Image Compression by 2D Motif Basis

2011

Approaches to image compression and indexing based on extensions to 2D of some of the Lempel-Ziv incremental parsing techniques have been proposed in the recent past. In these approaches, an image is decomposed into a number of patches, consisting each of a square or rectangular solid block. This paper proposes image compression techniques based on patches that are not necessarily solid blocks, but are affected instead by a controlled number of undetermined or don't care pixels. Such patches are chosen from a set of candidate motifs that are extracted in turn from the image 2D motif basis, the latter consisting of a compact set of patterns that result from the autocorrelation of the image w…

Smartphone determination of fat in cured meat products

2017

Abstract A method has been developed to determine the fat content in different cold meat products by image processing using the camera of a mobile phone. Salchichon , chorizo , salami and cured ham pictures were taken with a Meizu M2 Mini mobile phone camera under fixed lighting conditions of the light emitting diode flash of the mobile phone. Images were treated with Matlab to obtain the mean pixels of average red, green and blue camera values colours (RGB) of the pixels and different data pretreatments were taken into account to correlate colour parameters with fat content values determined in a series of commercially available samples by the Soxhlet method. RGB values were used as input …

Colorectal Cancer Stem Cells: From the Crypt to the Clinic

2014

Since their first discovery, investigations of colorectal cancer stem cells (CSCs) have revealed some unexpected properties, including a high degree of heterogeneity and plasticity. By exploiting a combination of genetic, epigenetic, and microenvironmental factors, colorectal CSCs metastasize, resist chemotherapy, and continually adapt to a changing microenvironment, representing a formidable challenge to cancer eradication. Here, we review the current understanding of colorectal CSCs, including their origin, relationship to stem cells of the intestine, phenotypic characterization, and underlying regulatory mechanisms. We also discuss limitations to current preclinical models of colorectal …

Color difference threshold of chromostereopsis induced by flat display emission

2015

The study of chromostereopsis has gained attention in the backdrop of the use of computer displays in daily life. In this context, we analyze the illusory depth sense using planar color images presented on a computer screen. We determine the color difference threshold required to induce an illusory sense of depth psychometrically using a constant stimuli paradigm. Isoluminant stimuli are presented on a computer screen, which stimuli are aligned along the blue–red line in the computer display CIE xyY color space. Stereo disparity is generated by increasing the color difference between the central and surrounding areas of the stimuli with both areas consisting of random dots on a black backgr…

Indirect Catalytic Spectrophotometric Determination of Metamizol Following Oxidation by Lead Dioxide Immobilized in A Polyester Resin Bed

1996

Abstract A spectrophotometric-indirect procedure for the determination of metamizol is described. The method is based on the reaction of the drug in a solid-phase (lead dioxide immobilized in a polyester resin bed) in acidic media (perchloric acid 0.01 M as carrier). The lead dioxide reactor provides simultaneously an effective oxidation of the drug and a controlled liberation of Pb(II) which acts as catalyst on the reaction pyrogallol red-potassium persulphate; the oxidation of the red pyrogallol results in a less coloured solution. The decreased red colour (negative FIA peaks) is monitored at 520 nm. The calibration graph is linear in the interval 2–16 ppm in metamizol. The relative stand…

Fluorescent Core/Shell Nanoparticles for Specific Cell‐Nucleus Staining

2008

The highly fluorescent perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxdiimide (PDI) chromophore is a popular dye and pigment because of its excellent chemical, thermal, and photochemical stability. Due to these outstanding properties, there have been several successful applications of PDI chromophores in various fields. Water-soluble and fluorescent PDI dyes have been used in biological applications such as the in vitro staining of cells and proteins. The combination of water solubility and high fluorescence quantum yield still represents a challenging goal since PDI dyes have a strong tendency to form aggregates in aqueous solution even at very low concentrations. Water solubility and high fluorescence quan…

Machine Learning Regression Approaches for Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) Retrieval with S2-MSI and S3-OLCI Simulated Data

2018

The colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) variable is the standard measure of humic substance in waters optics. CDOM is optically characterized by its spectral absorption coefficient, a C D O M at at reference wavelength (e.g., ≈ 440 nm). Retrieval of CDOM is traditionally done using bio-optical models. As an alternative, this paper presents a comparison of five machine learning methods applied to Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 simulated reflectance ( R r s ) data for the retrieval of CDOM: regularized linear regression (RLR), random forest regression (RFR), kernel ridge regression (KRR), Gaussian process regression (GPR) and support vector machines (SVR). Two different datasets of radiative t…

What is the best surgical option for the resection of transverse colon cancer?

2019

Transverse colon is an infrequent localization of colon cancer and it is burdened by a poor prognosis. The principle of oncological radicality includes primary tumor resection with adequate lymphadenectomy. To date, there is still no consensus on which type of surgical resection perform in case of transverse colon cancer (TCC). Lymphatic drainage and vascularization of this section of the colon is highly variable presenting with different anatomical variants. Moreover, mobilization of the transverse colon can be particularly challenging in comparison to other colon tracts. Despite a lack of standardized definitions, three main surgical options are proposed: segmental colectomy of the transv…

Nonmonotonic Pattern Formation in Three Species Lotka-Volterra System with Colored Noise

2005

A coupled map lattice of generalized Lotka-Volterra equations in the presence of colored multiplicative noise is used to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution of three interacting species: one predator and two preys symmetrically competing each other. The correlation of the species concentration over the grid as a function of time and of the noise intensity is investigated. The presence of noise induces pattern formation, whose dimensions show a nonmonotonic behavior as a function of the noise intensity. The colored noise induces a greater dimension of the patterns with respect to the white noise case and a shift of the maximum of its area towards higher values of the noise intensity.
