mirrors the tense atmosphere of the revolutionary years and reflects changes in Latvian peasant identity. While translating, Baltic German pastor Alexander Johann Stender changed the play’s setting to the late eighteenth century Courland and added new details, emphasiz…
“Something Hungry and Wild is Still Calling”: Post-Apartheid Gothic
2012
International audience; The postcolonial Gothic is now a mode widely covered by literary criticism, but South Africa has often been left out of investigations. This paper argues that only now that apartheid has ended can writers and critics explore how the Gothic manifests itself in South African literature. Showing possible connections between the postcolonial Gothic and recent South African fiction, it seeks to define a new category that can help define the contours of the literary field in South Africa: post-apartheid Gothic.
